The only RB I see with first round value is C.J.. Spiller and though he probably will be a better NFL back than Slaton. I just can't see using your first round pick for a small upgrade, especially since he is not the the bigger, one cut and push the pile type of runner that would give us a change of pace and a short yardage option. Toby Gerhart could still be on the board at the #81 pick to fill that role. Here's walterfootball.coms updated pick as of today: #20Houston Texans: Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee If Donovan Warren and Earl Thomas are both off the board, the Texans will be in a really tough spot. They'll either have to trade up for one of those two guys, or move down about 10 spots. As it stands now, the only players who remotely make any sort of sense here are: Damian Williams, Dan Williams, Sean Weatherspoon, Brandon Ghee and Taylor Mays. Of those options, Dan Williams was the only non-reach who satisfied a dire need. The Texans could really use a solid nose tackle to bolster their defensive interior, and Williams is coming off a great year in Monte Kiffin's defense. #51 Houston Texans: Perrish Cox, CB/KR, Oklahoma State If the Texans finally want to beat Peyton Manning, they'll need to continue to improve their secondary. Perrish Cox, who can help in the return game, is a solid bargain down here. Free safety (Nate Allen, Chad Jones) is also an option. #81 Houston Texans: Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford The Texans could have finished 13-3 if they had a clutch kicker and a running back who could plunge into the end zone from the 1-yard line. Steve Slaton was placed on IR, so the running back situation in Houston is murkier than ever. Arian Foster's fumbling problems only reinforces the Texans' need at this position. (they have Cody going to Dallas at #28)
I wouldn't be too upset with this if it happened. From what I've read about Williams, he has good size/strength but has an inconsistent motor. That's a big red flag IMO in that its the last thing I want to add to the D-Line. Jared Odrick is the DT I would be looking at should Earl Thomas be off the board. As far as CB, it's all going to depend on whether Dunta is re-signed. I'm perfectly fine with Dunta and McCain starting with Reeves/Quin backing them up. But if not, CB instantly becomes the #1 priority. Gerhart would be an interesting pick. He would almost be a James Casey-type pick. If we do get a RB, I would love to pick up a home run type of kid because I think Slaton/Foster can be a nice duo if healthy.
That's the type of draft I would love. Although I don't really know how these players rate out as far as pro prospects, I like the idea of a NT in the 1st with secondary in the 2nd and I would love Toby in the 3rd.
My dream, yet realistic, draft 1. Earl Thomas S Texas (Gives us a ballhawking Safety) 2. Mike Johnson OG Alabama (With Chester Pitts likely gone, Mike Brisel being out indefinitely plus not being very good, and Antione Caldwell likely taking Chris Meyers spot at center, OG is a big need) 3. Trevard Lindley CB Kentucky (Once considered a definite 1st round pick, Lindleys stock has dropped a ton due to injuries. Don't be surprised if this time next year, he is being considered the steal of the draft) 4. Toby Gerhart RB Stanford (As impressed as I was with Arian Foster at the end of the season, the RB position is still one of our weakest positions. Gerhart could be our power back that Chris Brown was suppose to be) 5. Jay Ross DT East Carolina (The Texans best DT this season was Jeff Zgonina and he is likely retiring so the Texans will need somebody to rotate with Amobi and Shaun Cody at DT. Jay Ross is a big boy who can put pressure on the QB) 6. Adam Ulatoski OT Texas (Winston and Brown have done a fine job at OT but a little OLINE depth wouldn't hurt) 6 (From SD). Brett Swenson K Michigan State (Kris Brown was just awful this season. Time for the Texans to bring in some competition. Swensons leg is really powerful but he is dead accurate) 7. Armanti Edwards QB/WR Appalachain State (With Rex Grossman likely gone and the possibility of Kevin Walter leaving, it wouldn't hurt to pick someone up who could play either. Armanti has a solid arm and is very quick. He'd be perfect if the Texans decide to try some wildcat)
I have a feeling that Tony Pike could be one of the best value picks in this draft... I'd say there is a (small) chance that he goes on to become the best qb in the class.
Sounds like arm strength is a huge problem for Pike. He has good size (6-6 225) and is pretty accurate, but there is concern that he cannot make NFL throws and has very limited mobility. He kinda reminds me of Orvlosky in a number of ways.
LMAO, I somehow expected that response from you. I have no idea how, but I knew it would be the first post in response.
Earl Thomas moved way up on Kiper's big board this week, went from unranked to the #11 prospect in the draft. Unfortunately, I don't think Earl is going to be around when we pick. Also, here's a list of Big 12 players invited to the combine (this is only the first round of invites and does not include underclassmen).
John McClain seems to have backed off on saying the Texans will draft a RB with their first pick, but he still believes they'll use one on either their 1st or 2nd. I've seen on a couple of sites that have Jonathan Dwyer being selected by the Texans and he does fit the size requirement they'll likely be looking for at 6'0 228 lbs. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bq9Yme2gczU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bq9Yme2gczU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
A good video on what this guy was talking about. He's a big hitter, but he has terrible instincts. Don't see the Texans getting him if we keep Pollard. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vFa4aEsZzzw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vFa4aEsZzzw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
if the texan's schedule is what everyone is predicting, they need to go out and upgrade the CB position as well as the safety. going against the nfc east is no joke considering our secondary has been burned game after game.
It seems like this draft has great value at the DB position through to the late rounds. I'd be happy with those picks.
I think the Texans will unfortuneately keep D Rob since he gave to charity. Since they hired Dennison they will probably let him pick in the first round. Now before you go "huh?" remember they let Bush pick last year who he wanted in the first round and he chose Cushing. And the year before that they let Gibbs chose first round and he chose Duane Brown. So that means Denny is choosing first round most likely. Since he likes Myers (from denver) and Pitts is coming back. and they have caldwell , I expect either a running back in first round to compliment Slayton and Foster or even a reciever because I think Walters might be leaving. My hunch is walters stays and they draft a running back first round . My guess is they are scared SS injury might be career threatening (nerve injury in back and neck good lord !!!) . so i dont know the rbs all i know is gerheart and ingram. im not sold on either. i wish they would take taylor mays to make cushing happier and stay, and replace barber. but im hearing mays is horrible tackler which im not buying, i bet he is a stud anyways, whoever running back is chosing after ingram would be who the texans get...then in second round they go safety or NT then again, it could be reverese...but i think the first 3 rounds are guaranteed (rb/fs/OL) in any order
So Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram declared for the 2010 NFL draft? CF is such a great site. I learn something new here everyday.
So every player that gives to charity automatically gets a new contract? D-Rob will only be here if the price is right for the Texans. He won't be franchised again. Assistant coaches have no final say on draft picks. Everyone contributes, but Smith and the scouts do the grunt work and ultimately Kubiak makes the final call. Bush liked Cushing and Gibbs liked Brown, but it's not like they said "hey Frank, go ahead, get whoever you want." Cushing will be here for a while regardless of who we draft, and I don't think Taylor Mays is going to seal the deal for him re-signing with us in a few years. Ingram will still be at Alabama next year, and Gerhart isn't even projected to go in the first two rounds at this point.
okay so ingram isnt coming out. and i heard a interview that bush handpicked cushing and gibbs handpicked brown, of course scouts and kubiak have a say, and i was being scarcastic about drobs charity comment. drob shouldnt be here at all, no metter of price yet by donating to charity he is kissing up trying to act like hes a nice guy for the community and to the managment...trying to save his ass and with this good ol boy group it might work i say all i knew was gerhart i NEVER said gerhart will go first 2 rounds.l..nice trying to twist my words around and actaully im beginning to think that charity does in fact save a players ass, dont believe me ? ask Kris Brown why he is still here
