So far this year I've read: Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follet I'm reading: Snowcrash by Neal Stephenson I've recently read (end of last year): Bicycle Diaries - David Byrne Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson Waiting in the Queue: World Without End - Ken Follet So far I've enjoyed all of them.
Finished Citizens - holy lord what a history. I was blown away. Great book. Finished Lost City of Z - very interesting, and well written Finished Bones of the Magi by James Rollins - Fun, but reads like a movie. Working on Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything and almost done with Chuck P's Survivor. Bryson's book is interesting and fun, but others I have read like it have been far more detailed and thourough. Chuck's book is, as usual, awesome but odd.
ordered 3 books on amazon a couple weeks ago currently reading - american lion - andrew jackson bio that came out last year. toughest dude to ever serve as president! also got a book about edgar cayce's visions of atlantis and another one about the mexican-american war called 'so far from god'.
The Road. Wanted to see the movie but never got around to it so i picked it up on my last trip. Different writing style, but very good.
I finished Middlesex a couple of weeks ago. Seriously one of my favorite reads. Highly recommended reading. I finished The Road a few days ago. It was ok, but not great. I expected a lot better. Heading to the book store today so looking for some recommendations. I'll read through this thread again and see if anything catches my eye.
I'm a geek and looking for a new book....so I think this is right up my alley. Gonna go pick it up today, thanks!
A few months ago I got inspired by a friend, who was inspired by Stephen King, who said that, on average, he tries to read a book a week. In 2008, my friend read 50+ books. In 2009, my friend read 50+ books. That sounded cool. (Yeah I'm a dork.) So in October of last year, I started the "Book a Week" plan. At first it was impossible. I tried to read at night, but often I'd be out with my friends or on a date or whatever--have a beer or two--and then my reading time was shot. Weekends were erratic. Also, I'm a slow reader (which sucks because I like reading). So I did something fairly radical: I started waking up earlier, and every morning, before work, I read for an hour. No exceptions. Ever. This plan is awesome. Yeah, it takes a little toll from the sleep schedule, but I think the upside is well worth it. Every week I have a guaranteed 7-hours of reading time. Between that and other occasional pockets of reading (subway, chilling on couch, whatever), I can get through a book a week. Also, to mix it up, I force myself to do Fiction one week, Non-Fiction the next. Here's what I've read since I started this plan in October: 1. Renegade: The Making of a President - Richard Wolffe 2. A Wild Sheep Chase - Haruki Murakami 3. The Audacity of Hope -Barack Obama 4. The Road - Cormac McCarthy 5. The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell 6. Blindness - Jose Saramago 7. Founding Brothers - Joseph J. Ellis 8. The Ginger Man - J.P. Donleavy 9. Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt 10. Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri 11. His Excellency: George Washington - Joseph J. Ellis 12. War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy (took 3+ weeks - worth it.) 13. A Short History of World War II - James Stokesbury 14. The Emperor - Ryszard Kapuscinski 15. Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantel 16. And Here's the Kicker: Interviews with Humor Writers 17. Success - Martin Amis 18. Churchill - Paul Johnson 19. The Great and Secret Show - Clive Barker currently reading: Game Change (2008 election-p*rn) But I can't endorse the Reading-in-the-Morning plan enough. It makes getting out of bed more bearable.
Not reading at the moment but for those who's interested in Fantasy should look into George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series(A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows). You will not regret it. Still waiting for his A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and hopefully it will be coming out this year. But he's pretty busy working on an HBO pilot for A Game of Thrones at the moment. Can't wait! Also Try looking into Guy Gavriel Kay novels also: Tigana The Fionavar Tapestry The Lions of Al-Rassan A Song for Arbonne I'm excitedly waiting for his Under Heaven that's coming out this April.
Yeah, Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara series are pretty good also. I was reading his first book about 15yrs ago but never finish it when something else got in the way.
About to start reading this one for a book club, and am also currently reading Shadow of the Wind (though currently finding it hard to get through the first few chapters)...
Just finished it, got it for Christmas, I have a new found respect for Magic and Bird. Now reading this:
past few months: Bicycle Diaries - David Byrne This is Your Brain on Music - Daniel J. Levitin Shoplifting from American Apparel - Tao Lin
