I don't think we have much to offer them. DM offered Artest and they refused. I doubt if they would re-visit that. Battier by himself won't be enough. If they ask for Landry plus Shane,DM should and will probably refuse.

I did some looking into to see who the Rockets own the draft rights to and found these six players

Name / Height / Weight / Position / Drafted / Website (for Current Status)
    Frédéric Weis / 7.2ft / 260lbs / C / 15th (1999) New York Knicks / http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=ESP&PlayerID=18996
    Venson Hamilton / 6.9.5ft / 255lbs / PF-C / 50th (1999) Houston Rockets / http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/1193041483332/1193041491218/jugador/Jugador/Hamilton.htm
    Sergei Lishouk / 6.11.5f / 250lbs / PF-C / 49th (2004) Memphis Grizzlies / http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=UKR&PlayerID=37972
    Lior Eliyahu / 6.9.5ft / 225lbs / PF / 44th (2006) Houston Rockets / http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=LGD
    Brad Newly / 6.7ft / 205lbs / SG-SF / 54th (2007) Houston Rockets / http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=GRE&PlayerID=50932
    Maarty Leunen / 6.9ft / 220lbs / PF / 54th (2008) Houston Rockets / http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=TUR&PlayerID=66530

-I know Weis will never make it to the NBA (simply because of what Vince did to him j/k) he's only a rarely used backup now.
-They say only good things about Hamilton.
-Lishouk is almost average overseas so I dont see him making it to the NBA soon.
-Newly has had a great career abroad so far, I think he's ready.
    -Leunen posted 31min / 12.1 points (44.4% 2fg- 43.8% 3fg) / 6.2 rb / 1.1 a / 1.3 st, not bad deserves a look.

DOES ANYONE SEE ANYTHING TO HELP OUR TEAM!

Call in Newley and Leunen for the pre-season. Maybe Eliyahu too.

Yeah I missed Eliyahu, (Wiki) he became the first Israeli to be named the MVP of the Euroleague for a month during the season. He recorded a double double in all three games he played during December. Overall for the 2008-09 Euroleague season, Eliyahu averaged 14.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. In 2009, Eliyahu signed a 4 year contract with the Spanish Liga ACB club TAU Cerámica.

Unless Eliyahu makes a dramatic improvement in his outside shooting and becomes a passable defender,he has no chance of joining the Rockets.

I'm thinking that one or two of these guys that they still the rights to can land the Rocs a new 2nd round draft pick with more upside or a better fit for the team and can help now.

Newley and Leunen will both be playing on the Rockets' summer league team next month. Eliyahu is not coming over this summer after signing his deal overseas. He still may become a solid player over the next few years and could be brought over sometime in the future (or traded).

Given the few roster spots available, I doubt the Rockets want to bring either Newley or Leunen over next year. If the Rockets re-sign Artest and add a draft pick that doesn't get stashed overseas, there would be little room for either. If both Artest and Wafer walk, perhaps the Rockets bring in Newley as depth at the wing position. The only way I see the Rockets bringing in Leunen next year is if Brian Cook is traded early in the offseason.

League's hypothetical 2009-10 luxury tax figure is $69.4M

Multiple team trade involving 4 teams:

    MEMPHIS: 14th pick + McGrady

    SUNS: 2nd pick + Brooks + Jaric + Hayes + White (trade filler: non-guranteed, waived for $0)

NETS: Lowry + Darko + Buckner (partially guaranteed, waived for $2.127M)

    HOUSTON: Nash + Carter

    Grizzlies, Suns, Nets:

Well, Kyrylo Fesenko is off the free agency table. The Jazz just picked up their team option on him for next year.

    http://blogs.sltrib.com/jazz/2009/06/friday-report.htm

This further reiterates my point that the Jazz, despite increasing their luxury-tax-bound payroll, are smart to exercise this option, as it gives them multiple options. Even though Fesenko still would have been a restricted free agent even if the Jazz declined his option, by exercising the option for $870k, it sets up a possible trade. According to the article, the Kings are interested in him.

I definitely wouldn't mind the Rockets offering a future pick and cash to Utah for this guy. He's still a little raw, but he has the potential to be a legit force at the center position. Think of a BIGGER Chris "Bird Man" Andersen.

Is this even possible, who would allow us to get BOTH Nash and Carter for Brooks, Hayes, Mac, Lowry, and White? Btw, who would be our back up PG? Another thing, do you really think we want that awful contract from VC, it's like 4 years or something... he'll be totally washed up by year 3.

I think wg's proposal, while creative, is a pipe dream. But as to your point about VC's contract, it is actually not that bad.

Carter is set to make $16.1M next year (not too bad for a guy still in his prime), then $17.5M in 2010-11 (overpriced, but not a total salary cap killer). Where his contract gets really interesting is in 2011, when he is owed $18.3M, but only $5-7M of it is guaranteed.

This summer, the Mavericks' best trade chip is Jerry Stackhouse's contract, which is for $7M next year but is only guaranteed for $2M, allowing any team that trades for him to INSTANTLY save $5M by waiving Stackhouse. If you think THAT is a valuable trade chip, just think of what the Rockets could do in 2011 with a trade chip that would allow another team to instantly shed a whopping $11-13M (or more) off its payroll?!?!

Hence, a trade for Vince Carter (and his contract) isn't as bad as many think.

I was hoping we could get this guy. I'm with you, the Rockets should try and trade for him. It might just cost us a future pick or cash considerations

Not quite in that order. It's more the Rockets make a trade and then follow up using those newly attained pieces to make further trades...

Rockets send McGrady to MEMPHIS for 2nd pick + Jaric + Darko + Buckner

Rockets send 2nd pick + Brooks + Jaric + Hayes +White to SUNS for 14th pick + Nash
*Suns save salary in this deal

Rockets send Lowry + Darko + Buckner to NETS for Carter
*Nets save salary in this deal
*Nets GM wants to add a frontcourt player with toughness
*Nets were in need of a backup PG all season with Ager being a bust

Pablo Prigioni, the Rockets were intrested in him last summer, but he was under contract. He's a free agent now.
Prigioni was Scola's former teammate at TAU & still is his teammate with Argentina. The pick and roll is a money part of their offense/chemistry together.

VC has two more guranteed seasons left 2009-10 & 2010-11. The third and final year is non-guaranteed.

I actually think the 2011-12 season of Vince Carter's contract is PARTIALLY guaranteed for about $5-7M. Still, the same concept holds true that the Rockets wouldn't be totally screwed paying Carter the full $18.3M that season. That contract would actually be a significant trade asset at that point.

They probably would want to trade him to a weaker team. The most I would offer is a future low first rounder plus the rights to either Newley/ Leunen or cash.

    Eliyahu for Freeland?

The most valuable player the Rockets own draft rights over right now, would have to be Lior Eliyahu, MVP of Euroleague for December. As a second round pick he won't count towards the salary cap if left unsigned.

I think the best thing we can do with McGrady is keep him and hope he recovers somewhat. Of course he won't be as explosive as before but as long as he can get up and down the court, he'd still be a very productive player.

I think in a realistic case (IF he shows some rehab progress), he can approximate the season that hedo turkoglu had this past year -- A versatile point forward who can shoot, space the floor, and distribute in the half court. Their recent stats actually look pretty similar. Maybe he can average 17/4/4 while shooting 3s in the high 30%s.

C'mon -- if his name weren't Tracy McGrady, wouldn't you want that guy on your team?

Of course, if he doesn't show any rehab progress, no one would give us any value for him anyway.

I like your thinking here. If the Rockets truly believe that Freeland is an NBA-caliber center, and that Eliyahu's NBA potential is not likely to be reached, they should definitely approach Portland with this trade proposal. Still, I don't think that Morey would go with Freeland as the Rockets' backup center next season. He is too raw, and Joey Dorsey would probably be a better candidate (at least for next season), given that he has been working with the Rockets coaching and player development staff for a full year now.

I am pretty sure that Ryan Hollins, a backup center on the Mavericks is a free agent this year. He's not impressive but he is a young 7 ft, player I think is worth a look.
