A sad state.....I find it sad that player signings is a huge sigh of relief. Yet, I check this thread every time there is an update hoping to see that the top prospects are signing.

Plutko & Jones (and maybe Velasquez & Pena, haven't heard any rumblings about them thinking college) are the only notable ones you really need to worry about. Just a matter of time on DeShields.

...definitely better than the alternative though.

I guess everything happens for a reason....

@BenBadler: Man, sounds like even Panama will be better next year. 2011 should be a banner year for amateur talent, IFA and draft #July2

Per the Chronicle, 1st rounder Michael Kvasnicka has signed for $960K.

That they are 2 positions that have high value, and are also 2 positions usually fielded by the best players on a HS team, or even college, but often have to switch to another position in the majors.

Peter Gammons was talking about it the first day of the draft. The vast majority of catchers change position because of a variety of reasons.

Edit: I think he said Joe Mauer was the only starting catcher drafted in the first round right now in the majors. I may be misremembering, but it was an amazing fact about Mauer.

Matt Wieters and Buster Posey are both high first rounders but anyway, point taken.

Posey wouldn't have been included, but Wieters would of. Wish I could remember exactly what he said, but it was surprising.

Michael Kvasnicka hit a homer in his first bat in pro ball. By the way, he is playing right field.

Like deshields, I imagine they'll try the positional transition in the offseason.

Last I read, he attended student orientation @ LSU. The Astros reported offered him $1.5 million (which is more than they just signed Foltynewicz for @ #19) and he turned it down, so the prospect of signing him isn't looking very good.

The Astros signed their second-round pick, RHP Vincent Valesquez.
