Foltynewicz gives Hou best HS arm in IL 2 yrs in row (Bushue last year). I like how Hou takes the guys it wants, bucks consensus. #mlbdraft

Gotta give Astros credit. Didn't go the quick help college route. 2 HS guys in first round of #mlbdraft

The two things I noticed watching the videos last week was his big frame and how much tail his fastball had with all the velocity.

Like so many of us, I have no idea who this guy is but if he is projected to be a front of the line starter than I'm happy with that

MJ4Sports Baseball America has Mike Foltynewicz as the 24th rated RHP in this draft. Seems like another guy they are taking higher than normal.

The best pitcher the Astros have in their system (Lyles) is another guy that all the mock draft boards told us was a reach a couple of years ago.

My earliest baseball draft memory is reading all the shining, glowing endorsements when the Reds drafted the consensus #1 guy off of the boards in C.J. Nitkowski ('92, IIRC?). Man, the way Baseball America and Baseball Weekly were talking about him, I was sure the Reds had just gotten their ace for the next decade. I think they said he had like 5 major league quality pitches (3 of them real "out" pitches), and should be in the majors within a year.

i mean its all what we rank them.

half the first round won't ever play in the major leagues, maybe more than that.

there is no "good first round value"

you take who u have ranked the best and what you like.

we got the 2 guys we thought we would get, and the 2 guys we wanted.

now sure we might have overrated them or even underrated them. but we got our guys.

The report on MLB.com has it even higher, topping out at 96:

because some writer said so? :)

honestly, these are HS kids. let's give it time before we judge either way. this is why the baseball draft is so bleh....and that's coming from someone who loves baseball. but typically the impact of a draft isn't felt for quite some time, especially compared with other sports where you draft guys in the first round to be starters next season.

I would hope that people don't really think that baseball mock drafts are anywhere close to being of the accuracy that basketball or football ones are.

For christ's sake, this is only the 2nd year the draft has even been televised. There are just waaaay too many players available to really be accurate on assessments, outside the super-duper talents (like Harper, Strasberg, etc.).

I think the rankings had him lower then most because he is committed to UT and thus signablity is an issue.

Saying that, Stros better know what they are doing....

Pitching and defense. Pitching and defense. Clemens is the only true power bat we have in the minors. Martinez has a great SLG, but largely because of his amazing average and his gap ability.

It's not the kids I'm worried about, it's the management. ;)

To be fair, P&D is a great way to rebuild an organization...kind of like building the O and D lines in the draft however I feel you that a power bat would be REALLLYYY nice.
