mrpaige, I was also a huge fan of Phil Hartman and I was really disturbed about the way he went. But for some reason, I can't remember where I heard the news or when.
Duh...Tupac is still alive. Me too. I took note of where I was when I heard Lloyd Bridges died, just because I thought it would be funny to remember something like that.
McGwire's 70th? I was watching the game live on ESPN and saw the moment happen live. Still one of the greatest sports moments of my life (even though he was a Cardinal!) Watching him round the bases and seek out Maris' family was tear jerking.
Wasn't it his 62nd that he did all that stuff? The thing I remember about McGwire's 62nd home run is that they cut away from the Astro's game right before Bagwell hit his very first career grand slam.
Bagwell was good with the bases loaded, just not clutch enough to hit a grand slam. I think he had the all time record for most career homers without a grand slam up until that point.
Personally I was impacted more when Layne Staley was found dead (former lead singer of Alice in Chains) than when I heard Kurt Cobain died.
sure is. it was about 9:30 a.m. and i was between organic chemistry and transport phenomena at UT. my friend came in and told us a plane (not planes for some reason) had hit the WTC and that one building had already fallen and that another plane hit the pentagon. at first i just thought it was a tragedy and really weird (and not a terror attack), and one of the buildings falling seemed kinda crazy but not a huge deal. nonetheless, i so wanted to start watching the news but had to sit through the 90 minute class (very hard class you had to get the notes for) and it started to hit me more and more as i sat there. as my friend and i walked home we just kept saying there's no way that one of the WTC buildings actually fell. that just can't happen and can't be true. but when i walked in to my dorm, everyone was dead silent watching the tv above the elevators and then i knew it was true. i pretty much just watched tv the rest of the day and the next few days. challenger: i was only 4 and don't remember. columbia: i woke up about 3 in the afternoon that day and turned on the tv and it was the first thing i saw. diana: didn't like her but i do remember watching tv about 3 in the morning and coming across the camera focusing on the crash scene on cnn. OJ: in my living room screaming at nbc and hoping we would at least get a split screen. mcgwire: living room with my family (it must be a big sports event if the rest of my family is actively watching). cobain: wasn't a fan and didn't listen to much music at that time as it was so i really don't remember.
I'm in total agreement with what A-Train said to start the thread off. Curt Cobain and Nirvana were awesome. I was looking over the 9/11 thread a little...what the hell ever happened to heypartner?
Cobain - Don't really remember. I was a fan, but it didn't effect me really. 9/11 - In the parking lot of Mr. Cool radiator shop. I was listening to the radio, waiting for the shop to open and the music station switched to a live feed from a reporter on the site. The switch occured just before the second plane crash, at which point the reporter started screaming uncontrollably about the intense heat from the explosion. Out of all the TV footage I have seen since then, nothing illustrated the emotion of the event more than that one radio reporter who completely lost control on the air. After that I left my car and rode the bus to work for 45 excruciating minutes where passengers would get on at each stop and tell little pieces of news along the way. Challenger - In 7th grade class. The teacher came in right after lunch and made the announcement. OJ/White Bronco - In my neighbor's apartment because I didn't have cable. My neighbor was this multitasking genius. He would always read books while watching TV, and we were watching two games at the same time, switching back and forth between NBA and NHL playoffs.
While most people in the world don't remember this one, it certainly strikes a chord on this board. I couldn't help but sit there and stare at the TV in disbelief. "How long are we doing to watch this white SUV drive slowly down the freeway?" I don't remember what I was doing when I heard about Cobain. I believe I was at work. I can't believe I don't remember where I was when I heard SRV died. I just remember that I was shocked. My aunt, uncle, and cousins were in town for the death of Elvis. It's the only time I remember them staying overnight at our house. We heard about it the next morning. I was seven at the time. My wife's brother and sister were visiting us in Lubbock when Diana died. We'd just come in from playing volleyball on the Texas Tech campus. I remember going to the library at lunch to watch the Challenger footage. I was in 9th grade and my girlfriend's name was Tyra. No, not that one. I happened to take my wife to work on 9/11. We were arguing about something stupid. After I dropped her off, I started heading toward the Barnes and Noble in Midland, Texas. I was on the highway between Odessa and Midland when I turned on the radio and heard what happened (at least part of it).
