It is because Mccoy was much more consistent. Suh's big games were huge, but he also disappeared for many others. You take out the UT game where the line didn't block well and Colt held on to the ball way too long resulting in many sacks and Mccoy is probably the no brainer #1 choice. You can't go wrong with either one, but I probably take McCoy myself if I had the first pick unless I ran a 3-4 defense, then Suh has to be the pick. Suh would be a great end in the 3-4. Mccoy will be a better tackle, imo.
If that's your definition, then Lamar Houston was better than both of them. Sorry but Suh was otherworldly for a few games, the consistency argument for McCoy might hold more weight if his numbers were impressive but they really weren't. I know sacks aren't everything, but the guy had exactly ONE sack after the Texas game this year and then one in the bowl game. In a pass happy league like the Big 12 that's pretty poor and just doesn't compare to Suh. Hell it doesn't compare to Lamar Houston.
I don't buy this argument. Suh was the consensus #1 DL prospect going into last season and he played like an absolute mad man all season long while anchoring one of the best defenses in the nation. Suh: 82 Tkls 12 Sacks McCoy: 32 Tkls 6 Sacks If you're talking about consistency, Suh had at least 5 Tkls in 9 games with his worst game being a 3 Tkl game vs. KU. Meanwhile, McCoy only had 1 game with at least 5 Tkls and had 2 games where he only got 1 Tkl. I know stats don't tell the whole story but Suh was the most dominant defensive player in the nation last season. I'm not saying McCoy is a dud, I think he's going to have a very good NFL career, but Suh was/is a ridiculous prospect. http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=175300
Suh is the best prospect in the pool, you can't really argue with that. but not everyone is looking for a DT, nor need one. we do, but not everybody. having Berry would be a dream come true, he would be the perfect fit here. then draft a corner in the second round. i imagine we'll probably draft thomas if he's on board, if not we'll get the best player still on board.
With Dunta gone, getting a guy like Thomas would a HUGE asset to this team as he's capable of playing CB and FS. I'm actually hoping he doesn't perform that well at the combine so he'll slip to us at #20. If he performs like he can/should, he'll likely be gone by the time we pick.
If Thomas can play CB at the level of a 1st rounder, it's a no brainer... sign him up. Having him be able to slide back to FS later in his career once we get some DB help would be great.
Impressive. Al Davis has made his pick... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/V4-1e6Faglw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/V4-1e6Faglw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
What do you guys know about Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers? Should the Texans grab him if he's available in the second round when they make their pick? If the Texans go with Earl Thomas in the first, McCourty might be a good pick for the second round. All of a sudden the Texans are set in the secondary for the next half dozen years with Quin and Pollard in the other CB and S positions.
It doesn't look like Thomas will drop to 20. I'm curous to know what we'll do bc supposedly there aren't any other secondary players worth drafting at our spot. So either we draft another position or move down.
We could go running back. Personally, I'd rather see us go after Thomas Jones, and draft secondary (Earl Thomas or Kyle Wilson are the two I would pick in our range...unless someone falls), or if there is no secondary help, go after best player available. Take someone that might drop.
I think Suh already is the clearcut #1, Mayock is just trying to mix things up IMO. I'm a Longhorn so I might be biased but I think Lamarr Houston has a chance of being a pretty good NFL pro, he was very productive at UT and is measuring out quite nicely. Wouldn't mind picking him up in the 2nd if we don't take a DT in the 1st, he's a high motor guy and gets in the backfield quite a bit. Houston: 6'2 3/4 305 lbs. 4.85 Forty 30 Bench Press Reps 33.5 Vertical 9'6" Broad Jump 68 Tkls 22 TFL 8 Sacks
he's only not the clear cut #1 DT in the minds of wannabe draft gurus who want clicks on their website. Edit: I just read that he had a 35.5 inch vertical, nearly breaking the record for a DT (36). So he's better or same than McCoy in every single tangible underwear number(slightly bigger, same speed, way stronger/bench presser, way better jumper) and was far far superior on the field. I don't know how anybody can seriously argue that McCoy is a better prospect without being laughed at at this point.
FA: Thomas Jones (RB) and Antrel Rolle (FS) Draft: BPA - (especially if he's a DT or CB). This is what the good teams do, assess their needs, use free agency to fill some - especially the ones that are quick fixes - and then set yourself up to where you're not reaching for need with your early draft picks. Texans have a chance to really take a step up this year if they play it right this off-season. I can even see them moving down from number 20 and picking up maybe an early second and third to do so.
We won't do that though, and it's a little disappointing. If there's no Earl Thomas, we'll trade down and get a Kyle Wilson or one of the lineman, like Mike Iupati, or Maurkic Pouncey. I'd be fine with any of those to be honest...
