    $50 tickets
    $10 beer
    $8 Hot dogs

He might even increase them this year.
Not to mention all the $$$ he gets from TV and Revenue sharing deals

Players salaries increase while his budget decreases... put some more money into the team

No kidding. Amazing how the ignorance persists in the face of a mountain of facts.

Serious question: Who was the last huge $$$ international pro free agent to pan out long-term? Ichiro?

    Wagner is 99% retired.

The Astros play into this very well....

We don't want to resign Valverde because he's going to be wanting probably 8 mil per or more.

Wager wouldn't mind pitching here and he won't be asking much for a one or two year contract, and he proved last year that he can still pitch.Wagner could be a cheap closer who would bring in ticket sales.

    The Astros are WS contenders?

And where has he said he "wouldn't mind" pitching here again?

    But you know, you're right.

We shouldn't listen to Billy when he says he's pretty much definitely retired, and we shouldn't listen to him when he says he only wants to come back for a ring. I think the lesson is, and history backs me up here, that you just shouldn't listen to Billy.

    My mistake.

He's cheap when it comes to the farm system.

Maybe 'Stros can sign Lackey. He probably won't want to play for Scioscia after this debacle of an inning.

Would love it but after the game he just had your looking at probably 5-6 years at 80-90 million...to rich for Uncle D's wallet unless he trades Oz, Puma or Lee.

But not the payroll for the ML club. People can b**** and moan all day about not signing picks or the lack of presence internationally, the closing of Venezuela pipeline, but don't complain about Drayton not spending money on this team. He really just needs to spend wiser.

Drayton needs to save his money for 2011 when we can get big names such as Josh Beckett,Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, or Brandon Webb

From my understanding Bob Melvin did not get a second interview. If that is true, that is a shame. However, I do feel fairly confident that should Garner does get a second chance Melvin will be part of Garner's staff.

Agree... Bob Melvin seems to be the best candidate. Perhaps he gave the impression he really wasn't interested in the situation here. At this point I think none of the other candidates stand out... just plug someone in and prepare for a so so season... :(

Astros close to making decision on manager
    By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ

As owner Drayton McLane heads into the weekend, Phil Garner, Manny Acta and Brad Mills remain the lone finalists to replace Cecil Cooper, and the Astros' owner expects to have a decision by early next week.

“We’re just trying to think through this,” McLane said. “This is really important. Having the right person is so important to be the leader of this team. It’s going to take time. We’ll make a decision in the first part of next week.”

McLane said he, president of baseball operations Tal Smith and general manager Ed Wade have now begun the final check of references on Acta and Mills. No such check is needed for Garner, the former Astros manager who led the club to the World Series in 2005.

Asked if he was going to interview more candidates other than Acta and Mills for a second round of interview, McLane said he didn’t expect to have a second round with other candidates.

“No we’re not going to meet,” said McLane, who will spend the weekend with family in Birmingham, Ala. “I met with some candidates. Phil Garner is somebody I know intimately. I became very, very close to him. Ed and Tal and Pam (Gardner) and I, part of how we make decisions is to talk things through. Ed and Tal and I know lots and lots of people in baseball. We’re making lots of calls to find out more about these candidates.

“Each of these candidates that we’re narrowing it to, we’re making calls on. The three of us are doing that since yesterday and today and tomorrow and over the weekend. We’ll get a lot more input. I have had discussions with Ed and Tal and Pam said yesterday. Certainly, we’ll talk about it again today.”

Out of respect for the process, Acta and Mills have said they’ll withhold comment.

A completely sane conclusion. The next two years with the Astros will not be pleasant.

There are things that can be done to make this team fun to watch and competetive in their division. I'm not sure it will happen, but it's possible to achieve success.
