Although he does not have Vick at the top of MVP discussions, Mike Sando makes some good points about the amount of time Vick has played: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/27734/mike-sandos-mvp-watch-27 The strongest argument against Michael Vick as a legitimate MVP candidate -- that he hasn't played enough this season -- should start working in his favor. The man has more rushing touchdowns, four, than workhorse backs Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, Maurice Jones-Drew, Thomas Jones or Matt Forte. Every other player in the league with more than two TD passes has also thrown an interception. Every other player with more than six TD passes has at least three picks. Vick has 11 TD passes, no interceptions and the highest passer rating in the league. Have you seen Vick throw the football? I'm not sure NASA could engineer a device capable of producing tighter spirals on intermediate and deep passes. Have you seen Vick run the football? Vick has 40 fewer rushing yards than Marshawn Lynch. He has run for more first downs than Ricky Williams, Shonn Greene or LeGarrette Blount. He has five runs of at least 20 yards, same as Adrian Peterson and more than Jackson, Jones-Drew or Peyton Hillis. Vick was third on my MVP Watch list in late September before an injury sidelined him. He's back on the list at No. 3 after accounting for six TDs during his historic performance against the Washington Redskins on Monday night. Quibbling over playing time becomes increasingly futile as Vick keeps producing. Vick belongs on the list because the production is there, the winning record is there, the value is there and the evidence suggests he'll continue on a similar trajectory. Tom Brady, Philip Rivers and Vick surged past a curiously slumping Peyton Manning into the top three spots. Brady's fiery performance in victory at Pittsburgh set him apart this week. His New England Patriots are tied for the NFL's best record. They've also scored more points than any team in the league. Rivers has the stats, obviously, and he'll remain in the conversation as long as the Chargers continue their recent improvement in the standings. Manning will presumably bounce back after posting passer ratings below 70 in back-to-back regular-season games for only the third time in his career.
funny, I was just wondering who that deep ball reminds me of. even qbs with strong arms, like steve mcnair for instance or bret farve, their deep balls kind of fall out the sky. vick's gets their with the velocity of a 20 yard pass. the only player i truly remember throwing a deep ball like that is warren moon
What about a defensive guy? I know I've seen from some Peter King weekly stuff he's had Matthews (GB), Wake (MIA), and Ngata (BAL) listed on his mvp watch.
I don't care if Manning comes back and wins this game, his play has been atrocious over the past few weeks and Rivers is in position to fall to the Raiders again. Does this put Brady in the race alone or with others? Are there still those of you so attached to Manning's jock you would still give it to him?
he was my favorite player as a kid. I'm referring to specifically deep balls, Moon threw the best deep ball I saw pre vick
Elway? Pffft. Jeff George had the strongest arm of all time. Accuracy, poise, decision-making, leadership, personality, etc weren't always there, but he had a damn cannon unlike anyone else. I wonder what his career would have been like if he had Randy Moss in his prime for 6 years.
If Peyton Manning is in the MVP discussion at this point, you have to include Foster, in my opinion. Point is, there's so much parity in the NFL this season, it's hard to throw find just one name that leaps out there ahead of others. Peyton shouldn't be in the discussion, as bad as his play has been lately. When you play a position like quarterback, when you have a few bad games, your team starts to lose. Your team starts to lose, you don't get MVP. But for the same exact reason, that's why a lot of quarterbacks do win MVP. That is also why not as many running backs win MVP. Foster is clearly the best of that group this year. He's not really had a game where he hasn't helped his offense immensely. But, because of his team's shoddy defense, he won't get considered. Stupid, but it's the way things work. In my opinion, Brady and Vick should be at the top. I would say Vick should probably win it at this point.
Maybe it's a dumb question, because I've only seen him play twice, but why isn't Matt Ryan in the MVP talks? His team has the best record in the NFL, looking at the remaining games, they should be odds-on favorites to have the best record in the NFL, and he's been very consistent. I know that the Falcons are a run first team, but their running game has been inconsistent in comparison.
You are right, he should definitely be up there in the discussion for MVP. His numbers are pretty comparable to Brady, and he has led his team on numerous game winning drives.
My guess would be because he has not been a top 10 quarterback except for TD throws and then he is still only 8th. His TD-INT ratio is good but there are a host of starting quarterbacks who have thrown less interceptions than him. I've seen Roddy White getting most of the MVP talk from that team. Ryan was 6th on Mike Sando's MVP watchlist last week behind, Brady, Rivers, Brees, Vick and Manning in that order. White was 9th. Personally, I don't see how Manning can be on anybody's MVP list at the moment. Earlier this season people were bragging on him being able to win with the likes of White, Tamme, James, etc. but now everybody is using it as his crutch saying it is hurting him. You can't have it both ways.
It was Manning by a landslide, winning with anybody in a jockstrap playing wide receiver and RB. But... the last three weeks killed that. It will be Brady because he is handsome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBVuAGFcGKY
I never thought my fantasy team would win in spite of Peyton Manning. This is an all-time bad streak.
