Have you ever watched any NBA game?

Kobe just got an off-night last Tuesday against the Spurs.

Much to the contrary, guys like lebron, kg, td, shaq, kobe and other have off-night occassionly.

yeah..but these guys put up averages that far exceed what we see from yao.

you simply can't put him in that caliber of player at this point. sorry. i wish you could! i'd love it!

I have to side with Yao on this for at least the Suns game ( I haven't really had time to watch the last few games ). I believe Yao was like 6 for 11 last nite, and like everyone, I noticed the majority of his points were off of offensive rebound putbacks. Take away those 3 attempts (which are self-earned) off of offensive rebounds and then you have 8 attempts in about 28 minutes of play; since the Rockets had been trailing most of the night, this is inexcusable especially since Yao had been getting the calls underneath by the officials and drawing fouls. And I don't buy the excuse that our guards / forwards can't get the ball in to Yao, cause we've all seen it when Yao gets more that 8 attempts a nite.

To me last nite's loss was attributed to the fact that the Rockets tried to run to much with the Suns. Several times, the Rockets could've cut the deficit by 1 or 2, but instead the team opted to launch a trey, even when there's significant time left on the shot clock. We can't run with the Suns, no one can. In the next meeting, I expect JVG to have a different game plan of attack.

for me at least, my opinion of how yao did last night has nothing to do with his efficiency. it has to do with HOW he does the things he does, not WHAT he does. does he take shots while being forced out beyond his comfort zone by weaker players. does he take it to the heart of the defense. does he act like he wants to dominate the league. is he aggressive.

for me, if yao attacked the hell out of the basket every night, and missed every shot, i would be happy. of course, he couldnt make a habit of missing shots reguardless, but for me, and for the rockets, what makes a difference is HOW he does it. the way he does it will effect the way defenses defend him and how referrees show him superstar respect.

I have to agree with Daddy. It's not about Yao having an off nite. To me, Yao didn't get enough opportunites to get an off nite. I think that's what we're all debating about here: whether or not Yao's lack of dominance or effectiveness is his fault or JVG's systems fault.

I am so tired of both YAO haters and YAO lovers.

I suggest we trade YAO ASAP.

BTW, you've got most of your points right.

In all, without the determination and agressiveness, YAO, you are going nowhere. If the guards cannot pass the ball to you, you need to work ****ing hard to either grab the rebounds or force the issue. And that is called determination and agressiveness!

With Yao playing like this, Houston is doomed, guys.

    Peace.

I'm with you on this one. Culture matters and the environment like where you were born and raised, who you hang out with matter as well. If Yao was born and raised in NYC, and played basketball in the States, believe me, Yao would have been the best thing since the sliced bread.

Good point. Lately, I've been wondering if Yao himself believes he's at the superstar-level in the NBA. My feeling is that he doesn't. When he plays for the Chinese national team, he knows without a doubt that he is a badass and that he needs to play accordingly. In the NBA, though, I'm not sure.

In fact, I'd have to say his lack of a killer instinct in the NBA comes down to one of two factors, neither of which is based on his culture:

    * He doesn't think he is truly an elite player at this level (Yao has talked time and time again about the NBA being the ultimate test of a player's skill).

    - OR -

    * He simply doesn't get it that the entire team (hell, the entire CITY) is counting on him to shoulder more of a load than anyone else except maybe T-Mac. Although by now, he should've had this drummed into him by the entire Rockets organization.

My money's on the first one. Yao knows he belongs in the NBA, and he knows he's popular, and he knows he's well above average. I just don't think he thinks he should be among the elite at this point.

I think it's pretty hard to get the ball to low post players now.
Shaq doesn't get the ball nearly enough in Miami even he's much
better at beating double-team and fronting. Shaq also has good
hands. I doubt Hakeem would get enough touches in the Zone
era if you planted him in the low post all night.

I think JVG should mix the high and low post game to get Yao
the ball. He needs to watch more tapes of Duncan, Amare,
J'Oneal to get a better idea how to get Yao touches.

I agree. It is better to trade Yao now. LA defintely will take him at any price. Kobe know how difficult to play without a good big man. Yao doen't have to play like Shaq. Kobe know how to play with good center even though he never likes Shaq from the beginning.

I agree with you snow on that Yao needs more touches, but I agree with you that it's harder this year to get the ball into Yao, but I still think it's possible. Several times last nite, they could've looked inside to Yao...I think Legler of ESPN pointed it out in a post game analysis.

Maybe we should ask ourselves why Yao "took charge" on the Chinese Olympic team. He was demanding in those games. And he chastised the players in the Chinese press when they werent working hard. I believe that he KNOWS he is the best player on that team, and thus he is the leader. He KNOWS that HE has to get it done, and if he doesn't, no one else will. It was really interesting seeing him be the focal point of that team.

To contrast that, with the Rockets he probably feels that he isnt the most talented player on the team and that he doesnt have the right to stand up and say things or to take charge on the court. I am not advocating trading McGrady because of this, but I think it is interesting to see the different environments and how he acts.

We can only hope that sometime he will have an epiphony and realize what he means to the team. He will realize that the way he takes charge for the Chinese team is the way he should take charge here. Perhaps he STILL feels like a foreigner on the Rockets and because of this he is hesitant to stand up and say things.

we were 8-28 on 3 ptrs and missed a ton of wide opened 20 footers...

with that type of outside shooting, dumping it into Yao and having him operate doesnt work

in that aspect, i blame the coach for not being more creative with plays. Yao did do a decent job of trying to create his own opportunities with offensive rebounds and putbacks

Actually, Bush went to war because he believes that God told him that it was his destiny to bring Democracy to the Middle East but I digress...

Perhaps more emphasis should be placed on building a team that is more in harmony with Yao's personality and talents rather than trying to remake him into a Chinese version of Ewing or Shaq or Hakeem and to b**** at him every night for not being "selfish" enough.

Let me make sure I have this straight. Shaq is now a guy with handles who brings the ball up the court.

I've heard some doozies in the past, but these takes the cake.

It's not JVG's fault that Yao goes through stretches of crap, but Yao is capable of doing a lot more than just being a post player.
He is able to make good passes to cutters, find the open man, and WAS able to hit the 10-ft jumper.

JVG has Yao in the post everytime (where he should be), but Yao isn't even part of the offensive set half the time. If Yao doesn't have good position then his part is basically over. Like most people say, Yao should atleast touch the ball everytime down the court, no matter how deep in position he is. Everytime Yao touches the ball, the defense has to react, everytime.

i would hate to see a professional sports team built in harmony with yaos personality. instead of fireworks after a game, they would drop rose petals and offer gift baskets and monkey pelts to the defeated.

on the serious side, to change the way we are training yao to play would be to change what is special about him. if we were to let him face the basket and come off screens to shoot 18 footers, he might get more shots, but his ability to impact the game would be practically nothing. the reason he has the ability now to impact the game is because he is bigger and stronger than everyone else, and when he plays big, he can get unguardable point blank shots all night.
