Joey Dorsey, 33rd pick of the draft. Was a bust but not a big investment, hard to call 2nd round picks busts though, it's a crapshoot. Translated into helping us get Kevin Martin so a good collection asset by Morey. Hilton Armstrong, 12th overall pick by NO, traded to Kings and then lastly as a throw in filler to the Rockets for Kevin Martin. Definitely a bust but thankfully not one Rockets/Morey were responsible for, a small price to pay for getting Martin. Thabeet, still a possible NBA role player, started to come along. I would look for this guy to play in the future, I don't think he'll be a bust, too early to tell though. However, for a #2 pick he has a long way to go to be considered worthy of being #2 but I think he will pan out, maybe even a starter down the line for some team. Beasley, #2 pick, 2 seasons into his career it's still too early to tell, but so far he hasn't shown anything worthy of being considered #2. I'm starting to lean towards bust or at the least majorly disappointing. This upcoming season will be his make or break year. The fact Miami is trying to trade him doesn't look good for him. He was a beast in college though.
Yeah, but that couple of hours make a world of difference. I mean, it's just so much nicer when you can hear the words "And we have a trade. The Houston Rockets have just traded for the #6 pick. They will draft... Demarcus Cousins from University of Kentucky!"
Yeah, the NBA has some weird "wink-wink" rules, where you're officially not allowed to do something, but everybody knows it's done. I think the league must have been started by dope dealers. That Joe Smith / Minnesota thing is an example of this.
Excuse my ignorance, How does draft day trading work? Do you trade before the pick is made or get the team to select a player for you and trade the players rights? When are the announcements regarding the trade made official?
You can make trades in the same way you can in the NFL. You just can't announce it until it's finalized and goes through the proper procedures. Hence why Carroll Dawson had to get interviewed about what he thought of Rudy Gay, when the Rockets at that time had already shipped him to Memphis. It's just a stupid rule. And one which meant we'll definitely see the Rockets drafting at #14. But won't know whether he'll stay a Rocket or not until later, when the stories start leaking.
We could trade the pick before the draft, and be able to announce it, though teams tend to wait until the last moment to trade picks.
From a distant memory, I thought I have seen the draft take place and them announce the trade straight away. "The Minnesota Timberwolves select George Foreman from the University of Eatery and has been traded to the Houston Rockets" How did it work for Chase, Lleul and JT? Did their teams draft those players and we heard about it later?
A miss is if a player you got performed way worse then expected, so much so that if you had the chance you would pick another guy. Just because you used him as filler doesn't mean he was a miss. Detroit got some assets for Darko Milicic as well, do you mean he wasn't a miss?
No, they probably never should have drafted him to begin with, but yeah, a lot of factors are involved. It is entirely possible that, if Dorsey had stayed here, he might have managed to become a productive player for this team, given the work ethic of teammates and the quality of the coaching. Same holds true for Darko too, frankly. He just got into a bad situation, and has never lived up to the hype - some I read said 'Is he the best prospect EVER?' .. hehehe point being, I just don't think that Dorsey automatically qualifies as a 'miss' like people so casually toss about. I mean honestly, did people hang thier heads in shame thinking about that particular draft pick of Houston picking up Dorsey in the 2nd round? Like it was some Godawful pick? No, not that I ever saw. People had reasonable hopes and expetations for the guy, he got hurt, worked to rehab, and then got traded before we ever really saw if he could do it or not. So maybe there was not a lot between his ears; the Kings didn't seem to want to bother finding out, for whatever reason. We just don't know. In my opinion, for an actual 'miss', we would know. Everybody would know. /shrug... not like it matters anyway.
When trades are completed during the draft, the NBA can announce the trade. Of course, most trades actually take a while to get truly finalized, as teams aren't going to hurry up and finish the paperwork right as the draft is going on, so there's always a delay between the actual pick and announcement of trades. At the end of the draft, that's when you can definitely get all the info on the trades. But during the draft, it really just depends.
meh, it depends on if other salaries are included. If its rookie for rookie, then its a done deal because most of the picks are within the 25% rule especially if they're right next to each other. Foye for Roy is an example. The gay-swift for battier was because they had to wait or check i think with byc rules. Carter for jamison, allen for marbury all went down instantly.
Hey, just a random question, and no need to start a new thread about it.. Where do you guys think Jordan Hill would be in this draft if he were in this year's instead of last year's? I mean, he hardly played last year anyway, so he's probably more of a rookie still than a veteran, so I was wondering where you gurus would rank him compared to, say, this year's crop of lottery picks?
I would guess late lottery. There is an inordinate amount of bigs in this draft. Any one of Uhoh, Whiteside, Alabi, Aldrich and Sanders alongside Hill in the second unit for the rockets would be very nice.
