Personally, I have no problem with this. Don't want to get tased? Easy solution: don't break the law. Once you set foot on that field, you're trespassing. You've knowingly entered into someone else's property without their permission. As far as I'm concerned, you've forfeited any right to complain about how they remove you.
Turns out the kid was just trying to deliver a letter. I feel bad now. I like how everyone against the taser thinks: a. The kid is not dangerous b. The officer is out of shape c. It's easy to tackle someone running d. Tackling is safer than tasing Maybe the police department should just hire Usain Bolt to capture suspects. Or maybe an NFL safety would be better. Those guys are fast and have the strength to break somebody in half!
I think the tasering was justified. The kid might have been trying to detonate a dirty bomb hidden in his hat. When he dove to the ground like that- it is a tell tale sign you are about to do something very bad.
Another Philly fan ran out on the field tonight. They was talking about it on the radio this tme the guy tweeted he was going to do it.
Would they tasered his ass if he was running butt naked? Seems to me the fat ass cop/security couldn't stand being embarrassed so he used the taser. I have a friend who work as a cop and I'm told it's up to them to stay in shape.
A little late to this thread - I am not someone who really cares for cops but it is apparent to me that tasers and their use is one of those hotbutton topics. As others have pointed out, tackling the kid could have probably hurt this kid more than tasering him. Is the cop out of shape? We really don't know but I love how everyone against the use of the taser has come to that conclusion. I weigh 215 which is 65 pounds more than what I weighed when I got out of college. Looking at me now, very few people would call me a fattie but there is no way I could have caught that kid. Hell, I couldn't have caught him if I weighed 150 (well I might have but it would still have been pretty tough). So for those who were against the tasering, what else would you have wanted done in that situation? Wait for 20 minutes or so for the kid to get tired and collapse on the field? Him acting like a gigantic douche by running out there was causing an unnecessary delay and pissing off the players, umpires, and fans. Waiting for him to get tired was NOT an option here. There's a reason why television broadcasts will not show idiots running out on the field - to discourage others from doing it to get attention. People didn't come to the park and pay money to see some stupid punk run out on a field. And like others have said, yea he looked harmless but that's after the fact. Too many times, fans have run out and weren't harmless (guy stabbing Seles, the guy that attacked Spiers, the thugs that attacked the Royals 1B coach, etc.) - you can't take that risk that nothing bad is going to happen. It sends a message for idiots not to try this although it happened again LAST night, but no use of a taser was involved as the new idiot gave himself up (from pictures of this guy, he *seemed* to be a fattie so maybe he got winded after running for a minute or so) but then that happened in Philadelphia. Normal stuff doesn't happen in that city, LOL.
Phillies change rules for aprehending people running on the field. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/phillies-revise-security-policy-after-taser-incident-050510 Phils revise policy after Taser incident PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies say team security will now apprehend most fans who jump on the field during games and then hand the unruly fans over to police to face charges. The team announced the revised policy Wednesday, two days after a Philadelphia police officer Tasered a teenage fan who ran onto the field at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies say they made the decision after discussions with the police department. The team says in a statement that Phillies security personnel will apprehend most field jumpers, but will call for the assistance of police officers at the park if greater force is necessary.
Tasering is more dangerous than you might have been led to believe. There is a real possibility of cardiac arrest, depending on your medical situation. Even common sense dictates sending thousands of volts through a victim's body should not be done lightly This is no reason to taser anyone. That a good segment of the population thinks it is is scary. When tasers first became popular, it was sold as a safer alternative to having to shoot someone. Nothing the kid did warranted being shot in the first place... so why the taser?
You know I have heard people say that but I have seen little evidence or the evidence that I have seen (which has been little) is pretty underwhelming in supporting your view. There is also a real possibility that you can die when you get behind the wheel of an automobile, too just like tackling someone who depending on their medical situation could cause that person to have cardiac arrest at the worst or in the very least, a separated shoulder, broken bones, or what have you. He was being a nuisance. As I said earlier, no one came to the game to see him run on the field like a d-bag. Also, as I said above, there is a reason why television broadcasts will not show people doing that - to discourage others from doing it as they think that is a surefire way to get on TV. Tasering him was probably the most extreme thing that could have been done in that situation but if they don't taser him, then how are they going to get him off the field? Wait for him to get tired? And how long would that had taken? You do realize that the next night in the Phillies game, another idiot got out on the field and disrupted the game. Granted, he gave himself up pretty quickly but his disruption ruined the flow of the game for the Phillies and their pitcher, Cole Hamels. He had been pitching brilliantly in a tense 1-0 game but after that unnecessary incident, he gave up a couple of hits in a row which led to the game being tied and having to go in extra innings. Fortunately, the Phillies won in extras but the point is that never even had to happen. Sports, whether it is baseball, basketball, football, soccer, or anything else all have momentum in them. Some people will tell you that is not true, but when you have an athlete who is in a groove and that groove is interrrupted, it can make a big difference in the outcome. And obviously if this had been some 70 year old grandma or Morganna the kissing bandit, then tasering one of them would have been completely inappropriate. Yet something tells me that the cop, no matter how fat he is, would have been able to capture granny or Morganna without having to use his taser. I know that many people here like to crap on cops whenever they can because well, that is just what they like to do but let's give the guy a break - he recognized that this was someone who would be hard to catch and using a taser would be the most effective way to stop him. If his thought process was the same on Morganna, for example, then there exists a real problem there.
Considering the safety/health risks tasers should be a last resort. You really think there was no way to get the kid off the field other than tasering him or waiting for him to get tired? If that was the case then ever big time college program should start scouting that kid because apparently he is impossible to take down.
Tasering is an effective way to make someone who is ordered to stop and refuses to stop, to actually stop. I am less likely to run around and act a fool if the threat of tasering is to be employed. I pay hard earned money to see events and if I wanted to see monkeys, I'd go to the zoo or D&D forum..My time is valuable. I don't want to see people get tased, but if that is what it takes to stop them. then shoot them up. We don't know this kids' intentions...He might have been willing to attack a player. We don't know. Stop the situation. Get him under control. Fear will keep the populace in line. Fear of the battle taser. I suggest we use it.
