    The power still lies in the hands of the electors if they change their mind about something and decide to not cast the vote for the person that their segment voted for.

    anyway it was just an interesting thought that ran into my mind while reading about the civil war in Gaza

    Yeah that's one of the features of representative democracy and one of the much studied conflicts in political science/philosophy insofar as the degree to which representatives must obey their constituents by balancing it against their conscience.

    However a representative democracy is still a far, far different beast than an autocracy.

    And yet it is because of the electoral college that we ended up with idiot Bush - a guy who blundered his way through a presidency that will likely be remembered as the most arrogant and yet incompetent ever.

    Gotta love irony.

    the point is, that despite my agreement with you on the statement that the people are always ready for open elections, not everyone agrees with that view, including those who built the framework of our democracy.
