True, but they are also a low budget American League team while the Astros are an NL Central team that has no problem spending money.
From Brian Mctaggart twitter : "Acta interviewed for second time in Houston on WED, one day after interviewing in CLE"
Good move by the Astros since the Indians are also after him. Breath of fresh air from the previous Astros managers. I would would be happy with either him or Melvin.
Well we have the final four and there are shockers! Astros Interview Acta, Mills Again... http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/mlb/091021_astros_acta_interview HOUSTON - Major League Baseball sources told FOX 26 Sports the Houston Astros are apparently focusing on four candidates as there search for a new manager continues. The four candidates are former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta, Boston Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills, former Astros manager Phil Garner and Astros interim manager Dave Clark. Sources told FOX 26 Acta and Mills were in Houston Wednesday for their second interviews with Houston officials and that group now includes Astros owner Drayton McLane who had been out of the country. General Manager Ed Wade would not comment on Acta and Mills returning for second interviews. He had said after the first round of interviews he would not comment on the process until the club had decided on its next manager. Acta and Mills are the only known candidates to interview for a second time. The Astros began with a list of ten candidates. ----------------------------------------------- So its Acta, Mills, Clark and Garner I would say Acta and Garner would be the Favs but I am stunned Melvin and Bogar where sent packing so quickly.
Whoever it is, I give it until game 5 when we are questioning either his lineup cards or in-game decisions.
I don't know too much about baseball personnel. If Acta had a terrible record in Washington, why is he though of in high regard as a manager? Were the players that bad at Washington?
From what I understand the Nats were pretty bad and not even Torre could have helped those guys, plus he is pretty well regarded in most circles. Saying that I have a feeling this might be a circle of trust junk because Acta was with the organization for so long.
Of course the players were awful. Maybe we owe him. He got fired after the Astros beat the Nats this season.
Team record is one of the worst possible ways to judge a manager. They can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh...and they rarely turn chicken salad into chicken sh...
Out of those four, Garner would be the best choice in my opinion. Sure, Acta has a lot of minor league experience, but his major league experience is not very impressive. Yes, I realize the Nats were as terrible then as they are now, but still...
Now, if hiring Acta, a Dominican, would persuade Tejada to sign for 5 or 6 million and if the 'Stros plan on signing that young Cuban phenom, Aroldis Chapman, who throws 100 mph as a left-handed starting pitcher, then maybe so.
I just saw Garner at the Galleria. He had a bag packed -- a little Samsonite carry-on with wheels. I didn't ask him about how interviews were going, but I sure as hell hope he gets the job.
It's not going to matter who the manager is, if Drayton continues being cheap with the payroll. 1) Sign Lackey 2) Sign Aroldis Chapman 3) Sign Wagner 4) re-sign Tejada (to play 3B) 5) Find a SS
