    Per Mr. Buttocks:

"I understand how you feel; I want them both to lose. However, given a choice I choose to root against the team that beat us in the playoffs."

My exact feelings- I hate the Sours, but hate the Mavericks more. I do not want anyone injured, but hope Spurs beat Dallas, then lose in 4 games to the Clippers. Cliuppers and Cleveland in the finals. No more Detroit or San Antonio.

Man - Tony Parker was AWOL until the end. Streaky player with my next girlfriend.

The way I like to look at it is this:

The Spurs have already won more championships than the Rockets... thus, them adding one more really won't change anything in the "status" between the two franchises... they're both from Texas, and they've both won multiple championships.

Now the Mavs, on the other hand, have NEVER won a championship.... hell, they've never even won a Western Conference championship. Thus, they are waaaaaaay below the Rockets and the Spurs in terms of historical significance. They're like the Western conference version of the Miami Heat... except they weren't an expansion team in the 90's (they were WORSE than most expansion teams back then).

Thus, if Dallas were to win a championship, it would elevate them to a class that I don't want any more Texas teams to be in... the NBA championship should be thought of as a pretty elite club, not to be infiltrated by just anyone, especially not by a bunch of floppers, whiners, nut-sack punchers, all owned by the biggest ego-maniac in sports. And, with the way recent memory goes, people will be thinking Dallas has accomplished (historically) just as much, if not more, than those Rockets teams that apparently got "lucky" that Jordan wasn't around. As it is currently, NOBODY thinks Dallas has a better historical franchise than Houston.

One interesting tidbit about all of this... since 1983, only 6 (SIX!) teams have won a championship in the NBA. Its not only an elite club.... its a damn exclusive club. I definitely don't want the Mavs to join.

That 1999 championship has the only asterisk in NBA history. No self-respecting NBA fans even acknowledges a season that year. So by my count they're tied with the Rockets.

Excellent point, I completely agree with you on that one, that's exactly how I see it as well.

The main emphasis should be on preventing Dallas from joining that exclusive club, since San Antonio is already in.

Now that the Rockets are out, I think you should watch each game and just choose a team to root for in each game, you will enjoy it. Or gamble on them that would also give you a rooting interest.

    *giggle*

    Jealous, maybe?

The playoffs were the same length. You can have a season of 40 games, 50 games, 60 or 80... the elite teams are the elite teams and they're going to step it up when need be.

Anyway, that's not my main problem with the whole asterisk argument. My problem is the hypocrisy. I wasn't registered yet, but I lurked on this board as well as many other team fan site boards. No one even breathed the word asterisk before the season. No one breathed it during the season, when attendance at Rockets' games was excellent and fan support at incredibly high levels. You couldn't walk anywhere without people being ecstatic about the addition of Pippen and the chance we had that season.

So, if a majority of fans supposedly believe there's an asterisk, why did a majority of fans still pay the ticket prices to attend games and why did we care so much about the games in general? It's simple. Bias. Almost no one even breathed the term asterisk here... until a team Rockets fans didn't like won the championship. Then it came out in full-force.

Sorry, not buying that argument. Any self-respecting NBA fan has an ability to make judgments that are content-neutral... i.e., the same regardless of what team it effects. If you weren't claiming asterisk and you were acknowledging the season as legitimate when the Rockets were playing (as more than 95 percent of people I came across both in person and over the internet said), you have no right whatsoever to use the term. Sorry. Maybe you're an exception to that, but you're in a very slim minority if you are.

Furthermore, it's embarassing to me as a Rockets fan to throw around the asterisk since we hear it so much because of Jordan's retirement. Is it absurd? Absolutely. But if we want respect for our titles (which were entirely legitimate, of course), we need to extend the same courtesy to other franchises and not give out these silly asterisks. Championships are championships and trophies are trophies. The Spurs have three of them. End of story.

Has anyone else noticed that Duncan[PF] get away with murder, especially pushing away players as he drives to the basket?

A powerful post, Nick. You make a good argument. My only problem with it is that I don't want to have that extra championship we'll have to surpass, in order to have the most in Texas again. It is our destiny. (cue Star Wars theme)

The thought that SA has more rings than Houston bugs me. My wife's from there, and I watch the Spers play the Rocks with my brother-in-law, sitting in the Sperm Bank, or whatever it is, with his insufferably good season tickets, suffering through the screamin' SA fans, who deserve props for being so damn loud, as well as props for being some of the biggest idiots on the planet... the first being something I wish H-town fans did more consistantly, and the second they are welcome to, lol! ;)

Listening to my insufferable in-laws fawning over all their championships is hard to take, especially since they are fine people, otherwise. Dallas not having one almost makes up for that, I admit. It'd be nice to see Cuban suffer another humiliation, instead of listening to him whine about Nitwitski not getting calls for another round. (insert roll-eyes here)

Also, a good post, The Cat*. :D

I came to grips that the Spurs have won more championship than us, because the Rocket's can still hold onto that one little nugget that they won their championships back-to-back...the Spurs haven't achieved that.

Obviously it's a reference to "ESPN made a mistake". I advertently refer LA to LA Lakers instead of LA Clippers. I am sorry if you guys don't find it funny.

No matter who wins between Mavs & Spurts... I am rooting for the Clips vs. Heat, with Shaq winning it all.

    We shall see.

The refs are trying their best to keep the Spurs in the game.

Van Horn barely touched Duncan's ass, it was a foul on Van Horn.

Duncan pushed Van Horn -> automatic foul call on Van Horn.

Parker pushe -> automatic call on Armstrong.

If the refs tried to call this game a little bit unbiased, Dallas would have been up by 15 easily.

And this is in the 1st quarter.

Just remind them of '95 when their MVP had his ass handed to him by the best player in the world. (I'll be posting that clip on youtube very shortly)

I just wanted to ask what the Hell the Mavs are taking that makes them shoot the ball so well? 86% in the first quarter? That's absurd!

Mavericks will be flat out scary for the next several seasons. They have so many border line all star players and they are so damn athletic.

    all the Suns do it
they drive to the basket with the forearm out and sometimes into the chest of the defender

I know hand checking was bad but the new rule puts the defender
at such an incredibly bad position.
