I didn't even know we had a GARM, unless that's the place where I've been posting the graphic descriptions of my bowel movements lately.
I've got the same problem as you but most of that has to do with topics in the D & D since I'm a news junkie and a history, politics and science nerd. OTOH I've got an argumentative and pedantic personality and love debating controversial topics and showing off my intellect to strangers. I lurk a lot in the GARM but will pop up every now and then to contribute to the general stew. I think I've got a pretty good knowledge of the game and strategy but am nowhere near the NBA knowledge of a lot of GARM posters. I mean you got people who can tell you the assist to turnover ratio of the 8th guy off of the bench for the Chicago Bulls 2 years ago. Also since I don't live in Houston or have league pass I don't get to watch many of the Rox games and get most of my Rox info here. On top of that I'm not just going to watch an NBA game if its an NBA game. If its Miami playing Washington I would rather watch the Nova special about the formation of the solar system.
The number one reason to post in GARM is because you're a fan, not because you have or don't have knowledge. Who cares? Express yourself. Do you have to have basketball knowledge to hate David Stern? Hell no!!!!
I notice that most people dont post because of too little or too much information. As a basketball snob I want to say thank you to those that dont post because they dont think they know enough, let me add, you are right All kidding aside, I want to point out that I appreciate reading the articles and tidbits that are in the GARM, what I cant stand is the basketball talk, trade talk, and any type of x and o's talk. My biggest problem is just enjoying a game of basketball, and for droxford, I would love to just enjoy the person I go with to a game or watch on tv. But as soon as basketball comes on I have to watch it, and I am not a normal person when I watch TV. I take it all in, there could be a war going on outside and I would be oblivious to it unless it knocked out my TV reception, then there would be hell to pay. Basketball just sucks me in, I want to know what guys are running, how well it works, what it works against. There are times that I really enjoy watching basketball but they are too far apart. I loved watching the Pistions defensive rotation during their championship run last year, I loved doing scouting reports and seeing amazing athletic plays that make you rewind the tape and watch it a few times, its just that I have become pretty numb to a lot of that stuff, because I have seen so much of it.
I pretty much feel the same about the GARM as most here. Anything I have to say in the GARM has most likely already been said and probably in a better way. I am pretty knowledgeable about basketball, thanks to the BBS members (took me a while to get the basics of the salary cap), and I watch just about every game the Rockets play, so I probably could post more in the GARM if I wanted to. I'm no where near the elite though when it comes to discussing the NBA/Rockets, which is why I still like reading the GARM at least occasionally. I just prefer posting in the Hangout about various things such as the Dallas Cowboys or video games (or sometimes both at the same time). If it means anything... I hate David Stern. The Dallas Mavericks/Mark Cuban/Dirk Nowitzki/Didier Ilunga-Mbenga suck(s). Tracy McGrady is incredible. Yao needs to get the ball/be aggressive/stay out of foul trouble/bodyslam the refs. I hate David Stern... and the refs.
1) No knowledge. I can talk football, not basketball. Lived in Houston 8 years ago, ever since then my knowledge goes down every day. I used to watch games ALL the time, even while still in Costa Rica but now in Europe I hardly get a chance. I've seen one Rockets game this year, that I got from a torrent. That's it. 2) Going on from point 1, I have not been able to watch as many games so I find it hard to even go into casual discussions. 3) Too many posts and threads. I spend so much time on the BBS, I can't imagine what it would be like if I checked the GARM to keep up with all the threads.
i barely ever post in the GARM and i rarely read threads other than game threads in there. why? because everything in the GARM is either 1) r****ded 2) a dead horse being repeatedly beaten or 3) r****ded. if i have something i feel that i need to say, i do - such as my last post in the GARM - i can't find it, but it was something along the lines of "DAMN!!!! **** **** **** THE REFS SUCK!" but my posts in there are extremely rare. plus, all the cool people are in the hangout - and (no offense to anybody who may take offense) posts are easier to understand in the hangout (other than SWOLY-D j/k).
I appreciate the GARM (especially as an out-of-towner) and read it regularly. Hell, most the time the only thing resembling a game watching experience I get is in reading the 'game threads'. That said, I rarely participate (other than to ask for clarification) as I probably did not see the game. Also, in the more general threads (someone getting traded etc) it seems that if you do not make a controversial post it's as if your talking to the wind as you rarely see any kind of response. I'm not the sort who get's satisfaction out of making my post and therefor my viewpoint has been heard. All of which leads to the hangout where you can actually interact with a surprisingly knowledgable and seemingly well versed group of oddballs, misfits and the glue that binds us, Rockets fans.
I dont post much really....not anymore anyway. I post to link up the game torrents...(btw...you out-of-towners need to learn how to use bittorrent...I post those links just for people like you).....and I post when I get mad enought to allow my fingers to override my brain...but then normally feel bad afterwards. adn I used to post alot more in here....but dont really have the time anymore..I try to read at least 50% of what gets posted in here...but dont hit reply unless it is something technical that I can answer... the way I see it...nobody really wants to know what I think about tstuff...Im just too weird to hit yall with most of what I think.
