Anyone listened to him on 610?

He seems like a Carl Landry type of player, very nice and unselfish, wanting to gel with teammates and adapting to NBA. Like what I'm hearing from this guy hope he'll be successful.

By seeing his highlight videos, I'm beginning to think more and more that he was drafted to be a hustle guy; a part, never a focal point, especially on offense. What do you think about that analysis?

I like the pick. Clearly he was the BPA (although Babbitt was another good option).

I am a little surprised that he was "top 6" on their draft board. Top 9-10, I could understand. But this means they probably had him ahead of either Greg Monroe or Wesley Johnson. Hmmm.

Let me be clear: Patrick Patterson is a better player than Jordan Hill.

All those lamenting the pick, I can almost guarantee you that you will come around. Dude is a better version of Carl Landry and will quickly become a fan favorite, I believe. Maybe not quite as big as Landry, but he'll be loved.

Yeah. Plus, I think I heard somewhere that he has a 7'3" wingspan.

There are some athletic similarities between Patterson and Landry, but they're somewhat different types of players. I watched a lot of UK basketball this year, and the first thing I think of when I see Patterson is defense. He's very heady - not quite Battier, but in that same vein. He's obviously a good man defender in the post, but overall, he's an excellent leader and very good team defender. Very different from Landry, who mentally just wasn't sharp on the defensive side of the ball and was a liability late in games.

The flip side - despite the measurements, Patterson doesn't get up and finish in traffic quite as quickly as Landry. (Carl was just superb in that regard). He also probably has a little weight room work to do to play the post at the NBA level, and you hope that doesn't compromise some of his speed.

Right now, I see Patterson's value as a Jared Jeffries' type of defender and offensively, a guy who will move without the ball and reliably knock down the 16-footer off the pick and pop. He'll be good in transition, too. But I don't see him as a pure Landry, in the go-to scorer off the bench sense - he won't be quite to that level, imo, in creating his own offense. Maybe in time, but immediately, you guys need to think great defense and floor spacing with his outside shot.

    Overall, love the pick.

What do you think he does better than Hill offensively and defensively? And do you think he's better now and has higher potential?

I asked this to Jason Friedman:
Why are they looking to acquire more guys if we already have an overloaded roster?

    This was his answer:
Because the Rockets want as much talent as possible. If a guy comes in and shows something in summer league or camp then suddenly you have another asset either for your team or trade bait

Plus, there's always the opportunity to stash prospects overseas.

    ----

Looks like they might be targeting an overseas player ;) You don't send Americans overseas...you send them to the D League

What does he do to make him better than Jordan Hill?

I'd say that's a fairly good comparison, except Patterson is a touch more perimeter-oriented. (Haslem was primarily a big in college and developed much of his perimeter touch in the NBA, whereas Patterson was a little more of a hybrid.)

    I'm a little slow I guess.

But normally, lottery guys are not meant to simply be hustle guys. They should have a greater impact. It's amazing how different the NBA draft is from the NFL draft.

You can't compare the two yet because one has had a taste of the NBA and the other hasn't. In terms of bball IQ though he's ahead of Hill, and IMHO he'll be a better team defender than Hill. Hill has the length to be a good Defender but he doesn't have PP's heady play. As far as potential goes, PP is extremely athletic and with his intangibles he can work on his offense this season. Combine that with his already excellent rebounding and defense and we have a steal at the 14th spot. If only Dm didn't get the "iso" regarding 2nd round picks we'd have one of the better drafts in recent memory.

Thanks. Draftexpress does not speak that well about his defense, I think...

so little more consistent and smoother then Landry but less explosive athleticism. that seems to me what I'm gathering

He can play defense? Means he can immediately help us next year right? Him and Jordan Hill could probably get alot of backup minuets behind Scola and Yao. That alot of big guys to throw out there now. You have Hill 6'10, Patterson 6'9, Scola6'9, Yao 7'6, and all above 235 and higher in body weight. Thats alot of leaning on people and rebounds for the team perhaps? Alot of defense and wearing down other bigs. Chuck Hayes comes in for spot defensive ocassions and that sounds pretty good. Of course this might not be the final team I think Morey definately makes a move now with either Hill or Patterson as part of a package.

Very solid comparison. I have been trying to compare him to someone and Udonis fits the bill. Probably a little more polished on offense than Haslem and maybe not as good defensively at this point. Also, a better athlete but that is the best comparison I have heard. Hopefully he will continue to add to his frame and gain explosiveness like Landry did when coming into the league and develop into an even better player than Haslem.
