wish you would have said saturday or sunday, as i wont be able to make it earlier enough for friday. caught del mccoury opening for yonder mountain string band at the paramount 3 years ago... fantastic show, awesome venue. wish ACL would bring old crow medicine show back. edit: loving the cold war kids replacement for amy winehouse.... she's horrible. and now i wont feel so bad missing the white stripes/cold war kids aftershow at stubbs sun. night, although if i can score a ticket i will undoubtedly be there.
I'm not either. I've said time and again that this year's lineup overall is the worst in the 6 years. I'm still going...gotta keep the streak alive! It's hard to say who I'm looking forward to seeing the most. I'll be at the Austin stage already for Kevin McKinney (I'm a huge Soulhat fan) so I'll probably stay and check out Del McCoury. No one else I care to see at that time anyway.
I prefer more unique band variety in a big festival like ACL. Last year had it. IMO there are too many unimaginitive acts that sound alike this year. I am going to miss not seeing QOTSA, The White Stripes (think they would be fun live), the recently added Common and of course Dylan. I think JJ Grey and Mofro might be a fun show to catch too. Still, I couldn't get myself excited about ACL like I did last year.
If you haven't seen Mofro before, they are fantastic live. I never miss them when they come to Austin.
man, most of my friends and i thought last year was one of the worst lineups ACL's ever had.... to each their own, i guess. 2005 goes down as the best year, IMO. that was practically a dream lineup for me, especially the way none of the shows i really wanted to catch overlapped.... only downer about '05 was the damn weather. i think i'm still coughing up dirt.
White Stripes and Rodrigo Y Gabriela join the disturbingly large number of performers backing out. I'd skip this year if Grace Potter and the Flecktones had any side dates in the area. I may be putting in only a few hours each day as it stands. If it weren't for the wife, I'd skip Saturday completely. I'd agree with those that say this is a weak year. And the schedule is piss poor. just found out about the white stripes..... honestly, i'm devastated. there isn't a band touring right now that i'd rather see more than them, and they were the motivating reason why i decided to go this year. this just ruined my week. this sucks.
This year will be the best if for no other reason than it will be 25 degrees cooler than normal. Two cool fronts back to back -- it's about 75 right now in Austin.
I was at that show, fantastic indeed! Although I like YMSB, I went just to see Del. They are so tight it's literally jubilating. I hear ya. I've been to every ACL, and they seem to be getting progressively worse. That's just how it works, though, eventually you'll stop going. I went to the first 3 Bonnaroo's and by the 4th one I couldn't take how mainstream/fratty it was getting. This is coming from someone who was in a frat at UT, mind you. The only reason I keep going to ACL is because it's in Austin, which is where my best friends live and it's so close to Houston. Last year I literally saw a huge SAE flag with a bunch of frat/sorority people flocking around it. Granted, I'm friends with a lot of the people that were in this little gaggle, but it still made me sick. There's a place for everything; music festivals and frats are like vinegar and water. It was, until this year Last year's highlight, IMO, was Theivery Corporation. I had never seen them and they blew me away. Ween and The Flaming Lips were also good. If it's 75 degrees when I get there, I'll pull out my bong and hit it right there I'll be so damned happy!!!
white stripes cancelled??? not to rub it in, but im glad i only bought a friday ticket. i am actually meeting someone tonite to trade my friday ticket and $90 for a 3 day wristband, but the white stripes backing out is making me reconsider. EDIT: here is the story from news 8 austin http://www.news8austin.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=191755 White Stripes cancel ACL show Updated: 9/11/2007 2:30 PM By: News 8 Austin Staff The Austin City Limits Music Festival just lost one of its headliners. The White Stripes won't play Saturday night. Concert promoters cite medical reasons for the cancellation. The White Stripes were also scheduled to play Sunday at Stubbs. There's no word on who will take their place or if the lineup will just be shuffled. Arcade Fire is also playing at the same time on the AMD stage. Jack and Meg aren't the first act to bow out of ACL this year. Amy Winehouse recently dropped out and was replaced with Cold War Kids, who are on tour this summer with the White Stripes. When Rodrigo y Gabriela cancelled, they were replaced almost immediately with Common, the smart Chicago rapper who will also perform Sunday at La Zona Rosa. A small amount of tickets for Friday and Sunday are still available.
****, i have a 3 day pass and cant make friday regardless.... now w/ no stripes saturday.... f*ck! well rumor has it that meg is the one who is sick, perhaps jack shows up somewhere, someway, somehow..... i'm praying.
maybe the racounteurs? friday is the only day where there is more than 3 or 4 acts i want to see. ive been every year and despite the consensus here, i thought the last two years were the best yet. this one is the weakest line-up, imo (especially now, w/out the stripes). saturday has been sold out for awhile and i guarantee it was b/c of them - expect ticket prices to drop significantly!
i will gladly accept that - even if i saw them last year - but somehow i doubt it. i just wanted to see some real white stripes playing white stripes songs.... especially since they haven't toured in awhile and dont have any other texas stops on their current tour.
Theivery Corp did put on a great show. I also loved Gnarls Barkley, Matisyahu, Ben Harper, Damien Marley, Galactic and of course Tom Petty. I really got into every show I saw except Van Morrison.
Glad I'm not the only one that thought Morrison was bad. Please, Van, country ain't your thing. I personally loved last year. Sunday alone was one the the single greatest days I've had there. IIRC, I went from Jones Family Singers to Brett Dennan to Black Angels to Damien Marley to Matisyahu, Flaming Lips, and Tom Petty. That was fun.
