All Phil Garner did for the Astros was get them to an NLCS and their 1st world series appearance. i wouldn't be upset if we brought him back.
Brad Mills BOSTON -- Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills said he's excited for the opportunity to interview for the Houston Astros' managerial opening, but doesn't yet know when that will be. It was announced on Monday afternoon in a press conference with Boston general manager Theo Epstein and manger Terry Francona that both Mills and first base coach Tim Bogar were granted permission to interview with the Astros. more in the link
Ex-skipper Garner among Astros manager candidates The Astros’ search for a new manager will include a familiar name. Former manager Phil Garner, who led the Astros to the World Series in 2005, is among a list of 10 candidates who will be interviewed for the vacant managerial position, the team announced Monday.. The group also includes interim manager Dave Clark, minor league field coordinator Al Pedrigue, former Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost, San Diego Padres hitting coach Randy Ready, former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta and current Boston Red Sox coaches Brad Mills and Tim Bogar. The Astros have also been granted permission to interview Philadelphia Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin. “We’re excited about the entire group of candidates,” general manager Ed Wade said. “All 10 candidates have a great deal of experience and are held in high regard throughout Major League Baseball. Clarkie and Al are great internal candidates and are very well-respected both inside and outside the Astros family.”
No Jim Fregosi so I am happy. Not a big fan of Phil Garner either. I also don't like internal candidates because they need a fresh perceptive. Wouldn't mind either Manny Acta or Pete Mackanin.
Scarp Iron should have never been fired, it was Timmy's crap that got us in trouble so if he comes back I'd be cool with it BUT saying that I would like some new blood like Bogar, Ready or The Phillies bench coach. Little dissapointed Wedge wasn't included on the list but overall ok with the list. By the way where is Dave Duncan name?
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/6663709.html "I’m honored, No. 1," Garner said. "Anytime somebody is going to interview you for a job I feel good about it. That’s the good thing." Garner said he hadn't considered contacting the Astros about the job until last week when he was asked what candidates should consider and know about managing this club. "As we talked and I thought, 'What should a guy expect?' I said, 'Heck, I know all these things,'" Garner said, referring to an interview he granted the Chronicle last week. "I decided to throw my name in the hat, and they decided to take it. "There’s no special favors. I’m going through the vetting process just like everybody else, and I’m OK with that. That’s a fine deal. I love the city. I like the city. It’s a fabulous city." A few days after that interview, Garner was speaking with Astros president of baseball operations Tal Smith when the subject was broached. "I called Tal Smith regarding another matter," Garner said. "We kind of broached the subject and said I’ll be interested. I gave it a thought and then we talked about it again." Garner, who knows the club veterans well, led the Astros to the 2005 World Series. He also led the team to the 2004 NLCS after taking over at the All-Star Break with the club stuck at .500. “Phil is somebody I’ve known since we both spent some time together in 1981 in Pittsburgh,” Wade said. “I thought he did a tremendous job in Detroit and Milwaukee. And the job he did here in Houston speaks for itself.”
They had Pete freakin Munro starting NLCS games for them. Anyways, I'm more intrigued in Ned Yost... a guy who I thought was wronged when he was fired in Milwaukee.
I don't understand the exclusion of Dave Duncan from this list....unless they asked and he said he wasn't interested.
I think his comments have kind of hinted that he isn't interested. Anyway, Richard has a blog up saying the Astros are making a joke of this process by bringing in 10 guys for interviews. He states that interviews are worthless, they tell you nothing about the guy other than how he speaks, you should already know all about him AND most importantly, the interviews (that he doesn't think you need anyway) should be conducted only by Tal Smith and Ed Wade.
I'm not saying I dont approve or do approve of if they just so happen to hire Garner but they would look really foolish doing so. Call Cecil back too then Honestly though, I'd say clean house besides Cruz[thats if he wants to stay and the new manager wants him] and get new management in here. As for Phil, I dont think he would have the same success as he did in the past.
I am all for bringing back Phil Garner. My friend who is a New York Yankee and Met fan actually mentioned that they should back when they fired Cecil, I never thought they would but I guess you never know. Garner, Yost, and Melvin intrigue me the most. If one of those three in that order get hired ill be a happy camper.
