Depends on the perspective. Honestly, it is such a ridiculously subjective concept that for anyone to make any dogmatic statement about it just appears utterly ignorant to me. Just one more reason the real "embarrassment" to the city of Houston is the Chronicle sports section.

    But I digress.

Any Saturday and Sunday afternoon when it's not raining or 30 degrees (twice a year), hit the parks in our great city, and what do you see: people playing sports. Futbol, football, softball, baseball, basketball. There's even an amateur rugby league. There are amateur football leagues, amateur futbol leagues, amateur hockey leagues and basketball leagues, leagues for children in every sport imaginable. And 15 or so Friday nights a year, hundreds of outdoor houses of worship fill up to the gills so that Southeast Texans can pay homage to Football. There are websites and hour-long news programs devoted to the exploits of 15- and 16-year old football players and their teams.

Go to the water cooler or the barber shop (or salon, for you younger types) and listen to what people are talking about. The 'Horns, the Aggies, the game on Friday night, what's wrong with McLane, oh look Yao is broke again, etc.

If you don't think Houston is big on sports then you're either in a coma or flat-out stupid. In Solomon's case, I'm not sure which.

As far as what makes "a good sports town", that depends entirely on the individual making the assessment and what he wants. Solomon wants Boston. And Boston can freaking have him.

Is it just me, or did he just manage to repeat about four things one hundred times?

    • Be good at sports.
    • Stop blaming such-and-such player that does not really get that much blame.
    • Stop losing to good teams/players.
    • Take some subjective and idiotic term like "soft" and not be that.

And also, how often does the city of Houston make race an issue, when it comes to sports?

Yep. Redundancy and inaccuracy, two of the hallmarks of drivel.

Yes, thats exactly what I was thinking... if Houston ever wants to be a better sports town, we need to focus more on stopping Monta Ellis and his consistently mediocre Warriors team.

Houston is a good football town - because its in Texas. Texans love football. HS, College, Pro, whatever. Football is Football in Texas. I'd say Houston is a good football town, but NOT a good sports town in general.

I have heard that the Chron is the newspaper with the largest local circulation that has yet to win a Pulitzer. Now that's embarrassing.

Houston fans? Not so much. Houston media? Far too often.

    101. Sit your fat ass down & wait until between innings to go get your frikken food.

    102. Stop reaching over the rails & grabbing fair balls down the 1B/3B line.

    103. Tone down all the dumbass mind-numbing "entertainment" at the game and focus just a bit on, you know, the game.

    104. You can be loud even when the scoreboard *isn't* telling you to.

The fans at MMP are, generally, morons.

Based on what? Based on your subjective experience. Don't you see how narrow that is? The select leagues are HUGE around here. If you don't know what that is, I rest my case.

Houston is a great sports town. What city is better west or down south?

MLB /NBA dont really draw in any city if the team isnt winning. Except maybe NY,Chi,Boston.

Houston is fine. Our teams are average b/c they have average players............

And one more thing: the number of youth involved in baseball leagues and soccer leagues absolutely dwarfs the number of youth playing in football leagues. Not added together, either: each sport has easily twice as many kids playing it alone than football.

Houston's definitely a football town, but it is *anything* but a "football only" town. Wake up hear the crack of the bat. This is a great sports town.

Why is the joke of a writer always taking pot shots at Morey? I seriously despise Solomon. Morey is everything that Solomon wishes he could be. Inteliigent and actually having his opinions matter to a professional sports franchise.

JS- you are a douche. You should move to Miami until basketball season is over. Then why dont you move to New York for baseball season. Then, just front run and pick the NFL team with the best record after the WS and move there

Rice baseball and Fonde basketball, as well as a whole lot of great high school baseball, basketball, and soccer players, say you're wrong.
