Not saying its a bad choice its just not the "sexy pick". I hope he's a success though. I thought it would have been cool to see if Biggio or Bagwell had any interest.
I see what your saying but not much out there besides LaRussa but he was going back to the Cards and thus the other "HOT" name was also out of the running in Duncan. Mills was a longshot and because of that it gives me hope as it seems the Stros are starting to look outside the box and not just going for the cookie cutter manager.
I would have loved them bring in Craig Biggio for at least an interview if he had interest. I think he would be a great coach at any level. I know he's been coaching his son's high school team.
Agreed...2nd choice, as MA went to cleveland, which IMHO is a good thing... But unless this guy can pitch, we're going nowhere...
Now that this is out of the way, how about the bigger issues like the back end of the starting rotation, third base, shortstop, second base, catcher and closer?
Who cares if it's a boring pick so long as the guy gets the job done. And I'd be a little hesitant in giving Bidge or Bagwell a chance at the helm because I don't want their legacies to be tarnished if they fail to field a winner. I'd much rather give Brad Ausmus a chance for that reason...but we're several years away from heading down that road, if it ever happens.
I hope they hire someone like Bob Melvin, Ned Yost, Eric Wedge or Clint Hurdle as his bench coach. It would be nice for Mills to have someone who has managed before in the big leagues. For the pitching coach, Leo Mazzone would be my first choice. I don't know if he is retired or what but he would be nice. Mark Wiley is also out there and has a ton of experience.
the reds went for a "big name" manager, and we're stuck with crappy dusty baker. paying him a silly ass amount of money too.
