Most basketball players are weak. With the exception of Shaq and Karl Malone, most can barley bench-press their own weight. You will rarely see one squat or deadlift either, which is where you get your true strength. If I was forced to have a street fight with a professional athlete, I would pick a golfer first and a basketball player second.

I saw Hakeem Olajuwon squat once. He maxed out with 4 plates. 4 plates is equivalent to 225lbs. For a football player and a power lifter 225 is their second warm-up set. While a 225lbs squat doesn’t seem like much weight for a strong athlete, its impressive for a 6’11” basketball player.

Yeah, remember the Mourning/Johnson dustup. That was the most pathetic fight in the history of sports.

225 isnt even that much for squats that's what i start with when i work out

I play football for Friendswood and I'm not even that strong compared to others...one of my fellow o-linemen starts off with 315

In terms of leverage or whatever.

    smaller, shorter, squatter individuals
always do better that taller people.

Perhaps they have less distance to move the weights?

You are kind of right. I see your point, and his head should be on the bench, but look at that bench. Then look at Ming! He's just to freaking tall. If his head was on the bench, his ass would be hanging off the other end.

i dont know about that. do you have any sources on that are you just taking a guess? just because you are not tone doesnt mean you are weak...stevie looked like he can bench his own weight., kmart is freaking huge, and vince carter is pretty big as well. look at dfish, that guy is so bulky and ben wallace? comon the list goes on and on with huge nba players. if i had to fight a pro athlete i think i would like to fight a soccer player, they dont look that big to me...

fisrt off for the same reasons texas stoke said, i hope yao never lifts as much as falzone who is a freaking professional trainer. secondly most basketball players are FAR from weak. i'm not going to claim to know how much hakeem squated or lifted or whatever but just watching him it's pretty clear he was powerful as ****.

Strenght in weight lighting doesnt always mean anything. It's how you use it. We are not talking aboout football here. Maybe Larry Bird will ring a bell.

Another thing is that i'm getting tired of people not using their common sense. Tall and long person is obviously have weaker body structure then a small and compact person. Yao isn't a weakling. Compare him to any other 7 6 and i bet you he;s probably the strongest guy over 7 5 in the world.

That might not be saying much but try having Yao body type and see what its like.

actually, i read that when shaq came into the league, he had trouble benching 120. On the otherhand, I read that the only two guys in the league who can bench over 400 (or maybe 500?) were earl boykins and kevin willis.

Exactly! Most of the great powerlifters are around 5’ 8”. Fred Hatfield, who was once squatted 1014lbs, was 5’6”. In fact, Hakeem once trained with Hatfield back in the 80’s. There is a nice picture of Hakeem in one of Hatfields books. Hatfields is posing in the squat position with 145lbs on his back. He looks very awkward in the picture because of his long legs and long arms. I think the book was called “Power : A Scientific Approach”.

I'm no power lifter but I do weights regularly and I can tell you that the way he has his wrists cocked back the way they are with his hands at 90 degrees back is a cause for injury! That's a sign that his forearms are weak!!

I ment to say Hakeem is posing in the squat position with 145lbs on his back. Not Hatfield.

It's not that his forearms are weak, he just doesn't have his hands positioned properly. However, his hands may be too big to grip the DBs correctly.

Maybe so...Or maybe the snapshot happened to show his hands at that position at that moment, but his forearms are weak, there's no doubt about that, you can that plainly on TV.
