Whiteside doesn't scream superstar. He will probably be out of the league after his rookie contract. At best, he is a 2nd string C.
The fact that Morey had this guy rated #6 overall and was actually considering trading up to #9 just to get him is enough for me to be very satisfied with this selection. Also, just note that Morey has publicly stated that he had Jordan Hill rated in the "10 to 20" range last year, according to his post-trade press conference in February. I take that to mean that he likely had Hill pegged somewhere around #17 or #18. That's probably only a few spots higher than he had Jermaine Taylor. Patterson pegged at #6. Hill likely pegged somewhere around #17. I'm guessing that Morey likes Patterson over Hill as a prospect. Who cares that Patterson is a PF. The roster has been officially improved.
While they each have tremendous upside, I just think that having BOTH Demarcus Cousins AND Hasan Whiteside on the same team is going to be disastrous for Sacramento. You can get by with having one knucklehead on your roster. But once you have two knuckleheads, they may hang out together and get into trouble. Good luck with that, Geoff Petrie and Paul Westphal!
Good points. Also Hill could transition as a 5 now that we have another PF, he certainly has adequate size for it. I guess that's something most people don't realize.
Part of me beleives that the Rockets are hyping Pat up to make him part of a sign and trade.. In any case if he is to stay, I like the pick.
I'm glad the Rockets didn't trade this lottery pick for an overhyped, overrated, and overpaid role player that is supposed to help the team "win now."
We drafted ANOTHER PG? What the hell are we going to do with ANOTHER point guard? We already have: Steve Francis Rafer Alston Bobby Jackson Aaron Brooks Please tell me he is going to be traded. This is what a lot of this negative criticism reminds me of. Not going to comment on whether I was part of it at the time but at this point we should have undoubtedly learned : Trust in Morey.
Love this pick, mostly for the flexibility that it gives us. Now, Morey can pull the trigger on a deal for a huge star without having to hesitate (with depth concerns and what not). Patterson can step into the backup 4 right now (although Jordan is starting to develop) and probably average 8-10 and 5-7 (in around 22-25 minutes a game. Just a solid, solid pick.
Did anyone watch David Aldridge's comment about PP playing a 3 instead of a 4 - I mean, for real?? I don't know what he's on, but PP isn't a 3 - he's a definite 4. Aldridge might as well say Chuckwagon is a 3 because he's only 6'6"-ish.
@Delish: I completely agree. VERY similar deal to Aaron Brooks. We were still the same borderline playoff contender team that we probably are right now, not in rebuilding mode where we have to draft for need. You take the best value player. Worry about fitting him in later. No reason to draft to fill in 15 minutes at backup C or backup wing when that can be just as easy to trade for. And I know people are going to say "but its hard to find quality bigs in the NBA", but at the same time it's just as hard to find them in the draft. They are valued higher than their talent and bust more often than other positions at the same draft pick.
I guess Im not getting that excited about patterson, because Im hoping he's just a piece to a devious plan DM has up his fat little kid lookin sleeves
I think this is where most of the draft analysis of PP could be wrong. While nearly everyone agrees he is NBA ready, they also say he has limited upside. But the guy developed a college 3 out of nowhere in the last year. And had to play a more limited role due to the number of stars at KU. But if you look at his stats, his minutes played didn't drop despite both Cousins & Orton being able to play PF/C.

Why say "10 to 20" when you can say "10 to 15", especially when you just traded for the guy? Sure, he could have been ranked, say, #11 on Morey's board. But I doubt it.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't really matter either way. Morey pegs player down a notch if he doesn't have extensive info on the guy. And Jordan Hill (A) did not work out for the Rockets given that the Rockets had no 1st rounders and (B) did not accomplish enough in college for the Rockets to get a good grip on. So any of this 10-20 thing is pure speculation, because the Rockets weren't going to get him unless he dropped to the 2nd round anyway.
