Didn't realize there was also a college. Not surprising about Heath. He was a utility player with no position when he came to college. Plus most catchers drafted end up playing a different position in the majors.

You aren't going to pay 7 figures for a 19rd pick but JJ is much better then that but with his commitment, Boras and money demands it made sense for teams to back off.

I say Uncle D will pay up for this guy and it will be up to JJ to decide if he wants to play here or not.

1. Delino DeShields - 2B/CF - Woodward Academy (GA)

DeShields has two things really working in his favor: his plus speed and his bloodlines. His dad of the same name spent many years in the big leagues, and the hope is that the younger DeShields could be a similar type of player. He does have the potential to be a very good hitter and puts his speed to use on the basepaths. He has more than enough range to handle center field and the hands to play second if a team wanted to give that a look. Scouts have had a hard time getting a consistent read on DeShields. He's toolsy and seems like he'll fall right into the old risk vs. reward debate. It seems likely a team will be willing to take the plunge at some point not too deep into the Draft

1b. Mike Foltynewicz - RHP - Minooka (IL) Community High School

Two years ago, fellow Illinois prep product Jake Odorizzi raced up Draft boards late and ended up going in the supplemental first round. Foltynewicz is more of a known quantity and could do quite well when the Draft comes around. That's because of his plus fastball with plus movement, a good changeup and clean mechanics. The breaking ball needs some work but should be fine with more instruction. While it's typically been the prep arms from the warm-weather areas who go first, Foltynewicz is positioning himself to be one of the first from the Midwest to go off the board.

1c. Mike Kvasnicka - C/3B - Minnesota

Kvasnicka whips the bat through the zone, and while there's some lift to the swing he doesn't utilize his lower half and is probably going to hit for doubles power at best, especially from the left side.

He's disciplined with good plate coverage and has the bat speed to let the ball travel and still make contact. He has arm strength but still needs work on getting from the crouch to release, as he's relatively inexperienced behind the dish and isn't even the full-time catcher for the Gophers.

His value comes down to whether a team thinks he can catch; if he can, he should go in the top two rounds, but if not, his bat probably won't play in an outfield corner due to his lack of power projection.

Kvasnicka was once a vaguely interesting college outfielder. A move behind the plate, however, has made him much more intriguing. His defensive ability is still quite raw, but his athleticism and above-average arm strength give him a chance. He hasn't hit with much power this year but has shown a good approach at the plate. A switch-hitting catcher who can hit and catch is a hot commodity, and that's why Kvasnicka's stock was rising as the Draft approached.

2. Vincent Velasquez - RHP - Garey HS (CA)

Velasquez raised many eyebrows with his breakout performance at the Urban Youth Academy. In the past, Velasquez had largely been a position player, partially because of an injury and partially because that's how he viewed himself. He may be forced to change his view because there's no doubt scouts see him on the mound after he was throwing a live fastball a good curve and a plus change. Add in good athleticism, excellent mechanics and the kind of projectable body scouts love, if Velasquez continues to throw that well, he'll move up the charts among high school arms in a hurry.

3. Austin Wates - RF - Virginia Tech

Wates is a rare breed: a toolsy college hitter. The Virginia Tech standout's best tool is his speed and he should be a base-stealing threat at the next level. He can swing the bat, too, and projects to hit for more than enough average. What he's not going to do is hit for a ton of power. That, and his lack of a true position -- he's playing first and left field this season -- are the only real knocks against him. He has the skills to play left full-time and could be a future table-setter. Those are always in high demand, so don't expect Wates to last long on Draft day.

4. Robert "Bobby" Doran - RHP - Texas Tech

Doran is a big, physical righty with the repertoire to potentially stick as a starter, but also a two-pitch combo that could play well in the pen should he wind-up there. His fastball can get up 93/94 mph, but is more regularly in the 90-92 mph range (and he can hold that velocity deep into starts). His best secondary is a mid- to upper-70s 2-plane curve that flashes above-average and shows good shape. A bit of an uneven season likely keeps him out of early round consideration,

5. Ben Heath - C - Penn State

The 6-foot-2, 220 pound junior was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Award, given to college baseball's top player each year. He was also named a Louisville All-American and a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, honoring the nation's top catcher. There was only one other catcher to make the Howser list as a semfinalist.

Heath also broke Penn State's home run record, hitting 19 in 198 at-bats. He also had 16 doubles and one triple while hitting .398 at the plate with a .451 on-base percentage. He walked 31 times and struck out 38 times, both pretty good rates for a catcher. This was the first season he's gotten serious playing time, as he walked just eight times in 97 at-bats in 2008 and played almost never his freshman year.

He did play in the Big Ten, which had a down year talent-wise. Against first-round pick Alex Wimmers, Heath was 1 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout in their only meeting. He also faced Texas A&M's Michael Wacha, who was an All-Big 12 honorable mention, and was 1 for 4 with two strikeouts. That's not a lot of evidence about his batting skills, but it appears he's got a little bit of pop.

Now regarded as one of the top catchers in the nation — one American League scout said Heath could be drafted as high as the second round Tuesday — landing an All Big-Ten spot hasn’t been easy...

...the 21-year-old is being mentioned among the top college baseball players in the country, remnants of Penn State (22-30) season that saw the North Mecklenburg HS alum hit .369 with 57 RBIs and a Nittany Lions-record 19 home runs. That total shattered a 32-year record set by Dave Simononis...

...Recently, Heath was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American Second team, the first Penn State all-american since Wes Roehr in 2002.

In addition, only two NCAA players — Heath and University of Miami catcher Yasmani Grandal — have been named an All-American, Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist and Johnny Bench Award semifinalist.

6. Adam Plutko - RHP - Glendora HS (CA)

In a strong year for high school arms, there are a few elite names at the very top followed by a fairly deep crop right below. Plutko probably fits in the latter group. He was getting extra buzz early in the spring with strong performances, showing a fastball up to 93-94 mph and an excellent changeup. His breaking stuff has been a bit inconsistent, and that might be what keeps him from joining that top group of prep arms. But with a quick arm, a projectable and athletic frame and a pretty good idea of how to pitch, Plutko shouldn't have to wait too long to hear his name called.

7. Roberto Pena - C - Eloisa Pascual HS (Puerto Rico)

No Puerto Rican draft would be complete without a top-flight defensive catcher, and the most-obvious 2010 candidate is Roberto Pena, a converted shortstop with one of the strongest throwing arms of any prospect in the entire draft. Scouts say that Pena’s defensive ceiling is at least equal to the three Molina brothers, who have gone on to become big-league catchers, although it will take a while to develop his hitting skills.

8. Jake Buchanan - RHP - N.C. State

The Astros probably drafted Buchanan more on his performance in the Cape Cod League than anything he's done at North Carolina State. Last summer, the 6-foot, 221 pound righthander went 3-1 with a 0.84 ERA on the Cape and only six walks in 43 innings. He complemented that with 38 strikeouts.

Buchanan threw 105 innings at NC State this season over 17 starts. He struck out 96 while walking 27 and gave up 112 hits. He also threw one complete game, so his pitch counts were probably up there. Another interesting note? In his senior year of high school, Buchanan had an 0.37 ERA and struck out 147 in 15 games. That's pretty dominant.

His raw stuff isn't that great. He has an average fastball that seldom crosses 90 MPH but has two above-average breaking pitches in his curve and his change. His command is also great, which is one of the reasons his ERA and strikeout numbers have been so good despite average stuff.

9. Thomas Shirley - LHP - Xavier

The 6-foot-5, 220 pound lefthander was the first lefty taken by the Astros in this draft. Interestingly, he he's a big kid but lacks a great fastball, as it sits right around 90 MPH. Again, no video on him, but he's got the height to remind some Astros fans of Andy Pettite, I'm sure. He gets good sink on his fastball, so he may be able to live with his velocity not gaining too much.

The reason video would be helpful is that the scouting report I read on Baseball America suggests he has a herky-jerky finish to his delivery, landing stiffly on his front leg. That extra stress can usually lead to injury if it's not corrected, but I don't know how severe the problem is. Andy Seiler didn't mention it in his Draft Notebook, so it may not be a big deal.

Shirley was undrafted out of high school and has developed his command nicely. He'll need to work on his offspeed stuff, but will be able to generate some ground balls with his two-seamer.

10. Evan Grills - LHP - Sinclair Secondary School (TOR)

Grills, a tall, thin LHP with great upside, is the top Canadian prospect in the 2010 class. His delivery is low effort and his arm action is clean resulting in a high 80s fastball, plus curveball and deceptive change. He is a poised and mature young pitcher who has future front of the rotation ability.

Wallace is a good-looking player, and I heard one American League area scout say he likes Wallace as a prospect. Wallace has a sturdy catcher’s build and has done very sound work behind the plate. He also blasted two opposite-field home runs in Houston’s first game of the weekend against Baylor.

17. Tyler Burnett - 3B - Middle Tennessee State

Tyler Burnett has performed well in a number of different positions in the line-up this season beginning the year as the lead-off and then moving to the clean-up spot for a while. He has 12 games with three or more hits. In 13 games he has recorded multiple RBI. In the series finale with Troy he went 2 for 5 with a double, home run, and four RBI to help hand the Blue Raiders the series win. Burnett ranks in the top in the Sun Belt in four categories including batting average, slugging percentage and total bases.

While Manny Machado in Miami gets most of the buzz regarding high school bats these days, and rightfully so, Jones isn't too far behind. The Mississippi prep product could have a special bat, with plus power. He has all the tools to stay at shortstop, with good hands and excellent range. Even if he outgrew short, it looks like he might have enough bat to handle a corner position. He's not going to be the first prep position player to go off the board, but he shouldn't have to wait too long to hear his name called.

One of the top defensive players to ever play the outfield for the Gamecocks and does so much for the pitching staff with the balls that he can run down…a fourth-year player that is expected to start in center field every day…has pop in his bat and has improved each year at the plate.

Catcher Zach Dygert doesn't have an outstanding tool but has a lot of decent ones and plays the game hard. He's a sturdy 6-foot-3, 215-pounder with average arm strength that would play better if he shortened his release. He has some righthanded power but not an especially quick bat.

I totally agree with you. It doesn't seem like an unreasonable amount of money to sign someone who probably would have gone the first day if he looked signable. This is one pick I really hope the Astros get signed.

I am actually pretty darn excited about day 2, looks like we went for some signablity guys hoping to hit it big which means Uncle D is ready to start spending on the draft. The Stros had to know how important this draft was and I think it showed.

From last years scouting report(drafted by Yankees)

Adam Bailey was a pitcher on Arizona State's 2007 College World Series team before transferring to South Mountain (Ariz.) CC and then Nebraska. The 6-foot, 189-pounder is now a starting outfielder who led the Cornhuskers with 12 homers. He has good bat speed and would offer even more lefthanded power if he turned on more pitches. Despite his arm strength, he'll fit best in left field as a pro.

Nebraska’s biggest bopper by far, though, is Adam Bailey. The senior outfielder leads the Big 12 with 15 long balls and is tied for the conference lead with 45 RBIs.

“He’s just unreal,” Asche said. “He’s got some pop.”

Bailey’s approach at the plate this season has remained consistent: Hit the ball middle-away and good things will happen.

Giants fans will want the organization to sign this 6-foot-7 junior, if only for his surname. Champion did have a lopsided win-loss record (3-7), however, and sported a 5.60 ERA.

Again, from last year

Champion does have pro size, but he lacked the results to merit a high pick. I did think Champion might be picked in the top 30 rounds as a tall college junior with decent stuff, but I also think he’s a LOOGY in the long-run. It’s looked to me like Champion will return for his senior year.

25. Rodney Quintero - RHP - Chipola Junior College (FL)

Quintero was one of the more pleasant surprises from the tournament. I had seen his stats prior to game play and was happy to see that his stuff matched his early success.

He started the game throwing 88-89, but was up to 92 before the first inning was over. Once he had a chance to warm up, he was throwing more consistently in the 92-93 range.

His secondary stuff never seemed to come together for him. He eventually seemed to tire, as hitters knew to identify and wait for his fastball, including one that CSN left fielder Marvin Campbell blasted over the wall in left-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning. Quintero appeared to throw a slider that lacked bite thrown at 77-78, and while he did snap off a couple of good, low-70s curveballs, the pitch wasn’t thrown consistently well. At least not on this day.

Possibly his most impressive attribute was his fearless approach. He challenged hitters with his fastball, and stepped up twice to strike out Bryce Harper swinging on high heat, both times with the count full.

He has a stocky strong frame, and frequently changed his arm angle from a high three-quarters slot to nearly side-arm to give hitters different looks. Once he is part of a professional organization I see his delivery settling in to the low-three-quarters area, and he may be better off in relief given the lack of a polished repertoire.

And if he is given the chance to relieve, I could see him throwing harder in shorter stints, and his aggressive nature would serve him well in such a role.

Kiilsgaard’s baseball skills have continued to evolve since he elected to abandon a college football career, as a linebacker, after originally attending Stanford to play both sports. It was clear early on that something had to give after he got only three at-bats for the Cardinal as a freshman, and he responded by hitting .313-9-36 for Stanford last spring as a baseball-only player. His evolution as a baseball prospect continued this summer, when he hit .295-1-26 for the Anchorage Bucs, topping the team in RBIs. Kiilsgaard’s superior athletic ability is immediately obvious, and it’s most apparent in the way he can run for a player his size. With a powerful 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame, Kiilsgaard has significant power potential, as well. He can drive balls with authority from the left-center field gap to the pull side, but is a very streaky hitter and it all depends on the day you see him how he is evaluated. When Kiilsgaard is seeing the ball well, he’ll attack pitches and his power is apparent. On other days, he struggles to produce bat speed, is prone to empty swings and his power potential isn’t so apparent. Kiilsgaard has good range in the outfield because of his superior speed, but there are mixed opinions about his arm. He has the arm strength, but an unorthodox, sling-like throwing action often produces undesired tailing action on his ball. While Kiilsgaard has obvious physical ability, he still has a ways to go to refine and establish consistency in almost every phase of his game.

I think someone made a slight reference earlier to having another Jacoby Jones. How ironic would it be if the baseball JJ became an explosive player with the bat and on the base paths but who's one knock would be the inability to catch towering pop ups
