From Crawfordboxes.com http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2010/6/6/1496461/amateur-draft-profile-delino Where is he projected to go right now? Keith Law has him at No. 19 to the Astros. Andy Seiler does not have him in the first round. Deep Leagues has him at No. 31 to the Rays. Jonathan Mayo has him at No. 19 to the Astros. Perfect Game USA has him at No. 27 to the Phillies. Baseball America has him at No. 19 to the Astros. Frankie Piliere does not have him in the first round. Kevin Goldstein does not have him in the first round. John Sickels does not have him in the first round.
Not only that, but he's going to be really hard to sign. The Astros said they're committing a lot of money to sign these guys so there's a chance, but he's still over-slotted. Sounds like a bad pick to me. Yay!
I don't think deshields will go much overslot. Maybe at the back of the 1st like he was projected, but he'll sign for close to the 8 pick slot i would guess
Hmm, maybe, just maybe DeShields indicated to the Astros he'd be receptive to being signed which is why they picked him so high. Surely our front office isn't THAT stupid, right?
Stros continuing with the up the middle philosophy. I don't mind going up the middle with catcher, shortstop, and 2B/CF in our last 3 first round picks. Would be awesome if Mier and Deshields is our double play tandem of the future, but that's a ways away. If Deshields is going to be as hard to sign as they say, and seems to be drafted earlier than most projections, I just hope that our staff is right on the guy. Curious to see what we do next...
I'm to the point of just giving up on this team until Wade, Smith, Drayton and the entire group are gone. This entire downtrend started when the geniuses in the front office began passing up on power and OBP for this "speed and defense" nonsense, completely ignoring that the true success of 2004-05 came from a historically dominant pitching staff - not the likes of Everett, Ausmus and Taveras. Here, you have a truly dominant lefty power bat with discipline, several elite pitchers... and you go for a speedy middle infielder. I'm not claiming I know DeShields, and he could be a good player. I hope he is. But it's the organizational emphasis that has been the biggest problem in recent years, and this tells me it still hasn't changed. Long years ahead...
I won't judge till we see what happens at 19 but its a risky move. I will assume they know he will sign him even if it will cost them some cash.
The Astros over-reach for players so they can still sign them at slot value. While they would have went over-slot at 19, they will go slot at 8. Our system is in dire need of a power bat, and we pass on 2 of them in Choice and Sale.
If Delino doesnt like signing bonus offered by the team who chose him, he'll go play baseball at LSU.
The team seems to forget a Mark Teixeira is more valuable than a Brian Roberts, even if Roberts is a very good player. I have to think this pick had to do with money.
