Jaco Pastorius? Too Jazzy? Kenny Gradney , I know I keep throwing Little Feat players out there. If there were a top 100 rythmn sections list I would put Gradney and Richie Hayward way up there.
Concur- Alvin Lee ripped up Woodstock (I have to go by the movie cut never saw them live myself) Whoa- you guys know guitar players....
Sheesh, look at some of the names ahead of Verdine White. Geezer Butler? John Paul Jones? Flea? Even Flea would probably laugh if he knew he was rated ahead of White. If the jazz guys aren't included, Verdine is my #1. It's all about The Groove.
Here is Alvin Lee's incredible performance of "I'm Going Home" 11:32 at Woodstock 1969 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHw9b4BBV9Y&search=alvin lee
I bought Verdine White a Coke at a benefit I was bartending. I told him that I was pretty sure I'd played "September" at every party I threw from 1997 until then (2003ish). Another guitarist that nobody (I think Manny talked about him a few times on here) seems to mention is Phil Manzanera. That cat can play. Love his licks.
Oh yeah, you are so right, my man! Phil is so underrated, it isn't even funny. He especially gets some good stuff in on the Roxy Music albums, "For Your Pleasure", "Stranded", and "Country Life". Oh and I hear ya MEOWGI on Bootsy at #46 - ridiculous to have him that low.
I thought I'd post this. Came across the old video from 1970...still great quality. Look for your stoner mom and dads in the crowd. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/W44qPieIzDk"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/W44qPieIzDk" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Most likely '69. I was at that concert. Randy California of Spirit was mentioned earlier... got to see Spirit at the Music Hall with an unknown group opening for them... the Doobie Brothers, who were formed in '69. (that's why I'm pretty sure about the date... my memories from those days range from very, very vivid, to more than a bit hazy, lol!) Got in free with my girlfriend during the little bit of chaos caused by people demonstrating against the ticket increases. The top ticket had gone up to $6 bucks, so folks were parading around in front of the place with signs and chanting slogans. It was great. That long line of glass doors at the front? We just walked up to a couple and tried them. One opened, and in we walked. Went to the center aisle and this cool chick working a gig as an usherette asked for our tickets. When I told her we didn't have any, and had just walked in, she smiled and led us down to about the 3rd row, center, where there were a couple of empty seats. Groovy! The Music Hall was a great place for concerts and probably the best in Houston at that time. And if I mentioned this earlier, forgive me.
I wholeheartedly agree. Saw the Kinks twice there, once with Blondie opening and once with Cheap Trick opening. I also saw Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush there ( ) but I came in on the tail end of the Music Hall's heyday. My brother saw both Bruce Springsteen and Little Feat play there. The sound in the Music Hall was absolutely incredible.
Buddy Holly should really be on there. It is a crime that he is not. Everything he did, he never played an upstroke while strumming.
Here's my nominee: Richard Thompson. Not only the best guitar player alive, but also one of the best songwriters. Enjoy! <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AxKTzwaEa2o"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AxKTzwaEa2o" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Someone who is not on this list but is highly underrated, IMO, was Arthur Lee of Love. I listened to "Forever Changes" yesterday and his guitar playing is so tasteful throughout that album. Also, Roger (formerly Jim) McGuinn of the Byrds needs to be mentioned for his outstanding work on the 12 string.
Howdy BobFinn* I mostly lurk in the Hangout...hell, I mostly lurk period, but I saw the thread title and thought, "let's see what the world is thinking these days" For grins I put on Kooper Sessions as I cruised this thread. I then saw your handle and smiled and wondered if you'd remember. Thanks for acknowledging Shuggie for me. That's pretty cool. RR I also thought my top 10 most resembled yours. MY BUDDHA, the older we get the more we stay the same.
