KLOL was a joke compared to what it was when I was growing up in Houston in the mid-70s. I will never forget Crash, the best DJ in Houston at the time. I got to meet him when I sat next to him on the front row at Little Feat's final concert with Lowell George, at Sam Houston Coliseum on New Years Eve 1978-79. I still have a vinyl copy of Shake Russell/Dana Cooper's "Songs on the Radio", part of which was recorded live at KLOL. A classic Houston album. When they went to a strictly headbanging/heavy metal format in the 80s, they sealed their fate as far as I'm concerned. Nothing against that type of music, but they needed a wee bit more variety.
Radio is dead & you can thank Clear Channel for it. Thank God for Sirius. I swear, Sirius sat radio is the greatest man - no censorship, no commercials, heaven... For anyone who likes hip-hop, Eminem has his own station & show on Sirius - Shade 45 - and the DJ talk on it & the music is insane.
I'm actually going to use a smiley: I cannot friggin' believe this. It's gone. ... I'm in shock. -- droxford
Poor Lock Sebenhousen (sp). His world must have come to an end. Wendy Miller was by far the best of the bunch, I doubt she'll have much trouble finding a job. Hell, look at Bo Corona...he's worked at evrey station in town it seems. Outlaw Dave was stuck in the days of hair bands. I can't see him working at any other station in town.
I always had huge issues with KLOL's playlist... loved some of the "classic" stuff they played like Dio, the Cult, Zep, Floyd, Rush, etc. HATED the newer stuff they decided to play. Godsmack EVERY five minutes. Literally. Creed every 15 minutes. Nickelback. Still playing Bush, Candlebox and Ratt til the day they were taken off the air. Still, despite suffering through the crap, there were a few gems in their ultra-repetitive playlist. I listened to that station in my car since I moved to Houston in 1994. A decade! And it's been around forever! So strange that it would be removed in the middle of the night with no fanfare. How the **** is Locke Stephenhousen going to get a job now?
Correct!! S&P were great, but I liked Boner even more. He was very funny. And Chuck Schramek (RIP) was great too. I loved his world of the weird segement. I used to set my alarm early just to hear it. All those great sound clips. "THAT BABY'S UGLY!!" and "He put his finger in my buttocks"
KTSU is 90.9 FM KPFT is 90.1 FM They are literally right next to each other. Friday afternoons on KTSU is all old-school funk and R&B from the 1970s. Heavy on P-Funk, James Brown, the Spinners, the O'Jays, etc. It's a great way to pull your pecker from your pocket and kick off the weekend stylin'. Saturdays on KPFT begins with Zydeco from 6-9AM, LoneStar Jukebox (Texas based country, rock & blues) from 9AM-noon, and folk/rock singer-songwriter music for the afternoon. Sundays on KPFT is all blues music, from 6AM until 4PM. Required listening in the RMT household. Enjoy!!!
The only thing that is close would be Scottie and Rice Radio Reggae, which comes on KTRU on Wednesdays from 4PM to 7PM. Scottie used to play mostly traditional reggae but has lately started playing dancehall and dub. Very little reggae. Houston really needs a station that will play an all around mix of music. Hawaii used to have a station that was called Radio Free Hawaii that was format free. They would distribute ballots at designated locations and would play whatever music was most popular from the turn-in votes and online votes. You would usually get to hear a big mix of local Hawaiian pop, reggae, a little pop, dance, and some rap. Definitely a neat concept, but apparently it didn't last as RFH is no longer on air.
From Walton and Johnson's website: Waltonandjohnson.com Thursday, November 11, 2004 W&J Seek New Houston Flagship Station. WANTED Houston radio station that needs to have more affluent 25-54 adult listeners than the other stations and has the sales team to take advantage of such bountiful position. Thank God for the Internet ! 17 years ago one of the top rated morning shows in Dallas/Ft Worth disappeared from the air one Friday morning without explanation to a large and mostly befuddled audience. Walton & Johnson recieved a call on the Thursday evening before informing them that KISS 106 would be "The Oasis" in the morning and would be playing New Age music instead of the Walton and Johnson Show. Sadly we headed to HOT 97 in New York City and many people in the Metroplex did not find out what happened to the show or why until years later. Thursday night W&J were informed by lower level management sources via a last minute phone call (class and ethics never go out of style) that there would be no W&J Show tomorrow. In it's place would be Hispanic music programs. Now, 17 years later we can at least use the internet to keep you 10 percenters abreast of the latest developments. Here's what we know now: As of Friday morning 11/11/04 our current flagship station KLOL FM in Houston will become yet another spanish station for Houston and W&J have emphatically not been offered a Clear Channel alternative. You will no doubt hear or read corporate spin as to how the show just did not work out in Houston. Don't you buy it. In the lastest morning ratings W&J were the top ranked (non-ethnic) morning show in Houston in our target 25-54 demographic. We had great trepidation early on about associating the show with CC Radio since they had a well documented history of hiring away successful shows that they could not beat in other markets and then icing them when they thought it safe to do so. But we accepted the risk because the lure of putting our beloved show on the air in our own hometown seemed to outweigh the risk of this type of competition elimination. In this case we think they were confounded by our success in spite of a complete lack of support in marketing, advertising, and PR by CC Radio for the Walton and Johnson Show. Since we have now built a large and loyal listener base that exceeded the performance of the base radio station on a regular basis we do not intend to throw it away and leave Houston. This is our home and we will not be disposed of so easily. Houston listeners keep checking this website and we will let you know where to find us. As for New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Biloxi, College Station, and Lufkin..... Since WRNO FM in New Orleans is also now owned by Clear Channel we will also be off the air briefly in The Big Easy. SInce W&J are always at the top of the ratings and a proven audience mover and money maker, we suspect that other parties will be interested in broadcasting the show. It is too early to determine who...but we will let you know on this website the minute we negotiate that one. We are unsure about Eagle 98.1 in Baton Rouge/Lafayette since they are owned and operated by Guauranty Broadcasting. We are almost always on top there also so it seems very reasonable that Eagle or someone else will want to keep the show on the air in Red Stick...GEAUX TIGERS. Judging from calls and emails the show seemed to be catching on rapidly in Biloxi/Gulfport.... Since our affiliate there is not a Clear Channel station (there are a few left who are not)...we will let you know how that one shakes out...right now without a flagship station the show will be difficult to distribute. But will get back on ASAP on the Mississippi Coast. Since College Station and Lufkin are both Clear Channel owned and operated I suspect we may lose you guys (for awhile at least)...once again judging from the volume of calls and email the show seemed to be getting traction in Aggieland and the Piney Woods..we hope we can get back on there soon because we really enjoyed serving you. Damnit.....I loved listening to their show every morning while driving to class here in College Station....this sucks. I hope this is a hoax of somekind....
I use to listen to 92.1 sometimes and that was replaced with Latin Music. Now 101.1 is gone? Hard to believe. Whats up with all these latin stations on the radio? It seems there are just as many or more latin stations than english stations in Houston. I better learn me some spanish.
KPFT on Saturdays and Sundays is unbelievably awesome. Spare Change is one of the best shows in radio - I swear.
I just can't believe the station is GONE like that... my mom used to talk about listening to it when she was growing up... figured it was one of those things that'd be around forever, a Houston icon of sorts.... God knows if there's anything Houston needs more of it's Latino radio stations... (Not saying the music is bad it just seems every other frequency I hit is one...) And as a Proud 10%'er here's hoping Walton and Johnson find their way back onto the airwaves quickly! Hmm... "10,101 Songs in a row!" Does seem kinda... out there....
so we have 93.7 and..... oh well i only really listen to cd's and 610 AM so it's not that big a deal but it's weird having no rock station. that's not right at all.
