Dude, I loved me some Otis Thorpe, but he used to get abused by Karl Malone just like everybody else did. :D

Thorpe was one my favorites, but he definitely couldn't shoot threes and he was not a shot blocker.

I'm honestly shocked at how much value people assign to guys like Elie, Horry, Cassell, and Maxwell... I mean come on guys... I liked the championship teams too, but jeez.

Forget threes, he couldn't shoot more than 5 feet from the basket. Majority of his points came off of putbacks and dunks.

Which is why when he made a 10-15 footer from the top of the key against the Suns in Game 7 of Western Conference Finals, with few minutes remaining in the game, I jumped and yelled, "We are gonna win this for sure!!"

Elie -post Rockets - critical role in Spurs championships
Horry -NBA playoff legend, NEVER FAILED TO GET PAST THE FIRST ROUND
Cassell - Stellar career as a starter for the Bucks,Wolves, and Clippers

Maxwell- Without this guy, we wouldn't have this conversation
If Tmac had to face an early 90s Maxwell, he would go directly to Stephen A Smith and say he can't play for the entire season after having 1000 MRIs and doctors tell him he's fine, he'd cry if he saw Maxwell yelling at him

Yes, he could. Check his stats, he just didn't shoot them very often. He was not like todays PFs who just want to shoot threes. He had amazing range for a guy with such huge hands; he did have a nice stroke. He definetly could block shots but most of the times didn't have to because Olajuwon was there to back him up or he was just too strong and guys would pass it out or go around him. Thorpe had a really wide frame and remains the best PF the Rockets ever had and will have.

    Ignorance...

Now why is that, because it's true ?

100% agree :) and also don't forget the kiss of death and the things he did for the Rockets. He was an emotional player and nice spark off the bench when Maxwell wasn't hot.

    ????

Thorpe had huge hands, and yes he palmed the ball, but they were used for full court baseball passes for fastbreaks, not 3s. He was a poor jump shooter. He had bad form on his jumpshot. He would catch the ball at the top of the key and drive past a recovering defense for a thunderous one handed slam. Other times, he would catch the ball off of a pass under the basket and dunk it.

Thorpe was not a good shot blocker. He played positional defense, very similar to how Charles Oakley played.

Otis Thorpe took 64 3's in his 17-or-so-year career he made 3 of them for a whopping 4.7% shooting percentage, which, while a higher percentage than Stevie Wonder's, does not make him a 3-ball shooter. Trivia : he hit all 3 in the 1990-1991 season as a Rocket... he must've gotten hot.

He averaged 0.4 blocks per game.

I remember any jumpshot he took that was beyond 6 or 7 feet looked more like a rocket-propelled grenade.

That's the spirit, come on guys, show some love for Thorpe. He technically could shoot them and probably made a low percentage because most of them were desperation threes. He did have a nice outside touch, especially in the early 90s where he could make them from the top of the key and far out on the baseline.

If he ever had a nice outside touch, it must've been way the hell outside, because it sure wasn't with him in games.

It was the highest percentage shot :) A concept today's Rockets do not seem to grasp that well.
