I knew this thread was coming.

I liked James the first time he was here. He was a tremendous spark off the bench. The problem in my eyes is that he doesn't bring anything else to the table when he isn't making his shots. I think Steve and Rafer can do other things that make them valuable on the court if they aren't making shots. I think if we were to comprise a list of PG skills, Rafer would actually win more categories than MJ with shooting(ordinarily but not so far this year)being the main thing going in favor of James.

If James played the way he played for us that first year down the stretch then we would be 15-1 right now. He isn't playing well, mainly because his shooting is OFF. Once he finds his shot, it will be all good.

Props to Steve for stepping it up tonight, he played with heart and I loved it. I hope it doesn't go to his head. He still has a ton of work to do to earn more minutes on this basketball team. James is still ahead of him in my book.

And according to Clyde, Rafer is a consummate professional.

Agreed. Adelman can go with the hot hand. But we know Adelman's history and, eventually, the rotation will be locked and it's looking like MJ will be the 1/2 of our 8 1/2 man rotation very soon.

You're right, I did misunderstand you. Well the JVG era has passed already (although there are some that have yet to let go) and I'm sorta glad that we have an overcrowding at the guard position because we can always insert the hot hand if the need should arise. The more options we have the better, right?

Finally, something we can all agree upon!

And still believe the same. You'd still need a backup ideally, but last year's Rockets are better with Mike James playing those minutes than Rafer Alston, in my opinion. Mercy, especially in that Jazz series. At a minimum, they should have traded for James.

Now, if Mike James uncharacteristically shot 36%, then I'd be wrong. I don't believe Mike James has this mystical winning presence that doesn't show up in the box score... you know, the kind you guys think Rafer Alston has where apparently you can brick 7 of 10 shots on a nightly basis and still be an irreplaceable component of a 52-win team.

now that one did crack me up! nice!

I agree that during the Jazz series Mike James would have been a better player to have in there for the majority of the minutes due to defensive matchup problems. That's also why he didn't play much tonight as we didn't have a matchup where strength defensively at that position was better than speed.

Playing him 43 minutes a game in that series though? I just don't see enough of a difference to pick one over the other for the long haul. Especially at the sacrifice of getting the ball to T-mac or Yao early and consistently.

Regardless of the outcome there is no way he lasts playing those kind of minutes during a championship run. If we aren't going to have all-star talent at that position then we have to go for depth. Nice suprise with Francis tonight though. Certainly throws a wrench into the works.

Tomorrow should be Mike James time so I had to get the thread in while I could eh?

    Cheers,
    Brock

Unfortunately MJ is buried deep in this team, having so many people who can score. Anything's better than Rafer though. God love him, I'm not hopping on the bandwagon at ANY point this season...funny how a great gave from Steve lit a fire under his bricking ass.

If MJ is burried deep on the team Franchise must have been halfway to China. He made a case for getting his minutes. That competition is good for the team considering how many point guards we have laying around.

If anything is better than Rafer don't you think he would have played the least amount of minutes at that position tonight?

There's a bandwagon? Is that the one that takes Rafer out back and beats the crap out of him?

Go Stevie, Go! Make me a believer!

For that matter - kick some ass James! Make me look like more of a fool than I actually am!

    Best Regards,

    Brock

No way, james can't do anything well if he's shots are off. Francis can penetrate and dish. He's also got the heart and passion and will to do anything to win.

I get a feeling some of you guys actually like it and cheer for a particular Rocket to fail, just because you don't like the guy.

Nobody (not even Clutch) despises Reefer more then I do, but if the dude starts playing better I will be happy as hell.

Precisely - I didn't go starting any Rafer threads while his performance slipped into the sh-tter up until three games ago. It had been said. I guess Brock has too much stuff he needs to get off his chest.

James hasn't shot as well as we needed him to after the first two games (without which we would not have won], and that's disappointing. Then again - he's doing what Rafer did all last season and which merited him playing 40 minutes a game and had guys like Brock swear their allegiance to him forever.

I particularly like the comment that not only has he underperformed this year, but if we had him two seasons ago it still wouldn't matter. There's no point in even discussing something that silly.

I'm glad Rafer has finally found some offense this season - it was desperately needed. Hopefully James will come out of his funk a bit as well. He hasn't played huge minutes lately but he hasn't been quite as bad as he was a few weeks ago.

What we're seeing from Mike James right now is exactly why Toronto Fans were exasperated with him while he was there having a career year and fans over here were daily gnashing their teeth over what they thought was one of the worst trades in the history of the Rocket franchise.

I love Mike James as a fearless competitor and a good shooter (when he's not in a terrible shooting slump like he is right now) ... but it is true that he sometimes has that Starbury effect where he can be a good individual player and not help his team to win. Those deficiencies become exaggerated when the shot isn't going down and all of a sudden fans realize he doesn't pass the ball on pick-and-rolls, he doesn't drive and create, and his +/- is horrible.

That said, I believe Mike James is still a huge asset to this team -- he just needs to get his shot back. Be able to come off the bench and give some scoring spark. But I don't see him getting extended minutes anymore, and although it is early, the way things are developing ... it looks like the majority of point minutes are going to be shared between Alston and Francis.
