Maybe I am one of those old people but I just don't understand the appeal of texting when you can talk to someone. Plus my thumbs hurt after texting too much, more than 2 messages in a 5 minute period.

Texting is the worst form of communication ever. I hate getting texts - if you want to talk to me then phone me...if you're rather tap away a hardly legible sentence then don't expect a response.

I'm "one of those old people"

I've never sent a text message from my cell phone. I've received less that 15 text messages - about half of which were spam.

Sometimes it's useful but a lot of times texting is f'ing r****ded. Just call them. Why the f**k are you texting somebody sitting right next to you?

Of course, I don't want to start on why cell phone companies charge so much for something that barely takes up any bandwidth.

    ^my cousin's cell phone
    17yo

14500 isn't really that crazy of a number, I'd wager that the average text-enabled teen can hit 8000-10000 on any given month (incoming and outgoing)

    W-T-F??

seriously i text people at work since its harder to call people at work and a quick message to them via text is easier and isnt as conspicuous at work. if i could i would just email them but not all of them have access to email at work as readily as i do.

i also will mass text during rockets games to send out a novak msg to cf people.

but even then i dont get how people will text that much in a month. i only started doing all this since i got on the 1500 msg plan otherwise i would have stuck to my 50-60 txts a month max

I'm also too old to get it, but at the same time there are even older people who think 'why email when you can call' or 'why IM when you can call' or 'spending time on the internet is ruining human interaction.'

I figure teens run up text messages as it replaces IM for them:
    A - 'hi'
    B - 'how's it going'
    A - 'did u hear?'
    B - 'no'
A - 'he asked me out'
A's dad - 'stop texting at the dinner table'
    A - 'have to go'
    B - 'ttyl'

You could end up w/ a few a minute w/ conversations like this. And I'm sure she's having multiple conversations at the same time.

I'm gonna assume a text convo between teenage girls would go something like:

    1- Hey

    2- Hey

    1- OMG

    2- What

    1- Look at Sally

1- BKA (better known as) Skank

    2- Aight

    1- LOL

    2- She aint cute

1- BITD (back in the day)

    2- Wasn’t cute then either

    1- BM (Byte me)

2- Heard she gave Greg a BJ

    1- BMF (bad mother fu&*#r)

    2- 4 Real

    1- Where

    2- BR (Bathroom)

    1- Ewwwwwww

2- BTDT (Been there done that)

    1- U2 (you too)

    2- Word

    1- Wow

    2- Yep, he sucks

    1- So do you

    2- LOL

    1- LOL

1- So he TTA (tap that a$$)

    2- Naw

    1- TT (big tease)

    1- LOL

2- TRDMC (tears running down my cheeks)

    2- TOS (teacher over shoulder)

    1- BFN (Bye for now)

2- TTYL (talk to you later)

I use very little of my minutes. I'm guessing I use less than 30 minutes a month. Most of my communicating goes through text, though it's no where near even a thousand a month.

As far as the posts about why would someone text someone instead of calling them...you have to consider what's being communicated. For example, if I'm watching the Rockets game and T-Mac hit's a game winner....I can send a text to 20 dudes about it, as opposed to calling all 20 when I really don't want to have convos with them....but do feel like commenting about the game. So apply that logic to any situation where you want to communicate something but not have a full convo.

When was the last time Tmac hit a game winner? Poor choice of example.

    I send about 150-200 a month, around 300-350 incoming.
