I guess he's "undersized" in the sense that, ideally, you'd like a player who can match up against 4s or 5s.
Yeah, he talked about it his defensive rebounding being a little less productive than his offensive in a youtube interview and said part of the reason is that he admitted being a little unaggressive because Cousins was in the middle. The year before I believe he was the 5, but I'm not sure if his defensive rebounds were better that year. The good thing is he admits and understands why it wasn't as good so that means he knows what to improve on instead of denying it. I'm not too worried about that. As for his defensive, I cannot speak to that as I have not seen him play or read anything about that yet.
Patterson is 1/2 inch shorter and 8 lbs lighter than Blake Griffin was when he was drafted. He has virtually the same vertical, maximum jumping reach, etc.
That is my point, with chuck laying center teams were having a layup drill against us. I think pp is a pretty good player, but is he better than scola? no hill? maybe. Unless he plays 5 I don't see where he will get the minutes.
I agree, for the team's needs, he is undersized and redundant. We have several players that fit this profile. We needed a center; there were no really good center prospects left on the board at 14? The surprising thing, they would have picked this guy at 6?
We dont need two big, it's not about just throwing out there height to match them. Yes, it would be best to have at least one legit center in there, but at PF i think we can get away with a strong big, Gasol is tall, but not strong. i wouldnt call what he has a small frame
I can't imagine Hayes, Hill, Scola, Patterson will play on the same team? I know Morey will make trade soon.
''Patrick is a quality defender. He's probably a better team defender right now. I think most young guys coming in the league are going to be that way. We see him as a guy that's going to add a little diversity to the things we can do defensively. This year, he's shown he can play out on the floor a little bit. I think that helps our defense tremendously. Translation: Has good defensive tools, but will likely struggle with his individual defense (like most rookies) in the early going. They say he has a high basketball IQ and he's a great locker room guy, so I think in time he can become a very good defender for us.
It's also arguable that the pool of centers that we could've chosen from in the draft instead of choosing Patterson are not legit 5's, or at least are not worth picking at 14. Maybe we can still get a center(maybe some of those centers we could've chosen won't get drafted and we can invite them to our summer camp), but just not with the 14th pick. It's also possible that Patterson's skill level/character is deemed greater than any other front court players we could've chosen at our spot in the draft.
I can watch game tape and see griffin is way more athletic. When brandon roy came out i think he had a 40 inch vertical
From scouting reports, it seems he's a good post defender, so there's no reason to think he can't guard bigger players. Besides, people forget that matchup problems exist both ways. Patterson has amazing range. He can be a nightmare matchup by drawing bigger players out to the perimeter, while punishing smaller defenders down low. That versatility is what makes me buy into this pick. The guy may not wow you in any particular aspect, but he definitely comes with the complete package.
