Rick Smith, Gary Kubiak, and Dale Strahm have a great history when it comes to picking players so whoever they decide to draft, I am going back. Glover Quin is a stud and they drafted him in the 4th round. Brice McCain was a 6th round pick and is a solid dime back. Sure the jury is still out on players like Amobi Okoye, Antwuan Molden, and Anthony Hill but I am not ready to call either of them a bust yet.
I think the Chargers would make a great trade partner so that they could move up and take Matthews. All they have at RB now is Smurf Sproles and from what I read they really like Matthews. They also have the #8 pick in the second #40 overall. So #20 pick for #28 and #40? Not sure if it works on those points charts. But this a deep draft, the Texans could fill another hole with that extra pick.
Very interesting proposal. Im thinking it would have to be their first and a high third or low second for our first though. SD would be giving up a lot in that other deal.
According to the draft value chart - http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php pick #20 - 850 points pick #28 - 660 chargers 2nd #40 - 500 3rd #91 - 136 So if we can get their 1st and 2nd it would be a no-brainer, but maybe we can get their 1st, 3rd, and a 4th next year.
Agreed, plus no one bats 1.000 throughout their career. Smith & Crew are always finding impact players EVERY draft. Even that Okoye year we picked up Schaub for a 2nd rounder. Also drafted Jacoby and Diles that year.
I'm not sure why the Chargers would trade with the Texans to get Mathews. Since we seem to be interested in him it makes more sense for them to call Atlanta or Pittsburgh and jump in front. Mathews could be gone before we pick anyway if Seattle takes a tackle at 6 ans Spiller is gone by 14.
I guess it would be a contingency plan, in case Matthews gets to us... we call them and say hey, we're taking Matthews, if you want him, now would be the time to make an offer.
I agree with all of this. I think the drop-off in corners this year is pretty large, as opposed to the fact that there really aren't or two RBs that have separated themselves from the pack. That coupled with the fact that the Texans' more pressing need is a cover corner, I would definitely take Wilson over any other prospect at 20 if he's still available. Unfortunately, I don't see Wilson sticking around that long. I'm guessing if he's still there at 18, Pittsburgh is going to jump all over him. Mathews is a great pick, but I wouldn't be opposed to the Texans trading down, and picking up Hardesty or Tate (or even Gerhart) in the third round, much like how we got Slaton a couple of years ago.
I sure hope Wilson is there, if not, i'm a little hesitant to take Matthews, just because you can find RBs in late rounds, but the guy does seem like he would fit the system.
From Lance Z's Twitter.. LanceZierlein Hearing that Ryan Mathews may not make it to Texans at 20. Also, Earl Thomas could potentially slip if he doesn't go by 12.
Okay the way I see it unfolding is Wilson goes before Haden (don't be shocked this is widely rumored now), Haden goes to SF, Earl Thomas is gone and Pouncey goes to Pittsburgh. Which leaves us Matthews and Iupati which I would prefer. So I see us taking Matthews or trading down with the Chargers. How about instead of just taking their 2nd we flip 2nds and take their 3rd? According to the chart: #20 850 points Texans #28 660 points Chargers #40 500 points Chargers #51 390 points Texans #91 136 points Chargers So Texans would be +56 points too high a premium? Their 4th is #126 and only worth 46 points....maybe a flip of seconds and next years second? Just bored today, stupid draft takes forever to get here....
PFT is talking about the Raiders targeting Iupati 8th overall, which is stunningly high for a Guard, but he's about as safe as pick as there is. If he turns into a Steve Hutchinson type that gets the run game going, you can't say it isn't a good pick.
Yeah, and we love him for making the Raiders a nationwide joke in which few journalists will even speculate on who the Raiders will draft unless that player has ran a fast 40 yard dash. Something tells me he'll be almost convinced to go with this guy, and then at the last minute take some workout warrior like Bruce Campbell or Jason Pierre-Paul.
That would be a good pick for y'all. Even though it's a high pick for a OG, he's a safe pick like you said. Also, it's starting to sound like Kyle Wilson will be gone by #20. It's hard to believe anything you hear so close to the draft, but he's too good of a prospect at a premium position to drop that far IMO.
Interesting if true... @WesBunting: The Browns LOVE Eric Berry from what I hear and may be willing to trade up to get him, if not it looks like Haden or Wilson, edge Wilson Looks like Wilson is climbing up the boards rapidly.
