They spend some serious cash all over the place, it's nice not to be afraid who to pick regardless of slot. Footer the hottie says the Stros are VERY excited about VVelasquez.
Vincent Velasquez - RHP Garey HS, Pomona, Calif., Sr. Birthdate: 6/7/1992 Height: 6'3" Weight: 185 lbs. Bats: Both Throws: Right Scout's report filed: 2/13/10 Scouting Report Fastball: Velasquez opened some eyes by throwing his fastball 90-93 mph. Fastball movement: He usually has some heavy life to his pitch, with sink and bore and late giddyup. Curve: His curve grades out as average right now and he threw it 74-76 mph. Changeup: It's a plus pitch right now, throwin 80-83 mph. Control: It was just one inning, and his first in nearly two years, but he threw strikes in the outing. He's a good athlete with plus delivery and arm action, so command doesn't look like it should be much of an issue. Poise: It was solid; he looked like he knew what he was doing on the mound. Physical Description: He looks the part of a pitcher, with broad shoulders, long arms and legs and plus projection. Medical Update: A stress fracture in his elbow kept him from pitching at all in 2009, but he's healthy now. Strengths: Three average to plus pitches that it looks like he can throw for strikes. Long, projectable frame with room for growth. Weaknesses: He hasn't pitched in so long, scouts will want to see him repeat the performance. Even without the injury, he's thought of himself as a position player, so they'll also want to know if he wants to pitch full-time. Summary: Velasquez raised many eyebrows with his breakout performance at the Urban Youth Academy. In the past, Velasquez had largely been a position player, partially because of an injury and partially because that's how he viewed himself. He may be forced to change his view because there's no doubt scouts see him on the mound after he was throwing a live fastball a good curve and a plus change. Add in good athleticism, excellent mechanics and the kind of projectable body scouts love, if Velasquez continues to throw that well, he'll move up the charts among high school arms in a hurry.
thescorer Astros drafted converted shortstop Velasquez as a pitcher. Another good change-of-speed guy who goes up to 93 mph. -Z
Hah, well they gotta move fast! 50 rounds total, correct? Through Round 30 I believe today? Yes, No? Astros dont pick again til 90
Honestly don't even know where to start looking for that, I mean the last guy I knew about was Golden and the 3 draft kids from 07 lol. If they ever decided to let teams trade picks, this could get WILD.
At this point, no clue so I'll catchup later...hopefully they draft someone not expected to sign and throw some cash at him.
Yeah on draft tracker says the knocks on him was the lack of power and no true position. Says he played LF and 1B last season; though he has the skills to play LF fulltime
