alysonfooter On KRIV Ch. 26, DeShields says he was leaning toward playing college football until he was drafted so high.He is definitely wanting to sign.
hsf09 you are absolutely sick! Thanks for all the info. I tried to rep you and rockets934life but can't either one of you. Thanks guys
Anthony Rendon 3B and Taylor Jungmann P. There was a lot of talk about who would go number #1 in this draft if Anthony was eligible and most were picking Anthony over Harper.
One other tidbit on Anthony. He has a real good chance of breaking Berkman's Rice career home run record of 67 next year. Anthony hit 20 last year as a freshman, which set the Rice freshman record, and 26 this year. They were also using -5 bats back then as opposed to the -3's now used.
Bobby Doran likely to sign http://lubbockonline.com/sports/2010-06-09/rockies-take-bettis-76th-overall Ben Heath also expected to sign though he needs a lawyer http://www.centredaily.com/2010/06/09/2025886/catch-ing-up.html
We may very well end up near the 8th spot again. Right now we are ahead of Cleveland & Baltimore, tied with Arizona, and within 1 game of Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, & Seattle.
Well if we trade away our big guns (Oswalt, Berkman, maybe even Meyers?) then that should really help us towards locking up the worst record in baseball Also, Jason Churchill wrote an article about steals of rounds 5-10, and while Jacoby Jones was not mentioned in depth in the main article, he was listed as one of the "Other notables"
I agree with you, but until a firesale happens, I can't assume it will. Jones is a steal if they can sign him. I really wish the budget was $20 million instead of a reported $10 million.
http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/article/20100609/HSSPORTS/100608022 I dont think they'll be able to get him signed.
I don't understand the dad saying they used to draft on talent and now they do it on signability. Why would a team draft you if you won't sign? If he would accept slot money he could have been a first round pick.
That dad sounds kinda.... I don't know. He's talking about how his son would be "giving up a college education". Ummm, no he isn't. He's just deferring it to play pro sports. If he's as gifted as he's supposed to be, I'm sure he'll make plenty of money and go back to college after he and his children's financial future are secured. Then he says that they used to draft for talent, not signability. Ummm, why would a team draft a guy in the first round if the guy was going to go to college, thereby wasting the pick? Finally, he sasy that they didn't want to sound greedy, but they were asking "way above seven figures" to sign. First, yes that does sound greedy since those sorts of figures go to 1st and 2nd picks in the draft, and basically a budget buster for most any team to meet. Second, it smacks of Boras tell his client to leverage college into basically blackmailing any team that might sniff around. So, I doubt this deal gets done, but I'm sure there are plenty of people around who will blame it solely on Drayton being "cheap", quickly forgetting how they've already offered WAYYY more than slot money to the kid).
Yeah I saw that as well and think he's completely wrong on that. As you said, why would you draft a person that high who isnt going to sign? There's a reason he went in the 19th round, and well, it appears your still not backing down from your 1 mil+ demands. Unfortunate but he can be the next Chad Jones.
I still hold out hope the Stros go out of character and overpay for JJ, the dude appears to be a 1st rd talent stuck in a 19th rd brain...
Here is some great writing: "Heath is the Astros’ highest drafted catcher since they selected former Stanford star Jason Castro in the 2008 first round. " In other words, they didn't spend a higher draft pick on a catcher for all of one year.
Funny, I get the exact opposite impression. It is very difficult to read text versus nonverbal clues, but it sounds like it is all about greed. The college education seems like a bluff to me. Getting Boras to consult is a sign that Jones wants to sign, but wants to get more than he is worth. The Astros want him. He wants money. The Astros have already offered more than his pick is worth. Hopefully, the road to Abilene is not taken.
