I agree, for a situation like this where the gunmen are intent on gunning Landry down knowing that he's unarmed, he'd want to have that extra security a gun would provide. More generally, are attackers more likely to fire on someone who they know are unarmed? I'm not sure about that, but I'm no expert. It seems to me that if a person has a gun and he's being threatened by a criminal (for instance, they're trying to rob him), the safest thing for him to do is just do what they tell him or maybe run away. But if he has a gun, he may feel compelled show it and try to scare the criminal off. And then what happens? Maybe the criminal, feeling threatened, runs away, and it works great. Or, maybe the criminal decides he needs to shoot before he gets shot. And now, the danger has actually escalated.
Russia is #5 on this list, but I think ppl in this country do not have a right to own a gun, so it seems that there is no a direct link between the guns and criminal rate.
i like how whenever something turn out ok, people are thanking god but when something terrible happens, no one ever curses him?
no doubt the outcome of these situations are unpredictable. However, if you were being threatened at gunpoint and had a way to retreat to cover say behind a car, building what not, a criminal would think twice since the playing field has significantly leveled by way of your buffer. Otherwise, if confronted in the open, it's foolish to draw your weapon right then and there. It's best to comply and retreat if possible.
Agreed, my issue is with the folks saying that Carl needs to leave the area in hope of finding a "safer" place to live. The incident was an incredibly unlucky and unlikely thing to happend no matter what side of town you are on.
There are three big factors that raise the likelihood of high homicide rates (in order of importance): 1) the lack of the rule of law, 2) drug trafficking, and 3) ease of access to firearms. Countries that have the rule of law, small drug trade, and stringent gun laws have relatively few murders: See Japan and New Zealand for classic examples. All of the countries at the top of the list, except for the US have a weak rule of law and some (like Colombia, Mexico) have a weak rule of law, plus drugs, plus easy access to guns, which makes it much worse. Russia has a weak rule of law, which explains why they have a high murder rate. The US has the rule of law, some drug trafficking, but relatively easy access to guns. Hence the high homicide rates, despite the fact that the rule of law (which correlates generally with being a developed country) is strong here. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Back to Rockets talk.
Thanks, it is still Rockets talk because our player was shot by the gun, then we have to talk the gun control, but I do not think this county will do it.
http://www.snopes.com/crime/statistics/ausguns.asp This article debuks most of those emails that are circulated by gun nuts regarding the Australian violent crime rate. While I read of some annecdotal evidence about a rise in violent crime in England due to infiltration of the Russian's Mafia, statistically increases in violent crimes have been marginal and comprable to the increase in population. Handguns have been banned since 1996 and 2005 was the first year that they saw a large spike in violent crimes. So the assertion that the gun ban has caused the spike in crime is dubious at best.
holy shiiiiiiiit!!!! tear almost came outta my eye..that **** is fukin scary...i woulda prolly pissed on myself
Amazing story. So glad he's alright. I love Carl, man ... He's a hard worker, & a really nice guy. You can just tell. Knew that before all of this. Now, not only has he came back to play in the same game after getting a tooth completely knocked out, but he'll be coming back with a bullet scar. Our natural toughman. Deserving of a toughman nickname.
Maybe he outran the shooter because he was an athlete, and the shooter was some pothead with tar-filled lungs. Glad he's okay.
Yeah, I had a friend that was killed by mistaken identity. Its really a trip how people will try to snuff you out for no reason. I have a chl and I pack most places I go. Its also a reason why players carry guns and people don't understand. The old term "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6." That applies to a lot of people. I've seen enough random shootings in my life to know it can happen anytime. I was at Chrystal the night elie got jacked. A couple of weeks earlier, its was a shoot out at the same spot. I was downtown and saw some asian gang members having a shoot out. Its just really crazy how violent people have become.
We sell guns to Columbia, which turn around and sell them to Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, ect. ect.. Might be American made weapons, but America is not selling weapons to Mexican Drug Cartels to fight drug wars as you claimed.
We don't have the right to do as such, it's our own free will. Blaming God for everything is like Blaming Tracy McGrady for your personal issues.
A question no doubt left unanswered as I'm sure media reports left out a little detail like that. Not the post I would have wanted my account to go out on ...
