McCourty was put in a position to succeed. Look at all the other thriving rookie CBs and you'll see a vet (good or bad) on the other side, or a DL that can supply good pressure: McCourty, Grimes, Verner, Patterson, Haden. Not that I'm defending KJ, it takes a significant black hole of ability to be the worst starter on a defense that was on pace to be the worst in history. And good for Lewis. I imagine the Jaguars fanbase must have made a similar campaign for him like Leach did.
