It's such a masterpiece that I feel like there was at least 3 years production time, making the origin of the song in the teens.
In my opinion the beats, the production, the flows, the deliveries, the lyrics, the everything is worse nowadays and not even in the same ballparks as 2000s rap...much less 90s rap. To me, modern rap music is a joke the same way Nickelback/Creed/Limp Bizkit/Kid Rock turned rock into a joke. The difference is one day the general population woke up and realized it. But with modern rap, this abomination still continues SMH.
I hear you Did you like late-80's and 90's metal groups? Most 70's fans will say f*** that Your comment is funny and true. About 2 years ago, I was patronizing a Buffalo Wild Wings listening to Cold Play playing on the speakers. I Google'd them and genre said "rock band". I was like WTF? So I asked a mid-20s caucasian couple if they considered Cold Play a rock band. They said yeah I guess so, but added the caveat of rock music doesn't exist nowadays. I agreed. Best believe their parents were playing the real stuff when they were younger
Flows are better? Better than KRS One, Nas, JZ etc? Beats are better? Better thn Kanye, EPMD, Pete Rock, DJ premier? I am talking about mainstream, I know there are some rappers who can match these guys but most of it is pretty simple beats and flows.
I would add Timbaland, Mannie Fresh, Dre, Rakim, and Neptunes The greats will always be the greats and ahead of their time In general, East Coast beats never seemed that good to me. The rappers were awesome though People say Illmatic was Nas' best album, but almost every beat was trash to me. Great lyrics and flows though
It's subjective but there are some solid songs in this list, the Runaway short film is the GOAT Hip Hop video imo. If we're throwing underground or indie tracks in the thread I can grab some later. I'll throw some mainstream tracks in that didn't make the list. For those that like Lyrics: For those that like unique beats:
@jiggyfly Rappers prevalent IMO within past 10 years -- I don't listen to most current music (rap music or not) because I don't care like yesteryear -- would be J Cole, Kendrick Lamar (first rapper to win Pulitzer Prize), Drake (he gets dissed alot by current fans(male) and plenty by 90's 00's fans but is overwhelmingly popular), and Travis Scoot. The late-great Nipsey Hussle was more than decent
Actually, I am the same, I don't listen to much new music, the only things I have picked up on are usually in a commercial. I have been checking out Dua Lipa after researching the music from a Taco Bell commercial. I have no issue with Drake.
Props to folks sharing music, you might introduce people to artists they've never heard before. A lot of folks sleep on Oddisee, he's a rapper/producer out of DC. He's got some good instrumentals too, with quality headphones or speakers it's a good vibe when working/driving etc.
One lost art last 20 years is rappers saying the current year within the lyrics Said happened plenty in the 90's Maybe 80's too but I haven't explored 80 like that
Not sure which song you're speaking with Dua Lipa.... but One Kiss has caught my eye/hear several times.... RnB barely exists nowadays The producer is Calvin Harris, he's awesome.... he's been in the game a long time and has plenty hits, some with Neptunes Rihanna, Elie Goulding (white girl with some soul), and plenty others who a can't think of right now have many many hits associated him My personal Mt Rushmore for production (rap/RnB) is 1) Timbaland, 2) Dre, 3) Mannie Fresh, and 4) Neptunes Calvin Harris, Metro Booming, and Mike Will might possibly crack the mountain... they just need more longevity... Calvin Harris has best current argument to enter IMO
