Sorry, it's 11 years in the minors & 11 years in the bigs. Generic quote on what he brings to the table: "I might be a little prejudiced, but I think Terry [Francona] is one of the best managers in the game today. One of the reasons is because his work ethic is second to none. He plans and prepares each day with the players. That's one of the things I'm going to take with me -- his knowledge of the game, the way he manages a game, the way he runs a game, the way he works with the press, the way he works in the community and the way he works with the organizations. "Those types of things really make him stand out from other guys that I know or I have seen. Those are all traits that I've taken from him and learned from him."
I don't like Keith Law but here is what he wrote on ESPN Insider about Uncle D: Keith Law Owner the issue in Houston "This is just another piece of evidence on why Drayton McLane is the worst owner in baseball, and the one for whom people in the game would least like to work. His front office chose an excellent managerial candidate, arguably the best of the ones they interviewed, and McLane let him get away because he refused to guarantee the third year of a deal. That sort of meddling and the implied lack of autonomy for the GM makes Houston a lousy place for executives to work - and will continue to hamstring the team going forward as they attempt to rebuild. (It's also an example of why the media and the industry still respect Mark Shapiro even after two disappointing seasons. They make solid, sensible moves, built around good people whose value is evident even to outsiders.)"
Here a couple of tweets by Peter Gammons about Brad Mills "Hopefully folks in Houston realize what an extraordinary man Brad Mills happens to be." "If Drayton McLane wants sagacity, respect, trust, honesty and toughness, just hire Brad Mills."
I love it. I hope he's right, but Peter Gammons worships all things Red Sox, so it's POSSIBLE Mills is not the second coming of Connie Mack.
I don't know but from all the reports from Mark Berman and Brian McTaggert, that is the way it went down. Drayton didn't give him a 3rd year so he went to the Indians. Like I said, I think Keith Law is a douchebag. He used to work for the Bluejays and he recently wrote that former GM JP Ricciardi turned down a David Wright for Jose Cruz Jr. trade. Ricciardi fired him so he is spilling his beans.
Thats true but if Mills is like anything Terry Francona I am happy. I just somebody who wouldn't mind sitting Kaz Matusi if he stinks. Somebody who chew out Carlos Lee if he doesn't hustle. Somebody who doesn't mind sitting Hunter Pence if he has one of those months again like he had this past July.
Got a tweet from Mctaggert updating his blog that bascially said Mills had been contacted again by the Stros but Garner had not, so its looking more and more like Mills is the man. Presser tomorrow is my prediction. Sorry but the tweet is on my phone so I can't post the link, my job cut twitter out of my expectable websites.
Astros to Meet with Mills, Clark Again HOUSTON - The Houston Astros search for a new manager continues with Boston Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills and Astros interim manager Dave Clark coming to Houston to be interviewed again. Mills, who has already met with Astros officials twice, is flying to Houston from California and will interview with the team Tuesday. Clark, who has had one interview with the club, is flying to Houston from Tennessee and will also interview Tuesday. The Astros initially offered their job to Manny Acta who turned Houston down to take the manager's job with the Cleveland Indians. The length of the Astros offer, a two-year deal plus a club option for a third year, was the sticking point for Acta. He received a three-year contract from the Indians plus a club option for a fourth year. Astros general manager Ed Wade told FOX 26 Sports Sunday there is a reason the club initially began with ten candidates. Wade said he is confident the Astros will make a "solid selection" from that group. Wade expects the team's new manager to be the right guy "for now and the long-term." Former Astros manager Phil Garner is also still in the mix. He has interviewed once with club officials and it is not clear if he will meet with them again. His travel plans are not nearly as complicated because he lives in the Woodlands.
^^ Off subject kind of, but doesn't Garner live in Kingwood? As a former resident of The Woodlands, I resent any mixing up of the 2 places.
While I have no reason to doubt that Brad Mills would do a good job and give this team the managerial leadership it needs, I was hoping that they'd give the job back to Garner. I'd like to believe that they aren't giving the job back to him because they want complete turnover and a completely new outlook, but I can't help but think part of it is that McLane doesn't want to admit that maybe firing him in the first place was a mistake.
Maybe they want to introduce Clark to Mills since Clark will likely be on his staff if Mills is hired.
I think I'd like to see Mills after what I've seen about him. I like Garner but I'd just rather see some fresh blood, and no thank you to Clark. To me it doesn't matter much anyway until Drayton stops driving the teams' growth into the ground by not allowing any sort of trades in which we don't benefit immediately from ticket sales. I know this is an exaggeration but to an extent that is what he is doing.
Still disappointed? http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/...t_id=7553594&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou
I read that earlier, thats fine I got over it pretty quickly but I am still puzzled why the new manager didn't have a say and the position given to Cruzzzzzzz is just to shut up the people who complained thats all.
While it may look that way, the position was part of the deal from the get-go, being mentioned pretty much verbatim the same day he was "let go".
Yea but thats my point they knew people where going to go nuts and had plan B ready to go. Really meaningless in the grand scope of things but still hurts to see one of my heros being sent to get put down.
Uh, in about every conceivable way, this move is a promotion. He'll have much more input with players, and about players, than he did with the Astros, where he pretty much didn't do much but hit fungoes, touch himself in various seemingly random places, run a stopwatch, & hold batting gloves. Good to see that the Jesus Ortiz and others got everyone riled up over nothing, though.
