Budinger might have NBA-level basketball instincts, unlike Novak. That's the difference. He knows how to move without the ball, how to find a cutter and pass, how to move his feet, etc. All Novak did half the time is come out to get a pass and then give the ball up right away while making a half-hearted attempt to set a pick.

The big myth about Novak is that he was a good offensive player who's defense was poor. He was a poor offensive player too because he didn't understand the first thing about offensive flow & movement.

So your initial response of "Not impressed" after he was drafted is now what?

I haven't been able to watch the game, but it seems like if Dorsey can improve his offensive game just a little bit before the season, he will see quite a bit of rotation time this coming year.

I have no doubt in my mind that Chuck Hayes could not put up those type of numbers in summer league.

Why all the white guy comparisons?

I've heard Novak, Reddick, and Dirk on this board. The only real similarity there is skin color.

Brent Barry? Maybe. But even then - they play different positions. Joe Alexander is probably a closer fit.

A couple of things. Budinger can really jump. Yes he jumps higher than most black guys. His quickness and lateral movement are NOT actually bad. They are just average and weak when compared to his hops.

Just because he's white does not mean he is destined to be a one-dimensional player.

I'm laughing at the former doubters of Chase now!

Just because he is white, people assumed he had no game.

I digress, I think Jermaine Taylor can easily replace Wafer in due time and Budinger can have a real niche on this team with his shooting and athletic ability in the open court

The Rockets found their back up center. Lets see him do that against real competition. The pre season would be the bench mark if Dorsey can be a good role player in the NBA.

Again, they are two totally different players at two different positions.

    Chase plays SF/SG while Dirk is a C/PF playing like a SF/PF!

If anything, I see Chase can have a similar role to Pavlovic of the Lakers except Chase is much more athletic and versatile and he will be playing for a team that likely won't be a contender in the West.

I could see Budinger being a Glenn Rice-type player, at best. He's got some good building blocks, and I see a lot of potential in him.

I have yet to see Taylor play, but from what I read about him, and see in his stat lines, I think he could eventually be a good role player on this team.

Overall, I would say that I wouldn't completely mind trading Shane for a decent, young wing player. Odds are, that's not what we'll do, though.

I wish there was some way we could throw the MLE (as others have gone ape-crazy over) at Marvin Williams.

Then, I'd feel comfortable trading Shane away for a big man. I'd hate to trade Battier due to his intangibles and intelligence, though.

But like I said, I'd be content for a season with a few young, developing players (in Budginer, Taylor, Ariza, and Williams) hanging around the perimeter.

Edit: I forgot to mention McGrady (and possibly White) as someone "hanging around the perimeter..." lol.

Agreed, I like the Glen Rice comparison.. I would compare him to Rudy Fernandez/young Brent Barry....

One of these days they'll look for a decent young big I hope. Might as well have a 4 guard rotation now in the NBA. Don Nelson approves

I'm waiting to see if the pendulum of fandom swings in another direction when Chase faces real NBA defenses. I'm not about to proclaim this kid a good/great player until he faces some good d. On the other side of the coin, if what Morey said is true and he needs to step his d up, he may not see a ton of playing time. Of course then the pitchforks will be out screaming at the coach and organization for not playing him. Much like how we destroyed the careers of Stromile Swift, Bostjan Nachbar, Steve Novak, etc.. :D

From the highlights I've seen of Chase, I like his game, but like I said... I'll wait to proclaim him the next Glen Rice, who was arguably one of the best shooters to play the game.

chase seems a lot like brent barry without the PG skills. he's a good passer, smart player, can shoot lights out, and is very athletic. all things that made brent successful.

dorsey reminds me of reggie evans. same build, same beast like rebounding. the difference is joey is a heck of a shot blocker too. how much better did this guy get in a year?

I think the reason why Chase Budinger "disappears" on the court from time to time is that his hair and skin are almost the same color of off white. In the bright arena lights it's easy to lose sight of him, particularly when the Rockets are wearing light-colored uniforms.

Well, as for summer league competition, I think he has been the most impressive....

So, I would say now.....cautiously optimistic?

But these guys are not close to NBA players.....however, the things Budinger does well translates into the NBA, he moves very well off the ball...and that is a huge plus....in any league.
