Do you think that Kubiak is a better coach than any of these teams' coaches? For arguments' sake, let's asume that you think he is a better coach than Shurmur of the Browns. That being the case, if the Texans lose to the Browns, whose fault is it? Regardless of whether or not Kubiak is a good coach, upsets occur and every week a lesser team wins and it may very well be due to a faction of a team that is not as good on paper as the other team.
Here is a question to ponder. http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth Who is the best coach in the AFC south? Would you guys rather we had Caldwell or Del Rio instead of the Kubes?
kubes/smith were smart in bringing in a legit d-coordinator. now it took them too long but at least it finally happened. that said, what is the deal with coaches challenge? seriously losing those timeouts could really hurt in a playoff game. we need to fix that ASAP!!!
Nope. Sometimes good teams have bad days. See the Saints vs. the Rams yesterday. Or would you take the Rams coaching staff over the Saints?
You are starting to take on a DD-like obsession with Kubiak. "Weak schedule"....LOL. Last time I checked, the Texans still played in the NFL. If you were Bob McNair, you would be the first owner in the history of the NFL to fire a coach for going 12-4 because of a weak schedule.
Schaub throws an INT, it's Kubiak's fault. Tate fumbles, it's Kubiak's fault. Replay guy says to throw the challenge flag, it's Kubiak's fault. Fans order a heineken but get a budweiser, it's Kub...
Other than Andre Johnson, name an NFL starter on that 2005 roster. Dunta Robinson maybe. Chester Pitts. Uhm.... That was a 2-14 team that lacked not only quality but quantity - they barely had a respectable 2nd unit. Years of out-and-out horrorific drafting and poor personnel moves had caught up to them. They were terrible. Note - there's exactly one player still on the roster and that was just five years ago. Maybe not as a head coach - but as a coordinator, Capers certainly does. As for Kubiak - come on, man... He has crafted a top-flight offense out of a back-up QB, an undrafted RB, a 4th round TE... IIRC, they have two first rounders starting on offense - and you don't think Kubiak optimizes talent? It's actually by a lot. It's not a paticularly hard schedule - but of their first 8, 5 have been against teams currently with winning records. And they have 4 games reamining against teams currently with winning records. Granted, they'll get three games against teams that are currently 0-7 and three against 2-win teams - but, again, I'm not arguing it's difficult so much as dismissing any notion that it's "one of the weakest schedules in the history of the league."
that's just stupid. of course it's his fault, it's his staff. he put the replay guy in charge. they need to fix that crap, you can't be giving away timeouts.
Both of those calls were close enough (and important enough) to challenge. Of course, had he not challenged either of them, there would be 12 threads here saying he doesn't care about winning.
Rams Coach . . ON THAT DAY . . out coached the Saints coach. Same in the Ravens and You act like Pittsburg is chopped liver The Pitt game maybe the 1 game Kubes OUTCOACHED the other guy [or Wade did . . must be consistant in my KUBES BASHING] "HE'S NOT *THE GUY*!!" - Rocket River
He is one of the few owners that gave a coach a 6th season after no playoffs. . . . so . . . Rocket River
I recall alot of folx did not think that was THEIR CALL that it was a McNair Call so now we wanna give them credit for that too? Rocket River
"I think I can Make David Carr in to a legit QB" - paraphrased How much STEVE SLAYTON did he have go through before Arian even got a SNIFF? Maybe they just slow to recognize talent The WEAKEST schedule line was a bit of a joke referencing last years recurring excuses of the HARDEST SCHEDULE in football Rocket River
My point wasn't that Pittsburgh was chopped liver, but that they are a pretty good team (evidenced by win over NE) that the Texans beat. I find it odd that the Texans offense is very much a system offense, but the coach gets no credit for that system. AJ would be great any where. Foster would be very good any where, but I don't think there is a better system as he thrives on Kubiak's cutback lanes. Schaub is best out of play action. The interior linemen are recycled for the most part to make one of the best lines in football and turn Foster from very good to great most of the time. The Texans have not had average talent (evidenced by the very few ex-Texans on other teams) through Kubiak's coaching career and yet here he is with a chance to break even this season as the Texans have become a contender. One season, he played without a secondary. Kubiak hasn't proved he can win in playoffs. He is at least a slightly better than average coach that deserves a chance to battlefight with his guys now that it seems that the team actually has the depth and skills to fit his and Wade's system.
Why is this on Gary Kubiak? It's been whispered about enough that it seems highly likely him saying that was a condition for hire - what would you say? And to Kubiak's credit: 1) at that point, having not had access to Carr except through film, he had no reason to believe he couldn't salvage his career - and would you have preferred he answer, "I'm not that good..."' 2) he cut bait after a year. At that point and time, he was worth the year and he should be commended for getting McNair to eat that money and move on. And, oh yeah - he immediately traded for a back-up QB who's been among the league-leaders, statistically, the past 3 years. Talk about optimizing talent - do you not remember the 1,200 yard season he coaxed out of STEVE SLAYTON? Did people make this excuse? I think more fell into the "Holy CRAP! That defense is terrible!!!" camp - a defense, btw, you continue to sort of, kind of excuse in your prolonged Kubiak witch hunt.
not that i want to jump in here, but to clarify, is your position that if you take the talent on paper and team A is on paper more talented than team B, yet team B beats team A, then team A had to have been outcoached? You see no way that on paper more talented players on team A could have been outplayed by the seemingly less talented players on team B. perhaps you've never heard of the phrase "any given sunday". sometimes good teams, properly coached, lose to bad teams, poorly coached. the coach can't make is QB make the best throw, his receivers catch the ball, his defense make the tackle. Even if all of those players typically do it a lot better than those they're going against, if they all have a bad day on the same day, there's nothing coaching can do. I'm no Gary Kubiak fan, but your point seems to completely ignore the obvious, which is it is on the players to ultimately perform, and just because they should perform a certain way, doesn't mean they always do.
