Speaking of never-ending series, the next book in the wheel of time is officially due to hit the shelves in November. Book 1 of the last 3 (Tor decided the book was too big - and too marketable - to be kept as one huge thing and broke it up). The whole thing should be finished by the end of 2011 - one book per year.
That's the series that made me vow to never pick up another incomplete series again. I've since broken that rule for some trilogies, but not epic tomes like Martin's series. I picked up the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson, who is writing the WoT finale. They've gotten rave reviews, and I'm anxious to dive into them after I finish the next few books in my queue.
Oh come on, the guy had a super ridiculous illness and then died. It's not like he chose to leave the thing undone (cough, martin, cough). Sanderson appears to be working like a demon on the last book(s). I have considerable hope that it's going to be epic.
Looking fwd to the last WoT book as well reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.. never eating McDonalds or related fast food again
I'm not dogging on Jordan for not finishing. I feel incredibly bad for him that he couldn't live to see his story complete. Still I started reading that series in 1990 when I was a senior in high school, and I swore that I would never get myself hooked on a series that would take decades to be finished. My experience with the WoT has definitely hardened my resolve to ignore Martin's books until they are done. I don't like speaking ill of the dead, but Jordan had lost the feel for the series for years. I'm hopeful that Sanderson can make the last 3 books as epic as the first 4 of WoT were.
Is this book worth reading, I've always wanted to read it but just never got around to buying it, need to know if its worth my time. TIA.
Fixed. Up through 7 the series was ridiculous. Nothing else compared. Nothing else even came close. 8 was somewhat dull, but 9 was, again, epic beyond epic. 10 was just plain slow. But then 11 blew my socks off. So I'd say 2 out of 11 were somewhat less jaw-dropping than the others. I can't complain. (sorry for the WoT offtopic nonsense. I happen to be somewhat of an addict of that series)
I am going to try to pick back up Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson tonight. I was able to get through the first 7 or 8 stories before I was unable to have the time to read the rest.
I've been reading a lot recently Into The Wild (book on which the movie was based - interesting but haphazardly written) The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison - OK, although I think her worldview (which underlies much of her writing) is rather simplistic and quaint Some crapfest by Jonathan Kellerman - don't even remember the title The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini - Very, very good. Recommended
i don't doubt that, but it has to be a little better after reading the book. i finished tourist season in one sitting this weekend on the beach in cozumel. love that guy.
That is an amazing book. Amazing. The movie kind of sucked, but eh, what can you do with what is mostly an industry expose. And if you read or you'll likely swear off meat as well.
I finished Everything is Illuminated, and felt kind of meh when it was over. It told a fascinating story, but it jumped around from too many perspectives. The parts from Johnathan's point of view were terrible reads, but the broken English of Alex were quite premium and manufactured many laughs. I had high expectations for this book, which were not met. I would not recommend this book to anyone else. Up next: City of Thieves by David Benioff. It's another Russian tale set during WWII. I'm halfway through and am absolutely loving it so far.
On book 2 now. I realized 1/3 the way through the first book that Robert Jordan 'borrowed' a lot of themes/characters from Frank Herbert. Upon realizing this, I decided to check on the status of the new Wheel of Time book. Sanderson is now dividing the last novel into 3 books! Each book will come out over the next 3 winters. (Initially it was to be 1 book... then 2... now 3?!?!)
I saw Gregory David Roberts at Cafe Leopold in Mumbai like 10 days after the terrorist attacks. I didn't know who he was but we had a local girl with us who went ape ish over him.
I feel your pain, i just finished rereading the entire series for the third time! Im starting to really hate george rr martin lol! Interesting sidenote; apparently they are going to film the pilot of a game of thrones for and HBO series. Im currently rereading In the Name of the Wind by patrick rothfuss. Its a great book and actually made me temporarily forget about my anticipation for A dance with dragons. Unfortunately Rothfuss shares not only Martin's ability to tell a great story, but also his inability to meet deadlines! As the next book in his series "A wiseman's fear" was due out last year and the just missed deadline of April 09. Hopefully a new book by either Rothfuss or Martin will be delivered this fall. But despite it being the first part of an unfinished triliogy, I highly recommend "In The Name of the Wind." Its a unique and different take on the genre of fantasy and reads like anything but (in a good way).
