If its about turning it into a big discussion, other young adventurers (committed suicide 2 years ago) (I noticed most of these people are from California, if that means anything)
That's not always true. Thousands of teenagers die each year in car accidents, drug overdose, homicide ... The rest of you may live to adulthood but if you don't do anything special, what is the point?
I mean . . they allowed their kids to experiment with Drugs and Guns Cause shooting guns and doing drugs. . that is so SPECIAL too Rocket River
I think a better option would be to constrain and criticize every decision they make, and crush their ambition and independence at the most critical point in their personal development.
I've had plenty of adventures and have survived to bore my aquaintances with the stories. I also have a good memory of what I was like at 16. This child does not possess the maturity to understand the incredible danger she placed herself in, with the avid help of her parents. Countless grown, grizzled, and highly experienced sailors have perished in those waters. Men with decades of experience. I would never call the kid stupid. Clearly, she's very intelligent and brave, but she should never have been encouraged to make this attempt. Her parents should be made to pay a heavy price for urging her to do it. Sadly, the Aussie government won't be sending them a bill. Unsurprisingly (I have great admiration for Australians), when asked if they would, what did they reply? "That's the way the system runs," search coordinator Kinley said. "It's our obligation to do this." http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gHjXcYeUuFF-2s5nbXWGWMoG0OiAD9G9C6700
Comparing drugs and guns to sailing around the world was stupid the 1st go round, why must you repeat it?
You had plenty of adventures and your acquaintance were bored with the stories? Must be some adventures!
Are you joking? We've become a nation of precious little snowflakes, and this girl is just the latest example of our me me me, now now now, me me me, now now now culture. .
I'm glad the girl is okay. (Though she kinda deserved it) Her parents should be sued. (On what grounds, though?) The bill for the rescue should, at least partly, go to the parents/sponsors. (It probably won't) Now that she didn't die, next time there could be a 15-year old and then 14, 13.. etc. And some of them are going to die and some of the same people who are cheering for this girl are going to do a 180 and blame the parents/society/whatever they want to blame.
Basically! Hindsight 20/20 folx If it is successful . . we shower them with glory If not . .then we want to point blame The same blame in failure is the same blame in success IMO IF we had not made a big deal about the other kids that did it .. . would this kid have tried? Rocket River
A trivial, recreational, and very risky activity. How about letting 16 yr olds go sky diving by themselves?
How is the comparison stupid? It's risky behavior that the kids are involved in, likely without understanding the full implications.
Alright guys. Its time to go buy a gun and shoot ourselves, because we will never sail a boat around the world alone. There is no reason for living. Our lives are unimportant, and the world will only become a better place without us. We must all thank rage for letting us now how pathetic our uninspired lives are. I'm sure our families won't miss us. I figure you must live a sad life. Feeling the need to do sail around the world alone as a teenager to feel special, to feel like you matter. I think the vast majority of us realize how special we are. We don't need our 15 minutes of fame.
They tend to bore people if their not interested in everything you are. If my friend sails around the world, I don't need to hear any of the details. It doesn't interest me.
lol so basically the rest of us are a bunch of losers who won't amount to anything because we don't want to sail around the world by ourselves? and to top it off, parents are ruining their kids because we're not letting them "grow".
