Part of the logic behind a 1st round pick for Morris is that the pick will likely be a conveyed pick (probably in the 20's) and not have that much "value". Since the Rockets regarded TMo as a 1st rounder anyway the advantage to picking Morris in the second round is that he doesn't have a guaranteed contract. Factor that in with what was said prior about present value versus future value and he's a bargain!
I'm here. But Clutch has got this pretty well covered. I've heard the must-be-top-15 elsewhere. I don't know how it can be enforced, but I believe it. If it didn't have to be top-15, it would essentially reward the Rockets for putting off the payment as long as possible. Morris was gotten for the pick that we got for Turkcan, I believe. I'll look these things up later.
Those terms sound stupid though, JV. How would a team create a top 15 pick??? If they have it, they have it... otherwise the terms sound meaningless.
hmmm...now JV and achebe got me confused...like that's hard to do. Is it top 15 *protected* or bottom 14 *rejected*. The latter one is the article's wording, and it sounds really weird. I guess we are supposed to manufacture one via trade/sucking, or return Steve Francis.
The pick for T Morris was the Detroit 1st round pick from the Mirsad Turksan trade. http://www.nbadraft.net/draftnotes.htm
Here's my understanding: 1. If we do make the playoffs, the Grizz get our pick this year. (Would be one of the greatest comebacks, ever) 2a. If we don't make the playoffs this year, we can give the Grizz our own pick, or an acquired pick in the top 15 this year. 2b. If not, the Grizz get our pick regardless next year. Note to JV-This is not rewarding the Rockets, because if we're a perennial lottery team for these 2-3 years, which is the only way we wouldn't have had to give the pick up anyway, it's forcing a team who had been in the lottery 3 straight years to give up their own draft pick. It makes less sense to try to get a team to manufacture a pick they don't have. (If we end up in the high lotto, we should forget about being there for awhile after adding a Jason Williams, Chris Marcus, Yao Ming, etc. etc. to a 20 year old Griff, an improved backcourt, and the return of Mo Taylor) And yes, we gave Atlanta the Detroit pick from the Mirsad "they picked me over Rashard Lewis" trade.
This makes my head hurt. This is one of the weirdest deals I've ever heard of, but with the clowns who've been running the Grizzlies, anything is possible.
I think this is correct, except (per the Sun article) that maybe the Rockets can substitute an acquired top-15 pick in 2003 as well. The Vancouver Sun article was probably butchered in editing, or badly written to start with.
I am updating this with information from the thread posted by Nikestrad from the Chronicle. So, in summary, in regards to Rockets draft picks, so far we know:
We CAN keep our own draft pick this summer, but owe a pick to Memphis from the Francis trade, in 2002 or 2003, that is within 2 picks of our own pick. We will recieve a 1st round pick from Toronto this summer, as long as it is not in the lottery, and since they will probably be a playoff team this year, it's highly probable we will recieve it this year. We will receive a 2nd rounder from Detroit this summer , via the Toronto/Dream trade, which was previously traded to Toronto. We will not have our second round pick this year, since it was traded for Willis. Chicago owes us a 1st round pick from the Drew trade, but not if its in the top 19 in 2002, or top 18 in 2003. If at that time they haven't conveyed us a 1st round pick, they must send us 2 second rounders. The beauty of this pick, is that Chicago can't trade their pick in any trade they might wish to make, until it is mathematically proven they won't end up in the lottery. This gives us leverage in their trades, and has more value than just a pick they have to give us sometime in the next 2 years. In other words, if they have a trade in which they wish to use their pick, they will have to give us some type of compensation in order for a deal to go through for them. The Detroit 1st round pick we had obtained in the Mirsad Turcan trade was used to obtain Morris from Atlanta. It did not have to be conveyed to us for another few years anyway, and could have been anyone's pick in the first round. Its possible there is something due us in the Rice trade , depending on the amount of games he played due to injury, but it wasn't a first round pick. (Does anyone know the specifics of the Rice trade "future considerations?") [/list=1]
So, again in summary, we will basically have 2 first round picks this summer, ours and Toronto's, unless we decide to convey one to complete the Francis trade with Memphis, and we will have Detroit's second round pick, but not our own. We might have something coming as future considerations in the Rice trade, but the specifics of that are unknown to us.
