I agree. We could have had Kareem, Hakeem and Bill Russel teach Yao at the same time and it wouldn't mean a thing if Yao didn't put forth the effort.
one dimensional personnel? isnt that what they still have? But at least JVG had an excuse of a crappy bench, which isnt the case this year. You answered your own question, one dimensional personnel leads to 1st round exists. Especially when you consider the rockets routinely played DAMN good teams. An important aspect many seem to forget. It's not like they were losing to underdogs
The aspect which you didn't comprehend was that he was blaming the 'one dimensional personnel' on Gundy. And he is right. You are right that one dimensional personnel leads to 1st round exits. Which is why he is not here anymore. If someone like Rudy T., who had been with the franchise for decades and had won 2 championships, was let go when he was not producing results, you can bet that another guy who had failed to get out of first round in 4 years would get canned too.
yes, "he" won 2 championships...well Dream gave him 2. 9 years of sucky basketball and cancer. also, isnt it the GMs job to get talent? You seem to forget how seriously talent depleted the rockets were due to years of below average drafts
Bingo! I love it when all the JVG haters point to the fact that he never advanced out of the first round, but they fail to see how cap strapped and talented depleted the Rockets were when he arrived. If you dont have the talent, it doesnt matter if you have a great coach or not. Has Phil Jackson advanced past the first round after they traded Shaq? Did the Knicks win with Larry Brown? Hell, are the Rockets doing great with RA?
True, but I do wonder what he could have done with this roster. Or even a healthy, willing Bonzi last year against Utah.
They had some talent, they just didn't have the right mix. He would not have had this roster. Bonzi would not have come back Francis would not have signed Brooks would not have been drafted Scola would not be playing Etc..etc..etc... DD
Using that criteria, no coach ever, in the history of basketball, has won any championships. Way to go! 9 years of sucky basketball and cancer eh? How many of those included advancement past the first round? I would say more than Gundy's 0 while coaching Rockets...atleast. Rudy T.'s success in Houston = "sucky basketball and cancer." Gundy's 4 years of failure = beautiful, serene, high flying basketball?? If you think Gundy had no say in player moves, you are in lala land. No other time in Rocket's history were as many broken down Knicks player brought in as in Gundy's reign here. Don't make me summon Team Gundy again. Just as the Knicks were post Gundy era? Oh wait, he gave away most of them. And, Just as the Rockets are now post Gundy era?
someone post what zboy says...he's on ignore to me oh wait....let me guess: "jvg made all the decisionswhile he was here. He was the only problem and he caused all the problems. In fact he is the problem to this years team too. And he caused global warming" ok...back to ignore
Why do you think JVG signed all those old Knick players? You think it had something to do with the Rockets being cap strapped and depleted of talent? Im sure JVG was going to waive his magic wand and get some idiot GM to take Mo Taylor and Noochie while giving him either cap space or talented players in return. He signed those old players because he didnt have the coin to go spend. DUH!
Truth hurts. I don't blame ya. You should keep me on ignore, though. It will save me time from responding to your man-love Gundy rebuttals.
Bottom line is we were a better team when JVG left than when he came. Sure JVG had influence on the roster moves, but influence only goes so far when you only have MLE's to spend and limited talent to trade. The only really big move he had influence on was the TMac trade. Not every free agent pick up was a good one, but it isn't like there were clearly better players available that we could afford. The Battier vs Gay thing is debatable, but considering JVG was fired for not making it past the first round, it's hard to blame him for trying to win now.
Bonzi, Francis, Scola and Brooks are such great contributors for a winning program. It would have been a shame if they were absent from this team.
i'd say scola certainly would be if we got him more touches. freaking juwan howard got more post-up opportunities last season. either way, of the players he mentioned, the only player that definitely wouldn't be here is bonzi. the coach had no impact on the pick-ups of both scola and francis.
yeah, I dont see why scola wouldnt get minutes. If you produce you play...DD forgets that he is talking about a coach who started chuck hayes Bonzi...who knows. Again, we don't know if he would have come back but bonzi v. JVG, i think, had more to do with bonzi's personal issues than people typically think Francis. Again, who knows. JVG always praised francis and i think had a lot of respect for him as a competitor. Brooks...again, thats a complete toss up. And its not even known if he can/will be a legit NBA player.
Still early in the season to be giving up on this team or players...don't ya think? Yes, as is the speculating about him coaching this year's team....waste of time. JVG failed, move on. DD
