Power hitters and reliable infielders don't have to be mutually exclusive -- though you're right we need a good balance. I just wish we'd throw some power into that balance.. I'm not sure we have many big bats in our minors right now.
We reached on Lyles and he's developing into a pretty nice pitcher. And didn't we draft Telvin Nash in the 3rd round last year to provide some power into our system?
Or sign one in free agency. Or trade a pitching prospect for one. This farm system has needs all over the place. While people may disagree with the selections, it at least seems like the Astros went with BPA on their board.
In three years, if these last two picks pan out, the Astros will have the least pronounceable lineup in MLB.
Now why would they sign a free agent a might lose one of their picks next year? It would of been cheaper for them to draft Choice or Sale. Anyways I'm done. I just don't like how Astros do things.
Why do you assume Choice and Sale are sure things? If they turn out to be a poor man's Pete Incaviglia or Jack Cust, and Deshields is Jimmy Rollins, how does that look? The MLB draft is the biggest crap shoot of all -- a guy like Albert Pujols wasn't even drafted in the first 10 rounds. But go ahead, and be done. Based on a couple of 2 minute highlight clips, and 3 or 4 blog opinions, I'm sure the Astros would have been much better off with Choice or Sale.
I am going to do the unthinkable for an internet message board. I am going to admit I don't know CRAP about any of these players. However, I hope we sign all of them...the more oysters you go through the better your chance of finding a pearl...or some other analogy. The Astros pretty much need everything..so its not like the Rockets draft where we are looking for something in particular.
Personally, I don't care too much about 1st round picks in MLB draft, unless the Astros draft purely for signability reasons(which they don't seemed to have done this year). It's the later rounds which show just how willing the Astros are in rebuilding the farm. If they reach for players who drop for signability reasons, then give those players fat bonuses, that's when you know the team's devoted to rebuilding. And not using that money for another Matsui or Feliz.
Hopefully Nash can flash some of that power in short-season ball and make strides as a hitter, because to say that he struggled in the Gulf Coast League is quite the understatement, as he barely cracked .600 in the OPS column.
Interesting that as I've read a few draft recaps so far, no one seems to have an issue with the players the Stros picked and even praise them for going High School and basically signalling the rebuilding process has begun however the slots that they were chosen at seems to be what most people's issue is. Stros seemed to reach on these guys, not by much, and seemed to be stuck on these players no matter who was there that wasn't expected to be. I won't lie and say I am pumped when you could have had Sale, Cox and Jackson but, like most have said, the draft is such a crap shoot and picking sexy names is no guarantee of what is to come. Today should be pretty interesting to see if they go over slot of some guys and gamble a bit.
Agreed. Media pundits look at guys for a few weeks leading up to the draft. Scouts watch guys for months, sometimes years. Given Heck's track record, I'll go along with his data and projections over that of the media. Bottom line is to get good players who will make it to the bigs, regardless of draft position. Hopefully they've done that on day 1.
MLB.TV is basically praising them for going for the guy they wanted not who should go. Stetson Allie is asking for 3 million, hoping the Stros make a leap to payup and draft this kid.
Assuming he signs, #Astros pick Delino DeShields will likely debut in Greeneville rather than the Gulf Coast League. -Z(Zach Levine)
http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2010/06/st_edward_star_stetson_allie_s.html The good news is that the second round begins Tuesday at noon. So, the battle cry around the Allie household can be, "Wait 'til tomorrow." Cleveland fans know that all too well. _________ Ouch! The way that writer poured salt in the wounds of the home town fans probably makes Richard Justice jealous.
DAM they going fast, the announcers can't even keep up...wish the NFL was like this lol Royals just took the kid from Arkansas that the Stros picked in 07.
