before i clicked onto the thread to see the results i was gonna chime in with new york. it is amazing how bad the drivers are here. in the city it has to do with all the obstacles, pedestrian and otherwise, and an utter inability to make quick decisions. taxicab drivers are the spawn of satan. cars and trucks double-park all over the place. i could go on and on but...

the study itself is testing licensed drivers' knowledge of the roads.
i think it's right for NY to be #1, not because of its crazy drivers, but because of it's high number of licensed drivers that do not own a vehicle and might rent occasionally, or if they do own they keep it in their garage for most of the year and don't get out in the city.

Because I can tell you right now that the drivers in Houston, Austin, and Los Angeles would all surpass New Yorkers in the "Crazy Driver" category.

the thing I loved about driving in NYC was that there were no rules, and everybody just invented their own rules for merging in and out of traffic, dealing with street parking, etc.

it forced you to be much more clever in your tactics, some cars would go double wide down a one lane street. People working together in harmony.

it was a free for all! that itself is a beautiful system.

Agreed 100%. Having driven in both Houston and LA for extensive periods of time, Houston drivers have no idea what they get themselves into when they drive in LA.

For example: there are no feeder roads to the freeways. None. You have to find the entrances by following the signs, and you can never guess if you should turn left or right to get to the right entrance. I could be driving westbound, trying to get to 110-North, only to figure out at the last minute that I should be in the left lane instead of the right lane.

LA drivers are so accustomed to heavy traffic congestion, that they'll do anything to get ahead of the traffic. They will swerve in and out of a lane, they will hit 80MPH the moment they hit open space, and cut right in front of you.

I'm starting to drive like that now (except the cut right in front one, that's just mean) :(

The craziest drivers I've ever seen, overall, were in Miami.

Also, if women drive so badly, why are our car insurance rates lower than yours?

In the Southeast region for GEICO a female is the VP, and a female is an assistant VP. They make a ton of money and give females unfair advantages.

Why did August 9, 2008 make me a better driver? I don't see what my wedding had to do with anything. (actually I had an accident the day before and haven't had anything since. Maybe they are onto something.)

my vote goes to D/FW drivers. the most blatant violation...driving like grannies in the fast (passing) lane. and, over half of them are grannies (with some of them even on their cell phones). the rest of the people driving in the fast lane are pretending to be clueless...like they don't know any better...when in reality they are just clogging up the fast lane to piss people off. i never thought i could see a granny driving and talking on a cell phone but it's pretty common around here.

Great this degenerate into men or women the better driver.

If this board doesn't tolerate racists' comments , why should it tolerate sexists' comments? First off women are bad drivers are not accurate stereotype. Even if you think so, it is not cool to say so.

Very interesting that the list of best driver states is basically the ones with the least immigrants, and basically, white people making up their population. I'm not claiming causation, but the correlation is plain to see from the list of states posted.

...and by the way - I've driven in NYC and on the 405 in Los Angeles, and there's no comparison that NYC has worse drivers. The 405 is pleasant compared to driving in NYC

Wow. Maybe I should go to my insurance company and ask them for an extra discount then. :D

They do seem to think women drive less than men, which seems strange to me; I don't know why that would be. But maybe some families have gender-role ideas about who does the driving. My husband can't drive at all for medical reasons; I tell him it's no big deal, that I can do the driving and that will be one of my contributions to the household, but he can feel frustrated. Apparently in his family, whenever they were all together his father would drive. I don't know why it's necessarily supposed to be the man's job?
