I haven't read Rothfuss and will check him out. Martin has teased us all long enough! HBO does a great job producing their series. Should be something special. Thanks, SM! It really is frustrating to be a fan of an author's series of novels. You have to wait and wait, or else you discover him/her late and devour everything in the series over the course of days or weeks (I read fast!), coming abruptly to the same end... waiting for the next one. Even worse is when the author dies without completion of the story, like Patrick O'Brian's wonderful Aubrey/Maturin series from the era of the Napoleonic Wars which, by the way, I can't praise highly enough. If you like naval fiction from the period, or simply the period itself, and haven't read O'Brian, then run to the nearest library or bookstore and get the first, Master and Commander. I've mentioned O'Brian before and for a reason... he gives Jane Austen a run for her money. It's really one long grand novel, with the final chapter or two gone missing. Doesn't matter, because he could have ended it sooner had he wished. Like the best reading, no matter how long, you can't believe it's over.
The Name of the Wind is fantasy at its absolute best. I hate calling it fantasy because the story is just so wonderful and transcends the fantasy genre. Wise Man's Fear was my third most anticipated novel of the year. Rothfuss is putting together a truly epic story, and although I hate waiting on the next book, I'm all right with the delay if the story delivers. I just finished City of Thieves, which was an awesome read. Thanks, Ottomaton, for recommending it. I got hooked and finished it off in a single day because I could not put it down. It was a great story of a young man coming of age in Leningrad during WWII. I highly suggest reading this book. Up next: Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. I saw a note at the local Barnes & Noble, which said Sanderson had this century's most difficult writing job: finish Jordan's Wheel of Time. I've heard wonderful things about this trilogy and am looking forward to it.
i couldnt get past about book 5. im going to see what people's impressions are of what your talking about and maybe ill pick it up again. im not sure i really remember everything that is going on in the series. i read the stuff SO LONG ago.
A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami Just started reading a couple of hours ago and so far, its been a great read.
Unaccustomed Earth and Interpreter of Maladies both by Jhumpa Lahiri... Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks (mix b/t music and neuroscience)
Started book 3 last night. Spoiler Book 2, Dune Messiah, was peculiar. It seemed like a pretty big shift from the first novel in terms of pacing and activity. But, I suppose the first book uses a lot of its time with hero creation, while this book focuses on characters and interactions and more character failures and falls than ascension. But, the story arch was just a completely different structure to me; most authors that I read tend to keep the same form, book to book. Dune Messiah looks towards the morality of intertwining government and religion. First book has Paul hoping to avoid becoming a religious leader, but when he realizes there is no escaping it, full speed ahead. Now Paul is dealing with the the ramifications. A large part of the novel seemed to be Herbert attempting to fix the issue of having a protagonist that knows/sees all (and the many iterations of possible future realities.) He throws ups some roadblocks, but eventually kills off Paul. (for now?) The start of Children of Dune seem to be a continuation of fixing the 'Hiro in Heroes' issue; it is boring reading about a god decide the best course to take, when he knows the future and how things will change, depending on specific actions.
I am now reading Creative Capital, the story of the first venture capitalist, Georges Doriot. It is fascinating.
I've been reading this since yesterday, never thought I'd be reading a book of the fantasy genre, first I've ever read, really good though, having a hard time putting it down (half way through it). Actually picked it up because of some posts in here.
