NOW Ray Allen Allen Iverson Antoine Walker Peja Reggie Miller Glen Rice Allan Houston Jerry Stackhouse Micheal Finley Marbury THEN Jerry West Hal Greer Rick Barry Pete Maravich Bob McAdoo Calvin Murphy Larry Bird George Gervin David Thompson Alex English ------------------ "For there is nothing either good or bad, thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Hamlet
NOW Wally Szczerbiak Peja Stojokovich Allan Houston Chris Mullin Dell Curry Hersey Hawkins Mitch Richmond Dirk Nowitzki Ray Allen Reggie Miller I think that's a pretty good list. A few of those guys are well past their primes, but I still wouldn't leave them open for a jumper. ------------------
You want pure shooters? You want guys who will nail jumper after jumper right into their foes cold, black hearts? Reggie Miller Allan Houston Ray Allen Glenn Robinson Kobe Bryant Peja Stojakovic Dirk Nowitzki Michael Finley Gary Payton Stephon Marbury Terrell Brandon(great mid-range shot) Michael Jordan John Stockton Vince Carter Steve Francis Mark Price Chris Mullin Tim Hardaway Mitch Richmond Paul Pierce At their primes, you never left these guys open because they would bury you with their jumper. If I wanted to continue this list, I can also mention the plethora of big men with good jumpers that populate the game today(ex : Malone, Barkely, Webber, Garnett - even Mo Taylor has a purty jumper) ------------------ Don't ask, I lost a bet.
Bob, how can you consider Antoine Walker, Stackhouse, and Marbury great shooters. Marbury is a GOOD midrange shooter, but far from great, and the other two have aweful shooting percentages. ------------------
That is the point exactly. The great shooters today are spot-up shooters. There are very few shooters who demand the ball to get their shot off. I think the new rule changes will actually bring some of these skills back to the league. This debate began by commenting on the influx of high schoolers into the league who are basically raw physical talent -- no skills. Or should I say no shooting skills. You guys had to bring up Dale Ellis. Just when I was able to bury his Rocket daggers deep into my psyche to never be brought to the surface again. Now I'm depressed. (By the way if this is not the right forum - where does it belong? I have seen topics get flamed in the main forum because it is not purely "Rocket related".) ------------------ I let the dogs out.
Oh come on man....Kerr is the ALL TIME LEADER in 3 pt. shooting. Who cares if he's completely open, no one in the same zip code, etc. Chuck Person was one of the best all time shooters I have ever seen. ------------------ RIP HOOP-T
Please...Kobe has one of the streakiest shots in the game. Him, Iverson, and Quitten are some of the streakiest players I've ever seen. When those players are on, they are unbelievable, but they are really inconsistent. ------------------ "I look kind of dumpy. Look at my butt. And what kind of shoes do they have me wearing? At least they got the chinstrap beard right." -Kevin Garnett on the KG bobblehead dolls during KG bobblehead doll night at the Target Center
A couple of you are responding to Bob's list with the classic myth, which is that you can determine how good a shooter is by his percentage. Not everything can be done by numbers and statistics. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with Bob's list, but saying Iverson is a poor shooter in my opinion isn't true. He has a very nice jumper, but his percentages are low because he has to take so many shots for that team to have a shot. It is easier for guys like Kobe to have good shooting numbers, because he has Shaq to keep away most double-teams, and he has the luxury of passing off if he can't get a clean look. On the Sixers, Iverson can't do that. He has to shoot the ball for them to have a chance, and when you force shots you will miss some, no matter how good of a shooter you are. As far as current guys, here are my top ten: Ray Allen Dirk Nowitzki Glenn Robinson Allan Houston Reggie Miller Terrell Brandon Vince Carter Peja Stojakovic Steve Francis Derek Fisher Fisher's inclusion is mostly based on this year of course, as his performance at the end of the regular season and the playoffs was unbelievable. He hasn't done it consistently I realize, but his stroke in the playoffs at least deserves mention. Also, I tried to leave off the one-dimensional shooters such as Dell Curry, Matt Bullard, Steve Kerr, etc... they definitely can shoot, but it is a more entertaining discussion to talk about the impact players. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Again, the point is that the flight of HSers and early entry college players to the NBA is dragging down the scoring (shooting) talent. ------------------ I let the dogs out. [This message has been edited by Jumanji (edited July 09, 2001).]
I disagree. I believe the increased emphasis on defense is what drags down scoring and shooting. Having watched hours upon hours of old footage of NBA games I saw a whole bunch of shots that guys would never get away with taking today because defense is emphasized so much today. That and slow-down offenses are what is draggin scoring down. ------------------ Don't ask, I lost a bet.
Yeah, Glenn Robinson is a pretty good bet even when he's covered by a taller player. Also, I've got to agree with Carter. His shot is sweet and getting sweeter. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I too have seen a lot of the old time players play. And, yes, the level of defense has increased. That has some impact on the overall scoring and flow of the game. But, the college game, by virtue of the zone-d, forces/encourages the development of the outside shot. Subsequently, the less a player/draftee is exposed to that type of game, then the less he will have the part of his game developed before coming to the show. What is ironic is that the Rocks have some of the better shooters in the league by position and I am very interested to see how the new rules benefit them. Bullard and the Wizard are two very good (and tall) shooters and should be able to get their shot off over the defenses. MoT is also a good shooter for PF. Even Dream, for a center, has a good outside shot. But I digress (and as reminded by Hardwood, am in the wrong forum for this). ------------------ I let the dogs out.
