Solid effort from OKC's pitchers as they defeated Iowa 3-2. Andy Van Hekken scattered 6 hits in 6 innings, walking 3 and fanning 5. J.B. Shuck had an RBI triple in the 3rd, then came home when Collin DeLome singled one batter later. Koby Clemens had an RBI double in the 8th, but Casey Fien made it interesting as he allowed the Cubs to get within 1 when Bryan LaHair smacked his 24th homer, a 2-run homer with 2 outs. However, Fien got Lou Montanez to whiff for the win.

Corpus was off tonight.... they're heading home to welcome Tulsa to Whataburger Field, and Kody Hinze into the fold.

I will recap Lancaster's game in the morning. Probably might do this from now on.

Epic fail for the Lexington bullpen.... they blew a 5-3 lead to WV on their way to losing 7-5 in 10. Ben Heath went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Ben Orloff and Enrique Hernandez drove in a run each. Alex Sogard threw the bare minimum quality start, allowing 7 hits (2 homers), walking 3, and fanning 4. Jorge De Leon blew the save, and David Martinez ultimately got the loss, allowing 2 unearned runs in the 10th.

Tri-City was on the road tonight for their series opener against the Hudson Valley Renegades. Entering the 9th, they trailed 3-2, and turned that into a 7-3 victory. The VCs allowed the Renegades to score 3 in the bottom of the 1st, and shut them out the rest of the way. Zach Johnson led the way, going 2-5 with 3 RBI. 4 others (Justin Gominsky, Miles Hamblin, Matt Duffy, and Neiko Johnson) drove in 1. Kyle Hallock allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits in 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 5. Mitchell Lambson, the 19th-rounder from Arizona State, got his first pro win, relieving Hallock for 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2.

We had a doubleheader at Pioneer Park today, as Greeneville took on Danville. It was a split, as the G-Stros took game 1 by a score of 5-4. Ernesto Genoves went 3-3 with 2 RBI. Jose Vargas and Darwin Rivera drove in 1 each. Tyson Perez went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits (1 homer), striking out 4. Matison Smith allowed the Braves to score the tying run, but Genoves bailed him out with a walk-off single.

Game 2, was a different story, as Danville took that one 6-1. Josh Magee had the only RBI. Jose Perdomo's ERA is still unsightly, but is improving, as he went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits (1 homer), walking 2 and fanning 5. Ariel Ovando served as the DH for both games, going 2-7 with a double and 2 strikeouts. Both of his hits (and K's) came in game 1, where he was 2-4.

The Gulf Coasters let a 5-3 lead slip away and snowball into a 10-6 loss to the Cardinals. Jean Carlos Batista hit a 3-run homer in the 6th, which was the last time the Astros scored. I believe he hit the squad's first homer this season. They've played 15 games. Chris Epps and Jacob Meskin drove in 1 apiece. Enderson Franco went 3 1/3, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, walking 3 and fanning 1. The loser was Pedro Gomez, who allowed 4 runs on 1 hit (not a grand slam), walking 4.

The Academy won 11-9 in 10 over the Yankees' 2nd squad. They scored 2 in the 9th and 10th. Michael Medina had a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning. Teoscar Hernandez drove in 2. Juan Solano, Mesac Laguna, and Mario Gonzalez drove in a run apiece. Luis Abad got 1 out, allowing 4 runs and 4 walks without allowing a hit. Manuel Sanchez got the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief, walking 1.

I'm heading to a Hooks game next week -- anyone particular I should keep my eye on? I scan this thread from time-to-time but I don't really know whose where.

I thought we all agreed that "G-Stros" should not be used. It's just wrong.

Basically the whole infield, JD Martinez and Jacob Geobbert in the outfield and Wallace behind the plate. Depending on the game Dallas Kuechel or Xavier Cedeno on the mound.

lets say the stros deal for like 9 minor league players this deadline (hypothetical)...is there a limit on how many players a team can have in the farm system? Would they have to let some go?

or can they cram all of them into the farm?

Austin Wates is gunning for a promotion.... his performance as of late should be what spurs him on to Corpus. The Jethawks wrapped up their series with Bakersfield, triumphing 7-6 by scoring 3 in the bottom of the 8th, breaking a 4-4 tie. Wates went 3-3 with his 5th blast of the season, a solo job in the 5th. He added a sac fly that scored Jay Austin for Lancaster's first run, and a double that drove in Jio Mier for the final run. Austin and Mier both went 2-5 with an RBI and scored twice. David Flores added a 2-run double in the 3rd. Robby Donovan went 3 1/3, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, walking 3 and fanning 1. Mike Ness played damage control, holding the Blaze scoreless in his 3 2/3, allowing 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1. Kirk Clark got the win, although things got a little interesting in the 9th, as Bakersfield drew within 1. However, he got Chris Richburg to line out to end the game, stranding men at 1st and 2nd.

Once Austin Wates goes to Corpus, I'd like to see Adam Bailey on the way up. Bailey had a pretty rough June, but he looks like he's getting back on track a bit. He's 23 and doesn't seem to have much left to prove in Lexington.

Only knock on Bailey is his OBP is a tad low, but that was probably brought down with a .253 number in June. He was at .360 in April and .366 in May. And, he's at .346 in the early going this month, so June looks to be the extreme outlier. He's got pop, and he'd definitely flourish in Lancaster. Before anything about the Lancaster effect emerges, Bailey already has 16 homers in a dramatically less extreme hitter's environment in Lexington, Kentucky.

You only have a limited number of spots available, but there are no shortages of players that the team can afford to let go.

Edit: Don't forget that some of those players will get promoted to fill the holes on the active roster.

Look at the roster at OKC. There's plenty of filler there that can easily be replaced with actual prospects.

I'll assume that whoever we acquire at the deadline will be young, cheap and close to MLB ready. Some might go to OKC while most right here along with the Corpus gang.

not sure that's a good assumption. lower prospects are traded all the time, are they not?

Of course they are...but the Astros are (hopefully) more likely to require upper level, closer to ML ready (like Wallace was) prospects if they're going to be moving Wandy and Pence.

Yes. Villar, Paredes & Gose were all in A/A+ ball when we traded for them. At the same time we got an MLB player in Happ, one that was ready in Melancon, and immediately flipped Gose for another ML ready player in Wallace.

It is a safe bet to expect we would receive both.

that was more my point. I don't for one minute think *every* asset the Astros will get back will be near-ML ready.

The reason I mentioned upper level guys was because yesterday during his weekly radio interview Wade made a point of saying that is what he was looking for in trading at the deadline. I would imagine that if they offered a stud lower level guy like Cosart, then he'd go for it but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw most of the guys acquired close to or MLB ready.

I would say it is rare. Our trade for Randy Johnson was a rare example. We had plenty of talent at AAA, and a great MLB club, so we made the move, and gave up 3 ML ready players.

Looking back, I wonder why the Hell wasn't Carlos Guillen our starting SS that year? Ricky Gutierrez was a horrible player for us, and Tim Bogar wasn't anything to ride home about either.

Just looked at that 1998 New Orleans roster on baseball-reference.
Man we had a lot of young talent back then. Meluskey, Berkman, Guillen, Ward, Garcia, Elarton, Halama, Carlos Hernandez....
Those would be our 8 best players at Triple A at the moment.

Just noticed Hidalgo, Russ Johnson and Chris Truby were in there as well.
