^^^So he doesnt like Velasquez(who the Astros seemed happy to get at that spot) but likes Wates and Doran? Correct? Is he saying Doran and Wates are spectacular players?
Yea wasn't to clear on that but seems to love Wates/Doran. I asked him about Ben Heath but haven't got a response yet.
Heard lots of positive stuff about Wates, good job by the Stros to move on him. Mayo loved the pick on mlb.tv.
Really hope they sign JJ, the chance to get a guy with first round talent in addition to the other 3 first rounders would be great.
Don't forget about Plutko, our 6th rounder. He's another one with first round talent who dropped because of his committment to UCLA.
I have a question since I don't really follow baseball all that much. With all the guys the teams draft each year, how do they fit all of them on the minor league team? Do they just cut people that are sucking to make room?
Yep they cut guys and keep players with real shot to progress going through the system. We just released Josh Flores, a pick from a few years back who pounded the ball his rookie year. In a good system (unlike the one Tim Poopura ran previously) you have to constantly produce and make strides or you are gone. So that means no more 4th or 5th year minor leaguers barely sniffing double A like Purpura had going since he wasnt drafting or signing well. Hope this helps.
I think we only get one of Plutko or Jones. I would rather have Jones. Both are first round talent, but JaCoby is playing a premium position and has a higher ceiling in my opinion. Plutko is a command who doesnt have overpowering stuff at this point in time. Either would be welcomed though. GET IT DONE ED WADE AND CO.
First, we aren't going to sign all 52 players we drafted. Second, we have 8 teams across the minor league system from Rookie level through AAA. The players we do sign will get sent to various teams and levels. For example, last year, 3rd rd pick Telvin Nash went to the GCL (Rookie league), 1st rd pick Jio Mier went to Greeneville (another Rookie league) and 5th rd pick Brando Wikoff started at Short A Tri-City before finishing the season at Low-A Lexington. Also, some players will get pushed upward to make room at the lower levels and I imagine that we will cut ties with some older players before the start of next season. One way or another, they'll find room for the players that they sign who are ready to play.
Yeah a small portion will not be signed. I say Wade signs somewhere in the region of 25-30 players from this draft. I'm very happy we have 3 drafts under our belts now. Lets begin making these draftees better with good coaching and smart maneuvering through the ranks of the minors.
Astros ink 9 #mlbdraft picks: Doran (4) Buchanan (8) Shirley (9) Redinger (11) Robinson (12) Wallace (16) Sogard (26) Cole (34) Lane (41)
A good start, though half of those were college seniors, so they were extremely likely to sign. Good job though signing Redinger this quickly a a HS player from the 11th round.
OremLK on crawfishboxes.com that Lane the forty first round pick was a pretty intriguing signing. He had a commitment to Auburn: "As might be expected, these are mostly college players. Bryce Lane is an intriguing late round sign, as he had great stats (.444 with 21 homers) this season as a sophomore in community college, and had a commitment to Auburn."
I just read that Redinger skipped the state championship game last week so he could workout for the Astros at Minute Maid Park. I don't understand that but I guess he really wanted to play pro ball. Redinger had signed with Penn State. The other guy who kind of intrigues me is Bryce Lane, the 41st round pick. He signed to play with Auburn. This past season at Gulf Coast Community College, he hit .444, 21 home runs and 76 RBI. The other guys on list were seniors so easy signing for the Stros.
I thought about mentioning Lane since I saw he was from a CC, and thus have two more chances in the draft. I'd like to know how much they signed these guys for.
This early in the process I can't imagine the Astros or any team paying over slot for the picks they sign. As it gets closer to August, that is when the teams start increasing as the Fall semester stars.
I agree, I expect Heath and Wates to sign. It's pretty easy to sign college juniors. If I was to guess, they end signing Velasquez but not Plutka or Jones. If Velasquez doesn't sign, they will get a extra 2011 2nd round pick in what is considered to be one of the best drafts in a long time.
